Little Johnny lived in a poor village. One summer day Johnny’s mother sent him to the field to pick up some dried wood for the fire.
Johnny worked very hard. By the time the sun was high, he was very hot and wished for a cool place to rest and have some food. As he walked along, he found some fine, wild blueberries.
“How good these will be with my bread and butter,” thought Johnny. He picked up all of the blueberries. As he was lifting the first blueberry to his mouth, he remembered his sick mother. With this in mind, he put the blueberry back again.
He thought how refreshing they would be for her, yet was still looking at them with a longing eye.
“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said. He divided them into two parts, but each part looked small. He put them together again.
“I will only eat one,” he thought.
But, as he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest, and he put it back.
When the sun was beginning to sink, Johnny set out for home. How happy he felt, then, that he had all his blueberries for his mother!
He heard his mother’s faint voice calling him. “Is that you, Johnny I am thirsty, and am longing for some tea.”
Johnny ran to her and joyfully offered his wild blueberries. “And you saved them for your sick mother, didn’t you ” said she, laying her hand lovingly on his head, with tears in her eyes.

“It seems as if a gas lamp explodes in your face when you light it,” Justin Schmidt, an expert on insects, wrote about his battle with black polybia wasps.
This description is one of 78 entries on ant, bee, and wasp stings in his Schmidt Sting Pain Index. Schmidt willingly offered his arm to different stinging insects to create the index featured in his 2016 book The Sting of the Wild. The index ranks stinging pain from one to four and gives a detailed account of Schmidt’s face-off with each insect with a poetic, and sometimes humorous, description.
Schmidt began collecting data for the pain index in 1973 after digging up groups of harvester ants in Georgia. He got stung and described the episode as a “tearing pain”. “I realized the harvester ant stings were dramatically different from those of honey bees, wasps, and hornets,” said Schmidt. He found that there was a difference in venom and set out to conduct a larger survey. Collecting data on stings became Schmidt’s side project. While most people would run away, Schmidt went out of his way to get to stinging insects. To bring live samples back to the lab to study their venom, he often used his bare hands to grab fistfuls of the insect. If he didn’t get stung during that process, he’d apply one to his arm to be stung once or twice.
What made the Schmidt Sting Pain Index unique was the colloquial manner in which he described insects’ stings. Schmidt would associate a strike of lightning with the sting of a tarantula hawk and the pain of a messy divorce with the sting of a wasp. He thought it was a more effective way to inform people how much each sting hurt. While the numerical scale is still valuable to entomologists, most people don’t identify with numbers, he explained. “Numbers are kind of an unnatural thing,” he said. “I can’t even remember the numbers. I have to look at my notebook and see how I evaluated it, whereas the descriptions are much easier to feel.”
28. What can we learn about black polybia wasps
A. They can be quite dangerous.
B. They are an endangered species.
C. They can hardly interest Schmidt.
D. They tend to fly around gas lamps.
29. What inspired Schmidt to conduct the new survey for his index
A. A book about insects published in 2016.
B. His experience of raising an ant group.
C. The stings he got from harvester ants.
D. His battle with black polybia wasps.
30. Which of the following can best describe Schmidt
A. Adventurous and athletic.
B. Generous and committed.
C. Talented and ambitious.
D. Courageous and devoted.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. How the Schmidt Sting Pain Index measures the hurt of stings.
B. Why Schmidt adopted the colloquial manner to describe stings.
C. Whether it is possible to describe stings in the colloquial manner.
D. What helped Schmidt to describe stings in the colloquial manner.
D
Sleep, considered a luxury by many, is essential for a person’s health. Researchers have found that lack of sleep and tiredness increase a person’s risk of developing severe medical conditions, such as obesity, high blood sugar levels, and heart disease. Now, a new study has found that getting enough sleep is also the key to improving academic performance.
Jeffrey Gross, the university science professor who led the research, was not trying to find the relationship between sleep and grades when he handed out smart watches to the 100 students in his chemistry class. Instead, the professor hoped the devices, which track a person’s physical activity, would show a connection between exercise and academic achievement.
While Gross’s data showed no relationship between these two factors, the study found something surprising. As the researchers were analyzing their data, they noticed that there was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a student got and their results in the course’s 11 quizzes, three midterm tests, and the final exam.
Even more interesting, it was not enough for students to just head to bed early the night before a test. Instead, it’s the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that matters most.
The time students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher-performing student. “When you go to bed matters,” Gross says, “If you go to bed at 10, or 12, or 1 at night, and sleep for seven hours, your performance is the same. But if you go to bed after 2, your performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So, quantity isn’t everything.”
Perhaps the most interesting was the huge impact that small differences in sleep patterns had on the students’ grades. The overall course grades for students averaging six and a half hours of sleep each night were 25% lower than students who averaged just one hour more sleep. Similarly, students who varied their bedtime by even one hour each night had grades that dropped 45% below those with more regular bedtimes.
32. What have researchers found about lack of sleep
A. It can help people lose weight.
B. It can make people more likely to get sick.
C. It can reduce people’s risk of heart disease.
D. It can improve people’s academic performance.
33. What was Professor Jeffrey Gross’s original intention
A. To study the relationship between sleep and grades.
B. To investigate the impact of sleep on students’ health.
C. To prove that smart watches can track physical activity.
D. To find out the connection between exercise and academic achievement.
34. According to the text, which of the following is correct
A. The more sleep students get, the better their grades.
B. It’s the sleep you get during the daytime that matters most.
C. Differences in sleep patterns have a great impact on students’ grades.
D. Students who go to bed after 2 am can perform well by sleeping longer.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. The importance of exercise for students.
B. The relationship between sleep and health.
C. The impact of sleep on academic performance.
D. The benefits of using smart watches in class.

