I remember when I started telling people about my upcoming solo(独自的)travel to Mongolia,I was met with surprise and often confusion. My manager at the time gave me a funny look and warned me against going there.I didn’t panic.I'd done my research.Mongolia wasn’t as dangerous as people thought —in fact,it's far safer than a lot of more frequented countries, like South America.
The thing about Mongolia is..no one has been there.I don't know a single other person in my life who has been there.Except for the friends I made while I was there.
That's the thing about solo travel—you don’t technically have to do it alone.Since Mongolia held some risks to it and is considered one of the most remote regions in the world,I decided to join a small- group tour.
I admit I was a little nervous. When I looked up past trips on this company's website,it looked like it was a whole bunch of couples that frequented these tours.I started picturing six couples, enjoying a Mongolian sunset…and then little old me.Just off to the side, enjoying it on my own.
When I arrived in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, and met the rest of the tour,I was both surprised and thrilled to realize that,of the ten people on tour, there was only one pair.Everybody else was there on their own.And instead of sitting off to the side like I'd feared,I'd been tent-paired with a lovely young American girl called Annie. On what other occasions might I have met her if not for this solo trip The decision to travel solo,to not let the fact that I didn't have a travel companion stop me,was what brought us together.
And that's the beauty of travelling solo.When I’m alone,I’m more likely to branch out and talk to the locals and strangers,even if there's a language barrier.And,in my experience,most people are good people.Start up a conversation,ask questions,and be curious.Most importantly,don't be a tourist.Be a traveler.

A new study published in the Journal of Applied Ecology revealed when, where and how most songbirds migrate offshore over North American coasts..This data can help wind energy managers cut down on birds dying from hitting wind turbines(涡轮机)while generating sustainable energy
The researchers studied 10 years of weather radar data from 16 sites and found that birds flying over the Atlantic Coast and the Gulf of Mexico gather more closely and move for a shorter time than those flying over land.More birds also migrate in fall than in spring.Shannon Curley, the study's lead researcher, explained,"Birds migrate over the sea on fewer nights than over land. There's no place to rest and refuel on the water,so birds may wait for ideal atmospheric conditions, such as favorable winds, before making an offshore crossing.”
This short yet critical time window gives wind energy managers a chance to reduce collisions(相撞). Curley said they could pause turbine work on nights when migration is most intense—a practice that is currently more common in Europe than North America.“These peak nights of migration tend to have fairly nice weather and calmer winds, and are therefore not the nights when wind operators have a huge energy harvest,"Curley noted.“So there might be a sweet spot where we can target these big migration nights and give these birds safe passage.”
The study also found that songbirds migrating offshore fly at lower altitudes than those migrating over land, potentially putting them at greater risk of wind turbine collisions. The U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service says 140,000 to 327,000 birds die from land turbines each year. But no one knows how many die from offshore turbines, since dead birds'bodies wash away easily. So using radar technology to identify high-risk areas is key.
With one-third of all American bird species rapidly declining,data-driven decisions about turbine siting and operations can point the way to sustainable energy while also saving birds.“Our hope is that this work will help identify high-risk,high-use areas for birds and contribute to positive green energy solutions,"Curley said.

David Uttal,a scientist at Northwestern University, has always been poor at finding his way.At 13,he got lost on a Boy Scout hike for two and a half days. The world is full of people like Uttal—and their opposites, the folks who always seem to know exactly where they are and how to get where they want to go.
These differences are obvious, but explaining them has proved challenging. Now,research using virtual reality suggests that to some extent, navigational(导航的)skills are shaped by upbringing.
A2020 study highlighted this. The researchers compared the performance of more than 2,600 twins as they navigated through a virtual environment to test whether navigational ability runs in families. It does, they found—but only modestly.Instead, the biggest contributor to people's performance was what geneticists call “non-shared environmental factors”—the unique experiences each person accumulates as their life unfolds.Good navigators,it appears, are mostly made, not born.
Another large-scale experiment provided further insight.Researchers developed a smartphone game, “Sea Hero Quest”,in which players navigate through a virtual environment to locate checkpoints.Based on data from nearly four million players worldwide, they discovered that cultural factors were linked to wayfinding skills.People from Nordic countries, where the navigation sport of orienteering is popular, performed slightly better.
Results like these suggest that life experience may be one of the biggest determinants of navigational ability.Indeed, experience may even underlie one of the most consistent findings in navigation:men tend to perform better than women. It turns out this gender gap is more a question of culture and experience than of born ability.Nordic countries, for example, where gender equality is greatest, show almost no gender difference in navigation. In contrast, men far outperform women in places where women face cultural restrictions on exploring their environment.
To Uttal, these findings carry an optimistic implication."The good news is that navigation is trainable,"he notes,"It's never too late to become a better navigator. You just need to give yourself opportunities to explore and pay attention to your surroundings."

The adults in your life play an important role in shaping the person you are.Through their encouragement and guidance, they help you to flourish, learn, and grow. 16 There might also be times when your relationship comes under extra pressure. At these moments,it's hard not to focus on everything they're doing“wrong”,but there are ways to reset and tell yourself what you value about them.
● Keep talking.
It's easy to lock yourself away when you're upset with your parents or after an argument. It's normal for healthy relationships to break down occasionally. 17 The key to communicating well is to be open about your feelings but try not to use your words to wound or punish.
●Why appreciation matters.
Life isn’t always easy. But by looking for things to feel grateful for,you can reflect on the positives in life, even in the toughest times. 18 Building an attitude of gratitude takes time and practice.By noticing all the good that your parents do will not only build and improve relationships, but create a positive cycle, where everyone feels that their efforts are acknowledged.
● 19
It might also help to keep in mind that even though the adults in your life can seem all-knowing, they're actually just ordinary people with strengths and weaknesses. 20 Often, they're only trying to protect and guide you. This can feel annoying when you want to lead your own life and make your own choices. But good communication is about compromise and can take a bit of practice.Remember that your parents are learning, too!
A.That's not to say this is easy.
B.Grow together with your parents.
C.Parents always have the final say.

Collecting and setting up the Christmas village was a special tradition in our family passed down through generations. It was composed of fifty-three tiny, decorated houses, which rcpresented decades of family memories.
My husband and I had always done the job together, but this year was different.Due to a business commitment,he couldn't return until Christmas Eve.This was the first time that I had attempted to put up my fullChristmas village alone.Looking at various Christmas decorations —lights, ornaments(挂件), and fake snow—spread across the floor,I had no idea how long it would take me to get the work done.
“Do you need some help ”my son asked, carefully stepping over piles of boxes. He was home on vocation and was preparing for his college program,so I hesitated, not wanting to distract him from his studies."I need a break anyway. So,where shall we begin "He rubbed his hands together,a smile brightening his face.
Awaking from my exhausted blank,I joined him across the room and tried to begin making sense of the chaos. As we worked side by side,I taught him all my tricks for setting up villages and shared the family stories about how the village began and how it grew into this huge collection.I even showed him how to make a few mistakes and how to fix them.
Three hours passed. My body was aching and my hands were trembling with tiredness, but the village was still half done."I’m already worn out."I murmured.
"Maybe skip them this year,"he suggested gently."It's beautiful as it is."
Since I was scheduled to work the next day,we cleaned up the room and left the village exactly as it was.The next morning,as I was heading out the door,I paused and looked at the village again.I wish I had pushed through and it could have been much better.Just then,my son came out of his room and saw the disappointment in my eyes.He waved me off with an understanding smile.
