David Saroni, a name that is becoming increasingly synonymous with sustainable farming, is pioneering a movement towards environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices. As a dedicated farmer, Saroni is not just tending to his crops and livestock but also to the future of our planet.
At the core of Saroni’s philosophy lies a deep understanding of the impact of farming on the environment. Recognizing that traditional farming methods often lead to soil degradation, water depletion, and biodiversity loss, Saroni has taken a different path. He integrates principles of ecology and conservation into his farming routine, promoting practices that maintain the health of the land while producing high-quality, nutritious produce.
One of the most significant steps Saroni has taken is the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices. This approach goes beyond sustainability; it actively improves the ecosystem. By practicing crop rotation, maintaining cover crops, and utilizing compost (堆肥) and natural fertilizers, Saroni’s farm works in harmony with nature, aiding in carbon sequestration (封存) and soil fertility enhancement.
In an era where water scarcity is a growing concern, Saroni has put a spotlight on water conservation. Employing drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting techniques, he has managed to reduce water usage dramatically on his farm. These methods ensure that crops receive the precise amount of water they need, minimizing waste and preserving this precious resource.
A question that often arises is whether sustainable farming can be as productive as conventional methods. Saroni’s farm serves as a testament to the fact that sustainable practices can lead to both high yield and superior quality. Through soil care and natural pest management, Saroni has shown that it is possible to produce abundant, healthy crops without relying on harmful chemicals.
David Saroni’s commitment to sustainable development does not end at his farm gates. He is actively involved in educating the community about the benefits of sustainable agriculture. By hosting workshops, farm tours, and speaking at events, Saroni is spreading the word and inspiring others to follow in his footsteps, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future in farming.
4. What concerns David Saroni in terms of farming
A. Crops and livestock. B. Methods and practices.
C. Quality of the produce. D. Sustainability of farming.
5. What is the advantage of Saroni’s measure
A. Reducing chemical waste. B. Improving the ecosystem.
C. Maintaining certain crops. D. Enhancing carbon in soil.
6. What does the underlined word “yield” in paragraph 5 mean

C. Conservation. D. Development.
7. Which of the following can best describe David Saroni
A. Courageous and devoted.
B. Innovative and committed.
C. Educational and responsible.

