Rayvon Stewart grew up in a poor farming community in Manchester Parish, Jamaica. Raised by his grandmother, he and his cousin were the first in their family to go to university. There, he discovered a passion for inventing. He developed a piece of 3D software that lets people try on clothes online as if they were really doing it.
However, the idea for his most important invention came when he was doing voluntary work in the hospital. “I saw how much the patients were suffering, how much help they needed, and how hard the nurses were working,” Stewart told The Guardian. He realized that touching something after someone else is risky because that’s how many germs (病菌) spread.
Driven by this idea, Stewart developed a self-sanitizing (自动消毒的) door handle that uses UV light (紫外线). It kills 99.9 percent of germs but is still safe for people and animals. The invention could be very useful for stopping the spread of disease in places like hospitals.
As the tech industry in the Caribbean grows, Stewart has become a local hero. “We’re very proud of him,” said a professor from the University of the West Indies. His invention has also inspired other young people. As the co-founder of a tech platform noted, more and more young people now want to take on big challenges. They see what’s happening around the world and want to be part of it. They are eager to solve problems that affect the whole world.
Stewart’s journey from a farm to a businessman shows that a person’s background doesn’t matter. Everyone can make the world a better place.
24.What inspired Stewart to invent the self-sanitizing door handle
A.His study at the university. B.His experience in the hospital.
C.His interest in new 3D software. D.His grandmother’s encouragement.
25.What is the main advantage of Stewart’s door handle
A.It works without electricity. B.It uses 3D fitting technology.
C.It kills germs effectively and safely. D.It reduces nurses’ work significantly.
26.What impact has Stewart’s achievement had
A.It made the Caribbean a global technology leader.
B.It broadened young people’s views in his hometown.
C.It stopped germs from spreading in hospitals worldwide.
D.It encouraged the Caribbean youth to solve global problems.
27.Which is the best title for the text
A.How to Stop Germs from Spreading in Hospitals
B.From Poverty to Pioneer: An Inventor’s Journey
C.The History of Self-Sanitizing Door Handles
D.Caribbean’s Big Role in Helping Stewart
Planting trees is good for the environment. It’s a popular way to remove carbon (碳) from the air. But a new study shows that this method alone cannot offset all the planet-warming pollution, known as the emission (排放) of greenhouse gas, created by the world’s biggest fossil fuel (化石燃料) companies.
To do that, we would need to plant so many trees that they would cover all of North and Central America. The researchers found that trees cannot absorb carbon as fast as these 200 large oil, gas, and coal companies produce it. There simply isn’t enough land on Earth for all the trees we would need.
Also, if these companies had to pay for planting all those trees, it would cost $ 10.8 trillion. That’s more money than all these big companies are actually worth combined. “People might think planting trees is a magic solution, but it’s not,” said Nina Friggens, one of the researchers.
Many companies, including fossil fuel businesses, pay for tree-planting programs to cancel out their pollution. Trees are a cheap way to do this because they naturally absorb carbon.
For the study, the researchers looked at the 200 companies that own the most fossil fuels underground (like oil and coal they plan to use in the future). They calculated how much CO2 would be released if all these fuels were burned.
Another scientist, Jonathan Foley, explained the results simply. He said, “Planting trees is like using a sponge (海绵) to clean up a big water spill. But if we keep spilling more and more water, the sponge won’t be able to keep up. First, we need to turn off the tap.”
28.What does the underlined word “offset” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Pick. B.Balance. C.Set. D.Switch.
29.Why does the author mention North and Central America
A.To suggest more trees should be planted in this region.
B.To compare forest coverage in different continents.
C.To explain where the fossil fuel companies are located.
D.To show planting trees to cancel out carbon emissions is impossible.
30.What is the main reason why trees are used in cancelling out carbon
A.They are a low-cost natural solution. B.They are required by government policies.
C.They are the only known method available. D.They can completely solve pollution problems.
31.What do Foley’s words mean
A.The tap should be fixed first. B.Water spills are difficult to clean down
C.The source of pollution should be cut off. D.Better sponges are needed to absorb water spills.
Construction robots are not new. They have been doing difficult jobs on building sites for some time. Now, there is a new robot named Charlotte. It is said that this robot can build a 2,150-square-foot house all by itself in just one day. It works as fast as about 100 human workers.
Charlotte was created by two Australian companies. One company developed a special, environmentally friendly building material. This material is made from sand, waste glass, and broken bricks found locally. The other company built the robot.
Traditional building needs a lot of steps, like fixing steel bars (钢筋) and setting up wooden frames (框架). But Charlotte is different. It uses a special system to 3D print the building material, layer (层) by layer. It can even move and lift itself up using its “spider legs”. All this is done by one machine in a single, continuous process.
The robot is still being developed. It will probably take a few years before it builds its first real house. A smaller early model was shown at a recent exhibition. The companies have big dreams for Charlotte. They hope it will not only build houses on Earth in the future but also help build bases for research on the Moon. They say its design, which copies ideas from nature, and its ability to work alone make it perfect for the Moon.
While Charlotte seems best for simple building styles right now, its main goal is to help with two big problems: not enough workers and slow building progress. These problems make it hard to solve the housing shortage in many countries. The houses it builds can keep out floods and resist fire. The building process is much faster and cheaper than traditional methods. If the materials are taken from nearby places, it can also be better for the environment by reducing carbon emissions.
Of course, this robot builder won’t be the right solution for every place, climate, or what every person likes, But for the millions of people who need a home, it sounds like a very hopeful way to help solve part of the problem.
32.Which aspect of Charlotte is mentioned in paragraph 1
A.Its amazing work efficiency. B.Its widespread application.
C.Its environmental quality. D.Its convenient operation.
33.How is Charlotte’s building process different from traditional methods
A.It needs more time. B.It requires more workers.
C.It focuses on wooden structures. D.It uses a single continuous process.
34.What future application do the companies expect of Charlotte
A.Repairing historical buildings. B.Developing new building materials.
C.Building research bases on the Moon. D.Creating artistic statues for famous people.
35.What is the author’s attitude to the robot builder
A.Critical. B.Positive. C.Doubtful D.Uncaring.
Imagine walking into your local library and borrowing a new clothing item instead of a book. 36 . Clothing libraries, where visitors can check out clothes, are appearing online and even inside traditional book libraries.
Fast fashion has enabled people to find their style and express themselves quickly and cheaply. 37 . The fashion industry produces about 175 million tons of textiles (纺织品) annually, yet only 6. 6 million tons are actually used. The remaining 169 million tons are discarded in landfills. Reusing clothes can significantly lower one’s carbon footprints. This has increased the popularity of clothing libraries, which focus on recycling and reusing. Initially offering expensive or special occasion wear, many now also include everyday clothing.
Although most clothing libraries operate online, Lizzie chose to place them in local libraries instead. She founded an organization in 2023 to promote clothing exchanges at Oswestry Library. 38 . This helps her see an opportunity to advance secondhand fashion and attract visitors. Lizzie believed libraries provided the perfect comfortable setting for trying new styles.
39 . Many clothing exchanges use a point system requiring donations, but at Oswestry Library, only a library card was needed. With the card, users could check out books or clothing for three weeks and renew them. Each piece of clothing has a barcode(条形码) with the donor’s name, which makes clothes feel special.
The Oswestry project perfectly combines fashion with literature, proving that a library visit can refresh one’s mind, wallet, and wardrobe. This initiative (新方案) benefits the local library, community, and organizers. For Lizzie, the greatest joy lies in seeing people discover and value recycled clothing. 40 .
A.However, it does come at a cost
B.It also helps reduce waste in the book industry
C.It quickly grew into a clothing lending program
D.This new idea is already a reality in some places
E.A famous designer decided to start her own business
F.The Oswestry clothing library works just like its book service
G.This creates a wonderful feeling of shared community and responsibility

