A realtor (房地产经纪人) in Missouri is determined to make her hometown “a city where no one sleeps outside”.
For nine years Linda Brown and her husband David organized a nightly drop-in shelter where homeless people in Springfield could eat, shower, do laundry, use a computer, and socialize during bingo games and karaoke, but they wanted to do more. So they transformed an abandoned (废弃的) mobile home property into a village of tiny homes that provides permanent (永久的) housing to the chronically disabled homeless.
They opened Eden Village in 2018, building 31 tiny homes that are now occupied by people like Jonathan Fisher. He had lived on the streets for two years when he met Linda Brown. “In the worst moments of my life, Linda gave me guidance, care, and made me feel like I was still worth something,” Fisher says. He says that Linda took the time to learn about how he became homeless, and then encouraged him as he rebuilt his life. She even offered him a job. Now Fisher works full-time for Linda, helping others experiencing struggles similar to what he went through.
The driving philosophy (哲学) behind Eden Village is as follows: The root causes of a person’s homelessness cannot be thoroughly addressed until his or her immediate housing needs are met. “When I watched my homeless friends walk into a hidden, wet, and cold camp, I realized I had to do something,” Linda said. “And that made me have the idea to build the tiny-home village that serves as a place where the chronically disabled homeless can live with dignity and self-worth.”
“It needs someone who wants to do something, and then believes they can. I’ve watched Linda Brown live that out,” says Nate Schleuter, the chief visionary officer for Eden Village. “It’s exciting to watch the homeless who thought they’d live the rest of their life on the street now have a home.”

B. We should help the homeless quit some bad habits.
C. Housing is the key to solving the problem of homelessness.
D. Medical treatment should be given to the homeless.
7. What is Nate’s attitude towards Linda according to the last paragraph

It may seem hard to believe, but snacking several times a day can improve your health and fitness — exercise snacking, that is. “Exercise snacks” are short bursts of activity — 30 seconds to 5 or 10 minutes max — that include almost any type of movement. Think of climbing stairs, walking, cycling, or dancing. Today, many studies prove these mini workouts can make a difference.
Doing 15-to-30-second exercise snacks three times daily was shown to improve cardiorespiratory (心和肺的) fitness levels and exercise abilities in inactive adults, according to a small January 2022 study published in the journal Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews.
Adults who reported they didn’t do exercise saw a 17% to 18% drop in cancer cases after they began doing just 3.4 to 3.6 minutes of intense (激烈的) physical activity daily, a July 2023 study of 22,398 people found. Their daily physical activity was done in bursts lasting less than one or two minutes. Hitting 4.5 minutes (in total) of intense physical activity each day was connected with a 31% to 32% lower risk of cancer, according to the study published in JAMA Oncology.
The advantages of movement also include brain health. Doing even a small amount of easy-to-hard physical activity every day lowers your risk of dementia (痴呆), according to a March study in JAMDA: The Journal of the Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medical Association.
Exercise snacks are a favorite tool used by Dr. Supatra Tovar, owner of Dr. Supatra Tovar&Associates. “I’m a big proponent of behavior change that starts tiny,” Tovar said. “So I like to create behaviors with my customers that are easy, achievable, and double every day of the week.”
“Your body is kind of lazy,” said Michael Betts, a personal trainer and director at Train Fitness who’s based in London. “Doing these little exercise snacks reminds your body that it does need to work to keep and improve its overall health.”
8. What can be called an exercise snack according to the text
A. Singing songs with your classmates. B. Turning off the lights before leaving school.

A. Lowering cancer risk. B. Improving muscle strength.

Professor Lum seems to be under the spell of ChatGPT, but let’s not get carried away with the AI chatbot craze. While it does have some benefits, his arguments are like a leaky boat in a stormy sea-full of holes.
According to Professor Lum, ChatGPT offers students a wealth of information. Sure, it’s like having a walking encyclopedia (百科全书), but learning is not about copying an answer. It’s about the journey of discovery. ChatGPT, armed with its vast database, denies students the opportunity to explore and learn through their own efforts. It’s like awarding a participation medal for a race that hasn’t even begun!
He also claims that ChatGPT improves communication skills. Seriously Chatting with an AI is not the same as having a real conversation. How can we expect students to handle the complexities of the real world if all they know is how to talk to a chatbot Let’s not turn them into socially awkward bots themselves.
Oh, and let’s not forget about critical thinking. Professor Lum thinks ChatGPT challenges students to think critically. But come on, folks! It’s merely a machine! It’s not going to teach them how to question assumptions, analyze evidence, or come up with innovative solutions. We need human interaction and lively debates for that.
Lastly, Professor Lum believes ChatGPT can provide support and guidance. Again, seriously Are we going to replace human emotions with lines of code (代码) ChatGPT might offer some comforting words, but it can’t replace the warmth and understanding that can only be found in human interaction. Let us not abandon our students, leaving them to feel more alone and disconnected than ever before.
Professor Lum’s opinion regarding ChatGPT warns us against too much reliance on technology. Rather than prioritizing ChatGPT, the focus should be on developing critical thinking, promoting genuine human interaction, and emphasizing the core aspects of education.
12. What is compared to a participation medal in paragraph 2
A. A walking encyclopedia. B. A journey to explore.
C. A vast database. D. An answer.
13. What can be inferred about ChatGPT from paragraphs 3~5
A. It is not good at socializing. B. It is a skilled critical thinker.
C. It offers nothing helpful to humans. D. It forms a warm bond with humans.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards ChatGPT
A. Totally negative B. Fully supportive C. Highly doubtful D. Quite indifferent
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To criticize a viewpoint. B. To question an authority.
C. To clarify two arguments. D. To compare two chatbots.