If you walk into any modern office in China these days, you might spot a small, mysterious figure on someone’s desk: a Labubu toy. However, what seems like a fun little toy is more than a trend. It is actually a big cultural wave, connecting everyone from celebrities to ordinary families on social media. So, what does this trend tell us It shows us the power of a new group shaping China’s economy: young people.
Young adults are the main drivers of this trend. Their spending habits are changing the market. Young consumers from smaller cities contribute to nearly 60% of spending growth. Although they form a relatively small part of the population in big cities like Shanghai, their impact on overall consumption is overwhelmingly huge.
This generation, raised during China’s rapid economic growth and immersed in the internet from childhood, has a unique “digital DNA.” They value quality over price, seek experiences to express individuality, and possess both an international perspective and a confident cultural identity. They are big fans of “guochao”—trendy products inspired by Chinese culture. Meanwhile, the “She Economy”, powered by nearly 400 million young female consumers, is booming. The rise of single-person households, particularly among young urban professionals, also fuels spending on personal hobbies, dining, and travel.
To keep up, businesses are adapting. The car market sees young buyers favoring smart, internet-connected vehicles. Home appliances are becoming smarter and more personalized. Beyond physical goods, the emotional side of consumption is growing, with stress-relief services gaining popularity.
In China’s vast market, spotting a niche (小众的) trend can lead to explosive success. The next big wave is likely growing within the unique hobbies and cultures of young people today.
8. What does the phrase “more than a trend”(Line 2)imply about the rise of Labubu
A. It represents a widespread lifestyle accepted by the public.
B. It depends on continuous promotion through social media.
C. It has a deeper impact in cultural and economic dimensions.
D. It serves as a perfect marketing model for various industries.
9. What is true about young consumers from smaller cities
A. They have moved to big cities like Shanghai.
B. Their spending habits have no significant impact.
C. Their population size is larger than that in big cities.
D. They are the primary force behind consumption growth.
10. What is the common cause behind “guochao” and the “She Economy”
A. The intelligent upgrading of car and home appliance industries.
B. The unique values and lifestyles of young consumers in China.
C. The powerful promotion by social media platforms like Douyin.
D. The transition of traditional retail businesses to online operations.
11. What can be inferred about China’s future market from the text
A. Businesses will greatly succeed by producing more basic physical goods.
B. The market will see a decrease in personalized products like smart vehicles.
C. The key to great success lies in discovering an emerging and specialized trend.
D. Its growth will primarily rely on following a mass trend rather than niche one.
D
Alongside the crisps in the snack aisle, supermarkets are now stacking shelves with roasted chickpeas, cheese bites, and beef jerky. An array of high-protein alternatives is appearing alongside low-fat and low-sugar foods. Dairy sections are packed with hard-to-pronounce fare such as skyr and kefir. High-protein diets have become mainstream.
On social media, food and fitness influencers recommend protein. Celebrities have made it trendy to look strong, rather than skinny. A trend is close to an obsession. Google searches for “high-protein diet” reached their highest point ever in January. Some 64% of Americans want to increase the amount of protein they eat. In Britain, Ocado, an online supermarket, figures over 40% of consumers have increased their protein intake over the past year. So what explains the constant appetite
Gym enthusiasts have been wolfing down protein for decades. More recently the less strong have also realised that protein can help them build muscle while feeling fuller for longer. Juergen Esser at Danone, a French dairy giant, says hunger for protein first took off among youngsters who want to look muscular. It soon spread to older people eager to stay strong and healthy. The pandemic got people worrying about their health and increased demand.
High-protein products are helping firms expand. Revenues at Danone increased by 4.3% in 2024, driven by high-protein yoghurts and drinks. The question is whether the trend has gone too far. The World Health Organisation recommends 0.83 grams a day per kilogram of body weight. By that measure, the average American or Briton consumes too much.
For food firms already, struggling to meet multiple requirements, it is yet another challenge. Consumers do not only want more protein and less/ultra-processing, but also more plant-based food and anything good for the gut (肠道). The Curators, a British snackmaker, has a balancing act to perform. When the firm began making soya and lentil chips, it settled on ten grams of protein per bag. Recipes with more were not as tasty. And as food crazes come and go, a pleasant flavour may be the most enduring requirement of all.
12. What can we learn about high-protein diets
A. High-protein foods on supermarket shelves are always low in fat and sugar.
B. Their popularity was largely driven by social media and celebrity influence.
C. The majority of Google users are obsessed with adopting high-protein diets.
D. The consumption of high-protein diets in America is higher than that in Britain.
13. How does the author develop the idea in Paragraph 3
A. By presenting a series of statistical data.
B. By tracing the spread of the trend over time.
C. By analyzing the benefits through expert opinions.
D. By comparing the attitudes across different groups.
14. What is the main challenge food companies face in the high-protein market
A. Ensuring that high-protein products satisfy nutritional guidelines.
B. Reducing the costs of protein-rich products to remain competitive.
C. Balancing the dietary preferences and health concerns of consumers.
D. Convincing consumers that high-protein diets are universally healthy.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Fueling the Future: The Science Behind the Protein Obsession
B. Protein Revolution: Whether Modern Diets Have Gone Too Far
C. The Rise of Protein: How Demand Reshaped Consumer Behavior
D. from Gym to Shelves: A Growing Appetite for High-Protein Diets

