In my ninth - grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A's, and a modern - day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life. More than once, I found myself wondering just how my students, who'd created these people knew their subjects so well.
But things were different for their first essay, which was about the question: "Why is writing important " Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be interpreted as a thesis (论点) statement. I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing, in and of itself, simply didn't strike them as important. This would have to change.
As a new unit started, I asked everyone to write a persuasive piece on a health - related topic of their choice. This time they found the exercise much more interesting. For the next two assignments, a personal - narrative unit followed by a creative - writing workshop, I only required that the piece meet the specifications of its genre (体裁) and that it contain a thesis. The results were staggering. The students took on diverse topics and turned in stories, 10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broadened my view and touched my heart.
I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However, my students demonstrated something more important to me. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing's most powerful significance — the ability to connect people, to put us in another's skin, to teach us what it means to be human.

A. Knowledge is power. B. Teaching is learning.

Over breakfast this morning, I enjoyed a short chat with Mia, my new Spanish study buddy. I explained what I had learned about the psychology of happiness from a Spanish - language podcast. By the end of the ten - minute conversation, I felt that I had mastered more of the language than if I'd done an hour of textbook exercises.
Mia, however, does not exist in real life. It is an AI that I created to take advantage of a
phenomenon called the “protege effect” (门徒效应). According to research, we learn more effectively when we teach someone else about the topic we’ve just explored — even if that person doesn’t really exist. The effect has its roots in the principle of “learning by teaching,” pioneered in the early 1980s by Jean - Pol Martin, a French teacher working in Germany. To improve his students’ language learning, he had them research and present different parts of the curriculum to their classmates. The technique boosted their motivation, self - confidence, and communicative abilities, and it soon spread to many other schools in the country.
Later, a group of Stanford scientists tested the idea. In a pioneering experiment, Catherine Chase asked 62 eighth - graders to use a computer program to study how fever affects the body. Over two lessons, the students had to read a text and then create a flowchart. Half the teens did the exercise as a form of self - study, while the others were told that their diagram would help to teach a virtual character. At the end, those in the teaching role had learned considerably more of the material, with much stronger performance on tests.
Chase named this the protege effect, and it has since been replicated (复制) many times. These later studies suggest that learning by teaching is more powerful than other memory techniques. The brain boost appears to arise as much from the expectation of teaching as the act itself. If we know that others are going to learn from us, we feel a sense of responsibility to provide the right information. As a result, we make a greater effort to fill in the gaps in our understanding and correct any mistaken assumptions before passing our knowledge on to others. This process then helps to enhance what we have learned.
To put the protege effect into practice, a face - to - face conversation with a human partner is ideal, but it can be hard to find one. Fortunately, there are other ways. You might choose to present your progress as a blog or video aimed at other learners. Or you might, like me, choose to chat with an A.I. prompt ChatGPT to act as a curious Spanish student, Mia, who listens to what I’ve been learning and asks suitable questions and follow - ups. With voice features, I can practice speaking as well. Though it felt awkward to talk to my computer at first, I became more confident in real - life interactions after just a few weeks.
60. Jean - Pol Martin’s teaching method is mentioned in the text to ______.

A. flowcharts are useful tools to learn science
B. self - study is more effective than group learning
C. virtual characters cannot replace human teachers

B. It motivates deeper learning by creating a sense of duty.
C. It promotes systematic review of previously mastered material.
D. It relies on external feedback to correct errors in comprehension.
63. With regard to applying the “protege effect,” the author would most agree that ______.
A. teaching real people is best but not always possible B. chatting with AI is as effective as real-life interactions C. overcoming the initial discomfort of teaching is the key D. presenting learning progress publicly offers greater benefits

B. illustrate the practical application of a psychological phenomenon

D. showcase the technical complexities of creating virtual study partners
65. The author's attitude to using AI for the protege effect can be described as ______.
A. overly enthusiastic without practical support B. entirely unconcerned about non-human interactions

D
As parents, we want our children to reach their full academic potential. We read to them, encourage their special talents, and support them when they have problems. If they choose to participate in music or sports, we also help them reach their potential in those areas. These are all good goals.
There is, however, an even more important goal. It is a goal more difficult than excellence in arithmetic or soccer or the violin. Parents are responsible for providing their children with a moral compass. They need to nurture and treasure goodness in their children. Every child has the capacity to become a good, decent human being. To fulfill this capacity, children need the guidance and support of parents and other adults. Raising good, moral children is the most important job we will have.
What is a good, decent human being While we may differ on some details, most would agree that respect for others, kindness and caring, honesty and honor, and a reverence (尊重) for life are key. Good, decent human beings are people with a firm sense of direction and purpose—a moral compass— to guide their lives. Children need our help to develop these characteristics and values.
While most people try to act with honor and kindness, doing so consistently is difficult and requires lifelong effort. Goodness is not easy for an adult and it is even more difficult for a child. They do not have the knowledge, experiences, or cognitive skills to understand the impact and consequences of their actions.
Reinforcement (强化) is sometimes an efficient approach to building positive behavior. The child behaves in a desired way and the parents provide reinforcement. The behavior then typically increases in frequency. This approach works for teaching "Please" and "Thank you". The new behavior is maintained, because it helps the child get along in the world.
Loving, everyday interactions are the beginning of raising moral children. The child who falls and receives adult concern learns how to treat others kindly when they stumble (绊倒). The child
who makes a mistake and is encouraged to try again learns how to support others. When parents intercede (调解) graciously for their child, the child can see the basis for friendship. When we treat children with respect and care, we provide a positive model of how to behave. These early experiences establish patterns for their treatment of others.
66. What are adults supposed to do to make children become good, decent human beings
A. To encourage their children to learn more about sports or music.
B. To help their children to develop their special talents.
C. To support their children when they have problems.
D. To reinforce positive behavior through everyday interaction
67. Why is it difficult for a child to act with honor and kindness
A. Because it is difficult for adults to do so.
B. Because a child is not mature enough to do so.
C. Because a child does not understand the abstract concept of "goodness".
D. Because a child does not have a model to follow.
68. The author talks about teaching "Please" and "Thank you" to demonstrate that __________.
A. saying "Please" and "Thank you" is a good habit
B. politeness is the nature of a moral compass
C. politeness helps the child get along in the world
D. reinforcement is an efficient approach to building positive behavior
69. What conclusion can we draw from the passage
A. Every child without exception will become a good, decent human being.
B. There's a universally accepted criterion for "a good, decent human being".
C. The more reinforcement, the more the child behaves in a positive way.
D. The child with a single parent will not become a good, decent human being.
70. What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A. To emphasize the importance of adults' concern when a child falls.
B. To show how to guide children to develop friendship.
C. To explain why adults should treat children with respect and care.
D. To show how love and everyday interactions work in molding a moral child.
