1. What makes good communication
communication n. 表达；交流 communicate v. 交流；表达
Language points
You should often have communication with your teachers.
你应当经常和老师们交流。
Some teenagers have no communication with their parents.
一些青少年和父母缺乏交流。
Sometimes I communicate with my friends on the phone.
有时我通过电话和朋友们交流。

2. talk face to face
face to face 面对面
Let’s talk face to face next time. 我们下次面对面谈吧。
常见的类似短语如下：
heart to heart 心连心
back to back 背靠背
shoulder to shoulder 肩并肩
3. use sign language
sign n. 手势；迹象；标志 v. 签(名)；签字
He gave me the OK sign. 他给我做了个OK的手势。
His illness seems to show no sign of changing.
他的病好像没有改变的迹象。
Look at the sign. It says, “No parking!”
看那个标志，上面写着:“禁止停车！”
(1) sign作名词，表示人们在交流谈话时做的各种手势，人或事物显现出
的各种迹象或给人以提示作用的标语、标志等。
Please sign your name here. 请在这里签名。
We sign in at seven thirty and sign out at five thirty every day.
我们每天七点半签到，五点半签退。
(2) sign 作动词，表示“签(名)；签字”。
常用短语: sign in 签到 sign out 签退
Sign language is one of the most important forms of communication.
手语是最重要的交流方式之一。
4. When will the man pick Jim up
pick up 是“动词+副词”型短语。名词作宾语时，可放在pick与up之间或up之后；人称代词作宾语时，则必须放在pick与up之间。
①（开车）接人
I will pick you up at the train station. 我将去火车站接你。
② 捡起；举起
She picked up the wallet and passed it to me. 她捡起钱包递给了我。
③ 接电话
Don’t pick up your phone when driving. 开车时不要接电话。

(1) local adj. 当地的；地方的
We had dinner at a local restaurant. 我们在当地一家饭馆吃晚饭。
The local government provides public service for people.
当地政府为人们提供公共服务。
It's important to respect the local customs when you visit a new place.
当你参观一个新地方时，尊重当地风俗是很重要的。
There will be heavy rain in local areas. 局部地区将会有大雨。
(2) n. 当地人；本地人
These paper cuttings are popular with the locals.
这些剪纸很受当地人欢迎。
The vegetables are locally grown. 这些蔬菜是本地种植的。
local的副词形式是locally，意为“在本地；当地”。