One of my first nights on call started by responding to a message on my phone, and then I arrived at the animal hospital hurriedly.
I had been working as a veterinary nurse at a university hospital for only nine months. My job included assisting doctors in performing operations on animals. And I was already familiar with the basic operation procedure—preparing operation tools, giving anesthesia, positioning the animal on the operation table, cleaning the injured part, at last, attaching the steel plate to the broken bone.
On this particular night, the only information given was an emergency that needed my immediate attention. I was calm, yet anxious as I headed to the hospital. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, I found that two doctors and another nurse had just arrived. They were checking the patient in a stall (牲畜棚) near the operation room.
I entered the stall, surprised to find there stood a tiny horse. Obviously, she lived outside all year round. Her entire body was covered with caked-on mud. She looked normal. The only thing out of place was the unnatural angle at which she held her right back leg, which was injured. As I came closer, I realized she was shaking and sweating, even though the night was cool.
As I approached, I heard her family talking to her, their voices quiet and serious. “It’s okay, Doro. We love you. Doctors will fix you right up,” said a small child. Her name was Daisy and the horse was 28-year-old with a broken leg. For a horse, such an injury usually means the death sentence. And Doro’s age was against her.
Her family included Mom, Dad, Daisy and her twin brothers, who were as worried as the little girl about the seriousness of the horse’s condition. Looking wide-eyed and frightened, Daisy turned to her father and asked, “Daddy, you won’t let Doro die, will you ” That look in her eyes struck everyone’s heart. I knew we would be working all night to save Doro. Soon, we anxiously prepared for the operation.
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请在答题卡的相应位置作答。

第二节 读后续写
One possible version:
I rushed into Central Supply, the area where all our surgical instruments were kept. Quickly, I gathered supplies. The following steps related to the surgery then started one by one. The night passed slowly, hour after hour. We were all busy, nervous and working closely. Finally, at 5:30, the bandage was on. Doro was moved into the recovery stall, where she soon woke up. Her condition looked good. Doro’s family had anxiously waited all night. I approached them to inform them of the good news.
“She has woken up and now you can see e!” I cheerfully told the family. Soon, Daisy hugged Doro’s neck, sobbing, “Oh, Doro, you made it!” The rest of the family crowded around, tears streaming down as Doro made a sound in response. We medical workers couldn’t hold back our own tears. With our care, Doro eventually left the hospital. One day, we received a thank-you letter and a picture of Daisy proudly riding Doro. She had a full recovery and was back to her pleasant days, running around with youngsters. I was so proud of my work.

I want you to go out there and play exactly the way you have been playing all year, with confidence and positivity. There is nothing to fear. If you play to the level that I know you are capable of, you can win this final. Max is a great player. (19) In fact, with 16 tennis medals from 20 tennis finals, he is more than good. He is brilliant. But I believe you are better. You have youth on your side. He has experience, (19) but you are faster, stronger, and hungrier. Go out there and show him that you are the best tennis player in the world. Forget about your club, your fans and all the TV reporters out there. Just do it for yourself. Prove to yourself that all those years of training means something — that you are a champion!
OK, this is it. You can make your way to center court now. I’ll be cheering from the stands. Good luck! (20)