The shopping was over. My two-year-old daughter sat comfortably in one of my shopping carts, surrounded by a lot of bought items. Shopping once a month was a well-planned process. My shopping list was organized well so that I wouldn’t miss even one item.
At the checkout, a gentleman in a suit stood behind me, holding fewer items. He looked up at his watch, then at me and smiled. While my daughter behaved well, I knew I’d taken her out for too long, and she might not stand it soon. Even so, the man obviously had somewhere important to go, and if he stayed behind me, he’d have to wait a long time.
“Why don’t you check out first ” I said, moving the cart backwards. “You only bought a few items.”
“Thank you,” he replied appreciatively, stepping ahead of me.
My daughter gave him a warm smile and greeted him in her sweetest voice.
“Hello,” he replied, surprised by my daughter’s kindness, and a happy look appeared on his face.
As the belt moved forward, I started unloading my cart. I was only halfway finished unloading the first cart when I suddenly thought of something. I had taken out my bank card the night before and I couldn’t remember if I had put it back in my wallet.
I hurriedly took out my wallet and opened it. My heart dropped. The bank card wasn’t there
The gentleman in front of me had paid and was picking up his groceries(食品杂货).
“I’ve forgotten my bank card. Do you accept a credit card ” I asked the cashier hopefully. “I’m sorry, ma’am. We only accept debit cards(借记卡) or cash,” she answered.
“It will take me an hour to run home and an hour back. Can you just put my stuff on the side please ” I was discouraged. All my careful planning seemed useless now. The one-hour shopping had made me very tired, and I didn’t know if my daughter could stand staying in the car for another two hours.

An Initiative to Save Electricity
Dear fellow students,
Have you ever noticed empty classrooms with lights still brightly on, or charging cables left plugged in long after devices are fully charged These are common scenes on our campus, reflecting a waste of precious electricity.
Saving electricity is not just about cutting costs. It is a crucial step toward protecting our environment. By reducing energy consumption, we help decrease carbon emissions and contribute to a greener planet. Moreover, it cultivates a sense of responsibility and mindfulness in our daily lives.
Let’s take action now! Make it a habit to turn off lights and unplug devices when they’re not in use. Remember, every small effort counts. Together, we can build a more sustainable and green campus.

67. Just then, the gentleman in front of me turned back. He said to the cashier, “I’ll pay for her order.” Before I could refuse, he had already handed his debit card to the cashier. I was speechless, my face flushed with both embarrassment and gratitude. He smiled gently and said, “Your little girl looks tired — she shouldn’t have to sit in the car for another two hours.” My throat felt tight, and I kept saying “thank you” until he told me it was no big deal. My daughter, sensing the kindness, clapped her hands happily and gave him another big smile.
The gentleman walked me to my car, helping me with my groceries. He carefully placed the heavier bags inside. I thanked him again sincerely. Before leaving, he handed me his business card. I promised to pay him back as soon as possible. As I drove home, I thought about how a small, kind act from a stranger had turned my stressful day around. It made me realize that kindness is about being willing to help someone in need. From that day on, I decided to pass on this kindness too, making someone else’s day brighter, just like the gentleman did for mine.
