In Baiyin, a city in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, cool night winds carry the smell of herbs (药草) like astragalus and angelica. Under bright lights, people gather around cupping stations and pulse-reading houses. This lively scene is at the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Night Market in Wansheng Park. Here, TCM wisdom—with a history of thousands of years—has become a popular evening activity for Generation Z (those born from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s).
Yu Huiyan, a 21-year-old, said the hot weather made her tired and sleepy. She came to the night market for herbal help because TCM had worked well for her before. After checking her tongue and pulse, a doctor found she had a weak pulse and felt tired. The doctor then gave her a mix of TCM herbs to increase her energy, reduce dampness in her body and keep her body in a good state. Yu and many of her friends have grown interested in TCM in recent years. She even learned TCM in college and now wants to use TCM to care for herself and others.
At the night market, young people love TCM treatments like acupuncture (针灸), cupping, foot baths, and ear seeds. Since early July, over 30 local medical groups have sent staff here to give free health checks, answer questions and offer personal advice. Zhu Dongmei, the organizer, says over 2,000 people visit daily, mostly young people waiting for pulse checks, herbal packages or tea.
Similar TCM night markets can be found across China. In Shenyang, there are TCM cultural product zones and fun activities. In Nanchang, robots do moxibustion (艾灸) and 3D foot scans. Da Chunhe, a local health official, says, “TCM is a national treasure. As more young people learn about it, they will benefit from it.”
4. Why did Yu Huiyan come to the TCM Night Market
A. To learn TCM theories. B. To buy some equipment.
C To work as a TCM volunteer. D. To get herbal help for her tiredness.
5. What can people get from the TCM Night Market in Wansheng Park
A. Paid TCM treatments. B. Robotic moxibustion services.
C. Free service from local medical staff. D. Various kinds of TCM textbooks.
6. What is Da Chunhe’s attitude towards the development of TCM
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Negative.
7. What is the main idea of the passage
A. TCM night markets develop fast in the world.
B. There are different TCM night markets in China.
C. Yu Huiyan was first introduced to TCM in China.
D. TCM night markets are popular with young Chinese.
C
A new study suggests that doing high-intensity (高强度) yoga for under 30 minutes twice a week might be the top workout to get high-quality sleep. However, researchers warn that more experiments are needed to make sure the study’s results are true before people rush to try yoga.
It’s well-known that exercise helps improve sleep. On July 11, a meta-analysis was published in Sleep and Biological Rhythms. It compared different exercise routines and how they affect sleep quality. By looking at 30 experiments from around 12 countries, Chinese researchers from Harbin Sport University ranked the exercise methods. Yoga came first, followed by walking and other exercises.
Sleep disorders can be treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (认知行为疗法) or sleeping pills, but these don’t do the trick for everyone to deal with sleep disorders. Sleeping pills help in the short term but may have bad effects on the old. Exercise is another choice, but it’s hard to say which routine is best. Sleep problems like insomnia are common— about 16% of people worldwide have it. So, finding the best exercise for good sleep is pressing.
The meta-analysis found that shorter exercise time (under 30 minutes) is better for sleep. Longer exercise time (up to 60 minutes) was thought to help before, but it may raise cortisol (皮质醇) levels, keeping people awake. Also, when people take exercise matters a lot. Doing exercise early in the day may increase cortisol, but it won’t stay high when doing exercise in the evening.
Yet, high-intensity yoga may not suit everyone. The experiments included different age groups. For example, old people who don’t exercise much may benefit more from low-intensity exercise than young athletes. More studies are needed, especially to compare how men and women respond.
For now, experts advise people to choose exercise they can do. As Justin Thomas, a sleep specialist, said, if a patient can’t do yoga but can walk, walking is better than doing nothing.
8. What can we learn about high-intensity yoga according to paragraph 1
A. Doing it is good for the old. B. Doing it properly may help sleep well.
C. It is the best workout for fast sleeping. D. It suits the people with mental disorders.
9. Which can replace the underlined words “do the trick” in paragraph 3
A. Work. B. Wait. C. Appear. D. Respond.
10. What did the meta-analysis show
A. Increasing cortisol levels can help quality sleep.
B. Practising yoga too much affects daily performance.
C. The shorter the yoga time is, the better it is for sleep.
D. When to do yoga and the length of yoga time is important.
11. What advice do experts give people
A. Walk as long as possible. B. Base exercise on physical condition.
C. Follow their parents’ advice. D. Do high-intensity yoga every day.
D
Wearable technologies, such as smartwatches, monitor signals from the body, but typically only from a single spot. This can give an incomplete picture of how the body is functioning.