Even as a child, I was always goal-directed. Every January 1st, I would dutifully sit down and write out my resolutions for the upcoming year: lose 50 pounds, run a marathon, have a picture-perfect home! Oh, and be the best parent ever who never yelled at my children! ____16____ By every March, I fall trapped in a cycle of ambition and guilt.
Everything changed when I faced consistent battles with breast and appendix cancer. That’s right: two different cancers, with two different treatment plans, at the same time, in the same body. ____17____ And I won’t lie -the next year was incredibly difficult.
Experiencing dual treatments taught me profound lessons. ____18____ Simply waking up cancer-free became my definition of triumph. Where I once measured success by completed checklists, I now found victory in my children’s laughter or sunlight filtering through hospital blinds.
I abandoned traditional resolutions by realizing that big goals invite big failures. Instead, I adopted a “mini-mission” approach. ____19____ For example, rather than aiming for daily gym marathons, I committed to 20-minute walks three times weekly.
The magic lies in accumulated progress. After mastering basic nutrition goals (five vegetable servings daily), I added hydration targets (replacing soda with herbal tea). This gradual method even helped me conquer the fearful rowing machine -a feat (壮举) I’d previously considered impossible.
____20____ My only “resolution” last year was avoiding medical deductibles (免赔额) through sustained small health habits. To my delight, it worked not through extreme measures, but through the snowball effect of mini-achievements.
A. It was a lot to deal with.
B. Immediate results often mask long-term costs
C Survival reshaped my understanding of success.
D. External pressures weaken self-improvement efforts.
E. Tiny achievable steps replaced monumental demands.
F. Piled accomplishments build sustainable transformation
G. In practical terms, my grand plans frequently backfire psychologically.

When David signed up for Ms. Sandra’s “Endangered Traditions” class at Willow High, he didn’t expect this class to be about saving history. Ms. Sandra, one of the few remaining masters of su filindeu, a handmade Italian pasta (意大利面), explained in the first class that this skill had been practiced for over 300 years and was the rarest of 350 pasta varieties worldwide. She emphasized, “Fewer than ten people in the world still master this skill. If we don’t act, the art will disappear.”
The students fell silent, realizing the importance of what they were learning. Then, with flour-dusted hands, Ms. Sandra shifted the mood. “Now, let me show you its magic.” The students leaned forward as she started the incredible transformation. She rolled the dough (面团) into a thick rope and then stretched it into 256 perfect strands (线). The classroom was filled with admiration as the teacher’s hands moved gracefully.
For weeks, David and his classmates threw themselves into learning the skill of making su filindeu with Ms. Sandra’s help, but it didn’t come easily. The dough kept breaking or sticking together. Sometimes, they couldn’t stretch more than 16 strands. Still, they refused to quit, helping and encouraging each other as they improved little by little.
One afternoon, Ms. Sandra entered the classroom with heavy steps. She sighed, “The school board thinks our su filindeu class isn’t practical. They’ve decided to cancel it next term unless we can prove its value.” She added, “It’s true that machines can mass-produce pasta in minutes, but if we only value what’s fast and easy, we lose centuries of knowledge.”
A wave of disappointment swept through the classroom. After a moment of silence, David stood up. “What if we let more people know about it How about an exhibition ” he suggested. The class lit up with excitement. Inspired by their reaction, David immediately volunteered to organize the exhibition. Ms. Sandra watched, proud and hopeful. Perhaps, she thought, they really could work some magic.

【答案】
David and his classmates quickly got to work. They spent days practicing the skill, determined to perfect it for the exhibition. David, who was in charge of organizing, contacted local media and invited community members. He knew that if they could show the beauty and history of su filindeu, people would appreciate it. On the day of the exhibition, the students demonstrated the process, explaining its significance. Many visitors were amazed by the skill, realizing that traditions like this should not be lost.
The day after the exhibition, Ms. Sandra entered the classroom with a smile. She announced that the school board had decided to keep the class after seeing the positive response from the exhibition. “You’ve shown everyone the value of preserving traditions,” she said proudly. David and his classmates cheered, feeling a sense of accomplishment. They knew that their hard work had made a difference and that they had played a part in saving a piece of history.
