The days of the hunter are almost over in India. This is partly because there is practically nothing left to kill, and partly because some steps have been taken, mainly by banning tiger-shooting, to protect those animals which still survive.
Some people say that Man is naturally a hunter. I disagree with this view. Surely our earliest forefathers, who at first possessed no weapons, spent their time digging for roots, and were no doubt themselves often hunted by meat-eating animals.
I believe the main reason why the modern hunter kills is that he thinks people will admire his courage in overpowering dangerous animals. Of course, there are some who truly believe that the killing is not really the important thing, and that the chief pleasure lies in the joy of the hunt and the beauties of the wild countryside. There are also those for whom hunting in fact offers a chance to prove themselves and risk death by design; these men go out after dangerous animals like tigers, even if they say they only do it to rid the countryside of a threat. I can respect reasons like these, but they are clearly different from the need to strengthen your high opinion of yourself.
The greatest big-game hunters expressed in their writings something of these finer motives. One of them wrote.
“You must properly respect what you are after and shoot it cleanly and on the animal’s own territory(领地)。You must fix forever in your mind all the wonders of that particular day. This is better than letting him grow a few years older to be attacked and wounded by his own son and eventually eaten, half alive, by other animals, Hunting is not a cruel and senseless killing - not if you respect the thing you kill, not if you kill to enrich your memories, not if you kill to feed your people.”
I can understand such beliefs, and can compare these hunters with those who hunted lions with spears(矛) and bravely caught them by the tail. But this is very different from many tiger-shoots I have seen, in which modern weapons were used. The so-called hunters fired from tall trees or from the backs of trained elephants. Such methods made tigers seem no more dangerous than rabbits.

As a child, Huang Rongbing would watch his mother, Wen Xiuzhen, comb her long and thick hair. After forming a bun (圆发髻) at the back of her head, she would decorate it with colorful flowers, the 34-year-old recalled.
All the women in the small fishing village of Xunpu in Quanzhou, Fujia n province, had long hair like Wen. The colorful and distinctive floral headdress she often wore is known as zanhua or zanhuawei. It is listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2008. As an old saying in Xunpu goes, “put flowers in your hair in this life and you’ll also be pretty in the afterlife.”
The head ornament (装饰品) ultimately inspired Huang’s career path. In 2016, he and his older sister opened a salon where tourists could get their hair styled in the Xunpu tradition and have their photos taken. “We have been fully booked and now there are over 200 businesses offering services to dress tourists with a zanhua,” said Huang.
Yin Siqi is one of Huang’s customers. Wen put flowers on Yin’s bun, which formed a circular shape that symbolized unity, perfection and completion. Yin returned to the village several times and took photos of herself in traditional Xunpu dress and wearing a zanhua. One of her social media posts received over 40,000 “likes”.
In 2022, Hu Titi, another customer, traveled to visit Wen and undergo the full zanhua experience. Last year, she brought zanhua culture to Paris in France. Under the Eiffel Tower, she shot photos and videos of herself dressed in traditional Chinese clothes with a zanhua in her hair. The increase in tourist visits has pleased Huang not just from a business standpoint but also because it has led to greater awareness of the history and culture behind zanhua headwear.
“Earning a reputation for their hard work, perseverance and compassion (同情心) , the women of Xunpu are well-known for harvesting the highest quality seafood,” said Huang. “When they put a zanhua on their heads, they express their wish to pursue happiness. The flowers are seen as a symbol of hope,” he added.

A team of researchers from the University of Groningen, the University of Tuscia, Roflight, Lemselobrink and the Royal Netherlands Air Force has designed, built and tested a robot named RobotFalcon fashioned to look and fly like a peregrine falcon(游隼)as a means of driving off flocks(群)of birds around airports.
Birds whether alone or in flocks, are a menace to flying planes. When a plane strikes a bird, damage will be caused-occasionally with disastrous results. The plane that famously landed on the Hudson River in 2009, for example, was damaged by birds entering the plane’s engines accidentally, causing their failure.
Scientists have been working on ways to prevent birds from entering flight spaces but thus far have met with only partial success. Currently drones(无人机)are used to scare birds away, as are trained falcons arid systems that make sounds of birds in great pain.
In this how effort, the researchers took a new approach - they designed a remote-controlled flying robot just like a peregrine falcon that catches and kills other birds, which therefore try to avoid it.
The result is the RobotFalcon, which is painted to look like a real peregrine falcon and is powered by an internal engine. To capably copy the flying patterns of a falcon, the researchers studied the flying characteristics of real birds and then added features to their robot bird that would allow it to fly in similar ways.
During field tests, the robot bird scared away entire flocks of birds within five minutes of arrival: on half of these flights, it was able to clear the field within 70 seconds.
