Singapore is a city-state in Southeast Asia. Thanks to a program, we got a chance to explore the Garden City for one day.
First, we headed to the Gardens by the Bay. We were attracted by the Supertrees at once. They are high-rise gardens, which produce electricity using energy from the sun, collect rainwater, and more. From there, we headed to the Cloud Forest, which I found most amazing in this Garden City. In hot and wet Singapore, this is a great place to cool off. Inside, a large waterfall comes down the side of the “cloud mountain.” This intricate structure (错综复杂的建筑) is divided into three levels and contains plants from different places. Visitors are free to walk around and learn more about all of the plants. Our journey then led us to a theater inside the Cloud Forest where we watched a ten-minute film. I was totally taken aback by what I saw. I had never realized that our planet would change so greatly when the temperature increased by just five degrees.
Then we headed back outside and continued on our walk. Between two of the larger Supertrees, you’ll find the Skyway. Visitors can head to the top to enjoy a fantastic bird’s eye view of the city.
Next, we made our way to the Singapore River, where we saw a boat going by. In search of food, we headed into the Marina Bay Sands. It has what has to be the best food court I’ve ever eaten in, with delicious food from all over the world. We ordered different kinds of dishes, which were all tasty.
Needing to walk off that huge lunch, we walked from one side of the river to the other. On the other side, we found Merlion, the symbol ( 象征) of Singapore. Water flows out of the mouth of this amazing creation all day long. While walking along the riverside and enjoying the beautiful view, I couldn’t help but wish we had more time to explore this Garden City.
8. Which of the following did the author most enjoy
A. The Skyway. B. The Cloud Forest.
C. The Supertrees. D. The Marina Bay Sands.
9. How did the author feel when he watched the film
A. Surprised. B. Relaxed. C. Satisfied. D. Pleased.
10. What did the author’s group do after lunch
A. They climbed a cloud mountain.
B. They took a boat trip on the river.
C. They had a rest in the Marina Bay Sands.
D. They went for a walk near the river.
11. Where does this text probably come from
A. A science report. B. A tourist guidebook.
C. A travel magazine. D. A geography textbook.
D
When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year, I don’t usually know how to reply. Of course I, as most people do, want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I’m hoping for something different.
Through the course of my school life, I’ve gradually developed a new understanding of the word “prioritization (优先次序)”. The first thing I wish to get in Senior 1 is the ability to manage my time better. I’ll surely become busier with the coming semester (学期), and proper organization is important. From school clubs to academic competitions, everything should be set up in a way that doesn’t influence my health, which leads me to my second goal.
My mother has always told me put my health first, so in the future, I hope to both physically and mentally healthy. A person can’t study without having the energy to do so. In order to stay energetic, they must put their health first, no matter how busy they are, or how much work they have to complete.
And finally, I hope that I won’t be discouraged (泄气的) by my failure and never give up on my dreams. I hope that I’ll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal can apply to every student around the world. We should all respect one another’s likes and dislikes, and concentrate on each other’s advantages, not our disadvantages. Everyone should try to take part in all of life’s opportunities(机会).
Albert Einstein once said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance (平衡), you must keep moving.” In my case, it’s the other way around. In order to keep moving, I must keep my balance—the balance between studies and activities, efficiency (效率) and procrastination (拖延症), academics and health, passions and dislikes. The new journey is going to be a hard one, but if I set these goals, I believe I will make it through to the end.
12. During this school year, what does the author hopes to do
A. Concentrate on improving her overall grades. B. Join as many school clubs as possible.
C. Learn how to manage her time well. D. Spend more time on outdoor activities.
13. According to the article which of the following students should do
A. Not be afraid of failing. B. Always put their studies first.
C. Only do what they’re good at. D. Make different kinds of friends.
14 What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean
A. A strong feeling of dislike B. A strong feeling of love
C. A strong feeling of anger D. A strong feeling of joy
15. What does the author plan to do
A. Show what she likes about high school life.
B. Stress (强调) the importance of health to students.
C. Show how to balance our studies and activities.
D. Share her goals for the coming high school year.

Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it.

I am glad to receive your letter. Now I'm writing to tell you about my favorite sports.
Of all the sports, I like table tennis best. I think playing table tennis is beneficial to both physical and mental health, as it not only helps to build up my strength and confidence but also brings pleasure to my life. What's more, it makes me more energetic and effective in my study. I began to show great interest in it when I was seven years old. Now I'm on the school table tennis team. To improve my skills, I practice playing table tennis with my teammates and friends every weekend after finishing our homework.
By the way, I'm curious about your sports hobby. Would you please tell me about it Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,

Ella had two exams that day — physics and history. She really hated physics. It was her worst subject. Terry looked at her, and then looked away quickly. Ella thought Terry looked pleased, because she didn’t have a problem with physics, she didn’t have a problem with anything — Miss Perfect (完美)!
“I thought we were friends, but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now, she promised to help me go over for the physics exam too, but then she’s forgotten all my calls and texts. And when I rang her house, her mum just told me she was busy.” Ella thought angrily. At that moment, Mr. Reed asked all the students into the exam room.
Ella couldn’t answer some physics questions. Suddenly she saw Terry sitting two rows in front of her. Ella couldn’t believe it! Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Terry always got such good grades She felt really angry at Terry, and thought about telling the teacher, but… “Stop writing,” said Mr. Reed and started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Ella hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!
Ella wanted to talk to Terry at lunchtime, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. Ella went to the library to prepare for the history exam, which was her favorite. But she couldn’t concentrate. “Unfair! Terry was getting good grades by cheating (作弊) all that time.” She thought about telling a teacher, but everyone would hate her if she did that. Just then, Mr. Reed walked past her table. Ella told Mr. Reed everything she saw in the physics exam.
Ella was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam that afternoon. Mr. Reed wanted her to look at Terry and agreed if she saw that Terry was cheating in the exam.

【答案】One possible version:
She was working on the last question when she saw that Terry had her phone under the table. Ella nodded to Mr. Read. Mr. Read went to Terry quietly and picked up Terry’s phone. All was clear, Mr. Reed asked her to leave the classroom. Terry walked out crying. Everyone was staring at her and Ella felt really relaxed. She knew it wasn’t easy, but she stood by what was right. With a clearer conscience, Ella refocused on her history exam, determined to prove her own worth. As she submitted her paper, she felt a sense of accomplishment, knowing she had faced her challenges honestly.
Ella was walking towards the school gate when she saw Terry waiting for her there. “Ella, please wait.” Terry said, “I’m sorry I haven’t answered any of your calls, but my dad’s been ill for two weeks and had a heart operation today. During exams I was reading texts from my mum to see how it was going. I have explained to Mr. Read and he asked me to take the exam again.” Ella couldn’t help crying, either. “You should have told me this earlier. Let me know if you have difficulties. We are true friends.”
