Long-Distance Travellers
Birds are amazing animals, and their most amazing skill is their sense of direction. Some migrate long distances. They know exactly where to fly, without a compass!
Migrating birds often fly thousands of kilometres. They find their way back to the same place year after year. Even young birds that have not migrated before seem to know which way to go.
In Europe, you may see big groups of swallows sitting on telephone wires. As the weather gets colder in autumn, they get ready to fly away to warmer countries. These birds fly south to Africa for the winter. They will return north to Europe to breed next summer.
Birds have many ways to prepare for their migration journey. The little sedge warbler (水蒲苇莺) doubles its weight by eating lots of insects just before it leaves Europe. It flies 9,000 kilometres. It travels without stopping for four days to spend winter in South Africa.
Bar-headed geese (斑头雁) breed in Tibet (西藏). They then fly over the Himalayas (喜马拉雅山) to India. They have to fly at a height of over 6,000 metres to get over the huge mountains. Other birds, such as cranes, also fly high over mountains.

A Postcard From Dubai
Dear Lingling,
Greetings from Dubai. I am here with my family for a wonderful holiday. Dubai is an amazing place and I have just come back from a tour of the most fantastic hotel in the world, the Burj-al-Arab. People say it is the only seven-star hotel in the world.
The hotel stands on a man-made island. It was once the tallest hotel in the world and is an amazing building. The architects have designed it to look like a very beautiful Arab dhow heading out to sea.
Inside the hotel, almost everything is decorated with gold leaf and all the floors are marble. The lobby is very large and there is a lovely fountain. We couldn’t see any of the bedrooms, but I can imagine that they would be lovely too. One of the hotel’s restaurants makes you feel like you are under the sea, because there are glass walls on each side.
There is another restaurant at the top of the hotel with the most amazing views.
The tour guide told us that the hotel cost $ 650 million to build, and the most expensive room costs $ 28,000 per night. He also told us that lots of famous people had stayed there. Roger Federer and Andre Agassi even played a tennis match on the roof.
Well, maybe one day we will get the chance to stay there! Until then I thought you would like this postcard of the amazing Burj-al-Arab.
Much love,
Betty

I heard the sound of the boat workers telling people to hurry up and get on board. As always, I was running late and I wasn’t sure if I would get on the boat on time. Luckily, I was able to catch the boat and start my trip.
I was going to work on a small island. It was just one of those days when things were not going right for me. I sat in a corner of the boat with my backpack next to me. I wanted to be alone and I didn’t want anyone to talk to me.
Thinking quietly to myself, I looked up at the sky. I saw some clouds that looked like giving me a thumbs-up sign. It looked so perfect that I couldn’t help smiling. Seeing the shape of the clouds made me feel relaxed and calm. It seemed to tell me that everything was going to be all right.
Life is not always perfect. We might be surprised by the bad things that happen to us. Sometimes, things feel messy, while at other times, it feels like you have it all together. We should learn to take it all in, stop for a while and appreciate what we have, whether it’s something big or something small.
Remember to smile and look up at the sky. You never know when you might see something that brightens your day.