Now, Yoel Fink at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his team have developed a computer that can be stitched (缝) into clothes, made from chips that are connected in a thread (线) of copper and elastic fibre (弹性纤维). The thread has 256 kilobytes of on-board memory, as well as sensors that can check temperature, heart rate and body movements. It also has Bluetooth so that various threads can communicate. This means they can collectively gather location-specific data on the body, which could theoretically be used by an artificial intelligence to monitor a person’s health more accurately.
To make the individual threads, Fink and his team folded the chips into a 3D structure and connected them in a copper wire. They then wrapped the wire in a protective plastic casing, which was pulled into a thinner tube that can be covered in fabric.
To put them to the test, four fibres were stitched into the legs and arms of a person’s clothes. The researchers found they could identify different movements the person made.
The team is now testing clothes made with the thread computers in an Arctic expedition, as part of Operation NANOOK, an annual military exercise led by the Canadian Armed Forces. The clothes will record temperatures and data from different parts of the body, which Fink says could one day be useful for protecting people in extreme environments.
Not having to wire the sensors together makes the design much simpler than other electronic fabrics. The researchers also showed that the threads can be washed, but they only used water to do so. Their usage in daily life therefore needs to be proven before they are widely adopted, says Theo Hughes Riley at Nottingham Trent University, UK.
12. What is the problem of common wearable technologies
A Their high cost. B. Their short life of battery.
C. The single-spot monitoring. D. The poor ability to function.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A. The thread’s 3D structure. B. The thread’s memory load.
C. The cost of thread’s production. D. The way of making special threads.
14. What can we know about the clothes tested in an Arctic expedition
A. They help position ships in the Arctic.
B. They keep track of body heat and data.
C. They are popular in the Canadian Armed Forces.
D. They keep soldiers active in extreme environments.
15. What can be inferred about the thread computer from the last paragraph
A. It has a perfect design. B. It has been widely used in life.
C. It requires further testing. D. It’ll replace other wearable devices.

Sarah and I had been friends since we were little. Every day we went to school together and often had dinner. In class we sat together to discuss problems we didn’t understand. After exams, if one of us failed, the other would offer support and encouragement. Most importantly, we shared dreams, secrets, and a love for music. Sarah played the guitar with great passion, and I often spent afternoons listening to her practice. Our friendship was like a comforting melody (旋律) in our happy school life.
One day, our school announced a music competition. To our excitement, we both decided to sign up for it. I picked a challenging classical piece by Beethoven, while Sarah chose a traditional folk song that showed her guitar skills. We promised to support each other during the preparation and to be each other’s most honest listener and biggest supporter.
As time went by, we started spending more time practicing alone. I noticed Sarah becoming busier and busier, always rushing off after school without explanation. When I asked if she could listen to my practice, she often said, “Sorry, I can’t today. Maybe tomorrow ” As days turned into weeks, the repeated “tomorrows” planted a growing seed of doubt in my heart. Why did she refuse to listen to me or communicate with me Why didn’t she have time for me Was the competition turning us into rivals (对手)
One rainy afternoon, I saw her walking home with Michael, the best music student in our school. They were laughing happily, and he was carrying her guitar bag. I felt a sharp sense of betrayal (背叛). At that moment, I was sure she was getting secret help from him and had broken our promise. Hurt a lot, I didn’t know what had happened. For the next week, I was in low spirits. I thought nobody but Michael could tell me what happened to the friendship between Sarah and me and how we could restore it.

【答案】例文
One day, I had a chance to talk with Michael. I asked him why he and Sarah had been spending so much time together. He looked surprised and explained, “Sarah has been helping me with my English. In return, I gave her some guitar advice. She often talked about you and felt sorry that she couldn’t listen to your practice. She wanted to improve quickly so she could surprise you at the competition.” Hearing this, I realized how wrong I had been. Sarah hadn’t forgotten our promise — she was just trying her best. I decided to go and apologize to her soon.
That evening, I went to Sarah’s house, my heart beating wildly. When Sarah opened the door, I said sorry for doubting her and explained what Michael had told me. Sarah smiled and replied, “I miss you so much. I am afraid I will disappoint you if I don’t play well.” We hugged tightly. Our friendship became strong again and we began to prepare for the competition together. From this experience, I learned that trust is the most important part of friendship. When we truly believe in each other, no competition can break our bond.
