Kenny Lake School in Copper Center, Alaska, is small. Jennifer Hodges is a third, fourth and fifth grade teacher. She says her three-grade class sits only at desks for 20 minutes a day. They do a lot of practical learning, such as raising Cho salmon (鲑鱼) from egg to Alevin to fry and then releasing them into a lake.
During the months when the salmon are in the classroom, students like to sit by the tank to observe. “When the eggs hatch, they have sacs that carry their food,” says Addy, a student. “That way they can hide still and don’t have to look for food. It’s funny because when they try to swim they just end up in circles.”
Students like to calculate when the salmon will turn from eggs to Alevin to fry based on the temperature of the tank. To them, it’s not practicing math problems: it’s predicting the future.
“We always take a guess at when they will hatch from their eggs first,” says Liam, a student. “It takes math because you have to keep track of their temperature and calculate. I’m good at math so I usually get it right.”
Since Hodges and her students live in such a rural area, there aren’t many field trips. But each year in May, she takes her students on the Salmon Field Trip, where they get to release the salmon they’ve raised in class.
They will name the fish, then release them into the wild and never see them again. But it’s not sad: it’s the highlight of the year.
“The best part is getting to release them after watching them hatch from eggs, grow into fry and take care of them,” says Fisher, a student. “You get to say goodbye.”
“I went to release them last year and the lake still was covered part way with ice,” says Styrling, a student. “I fell in. It was cold, but it was still funny.”
4. What can be inferred about Alevin according to the text

A. Students Had a Field Trip
B. A Busy and Successful Teacher
C. There Are More Ways to Learn
D. The Salmon in the Classroom

Governments have been trying to improve students’ academic performances. But the awkward truth is that the commonly promoted approaches — increasing salaries for teachers, building more schools and reducing class sizes — are costly and do little or nothing for learning.
However, there is a promising policy that comes from Malawi. This poor country has suffered from overcrowded classrooms, a lack of learning materials and a shortage of well-trained teachers. It’s not somewhere we might expect to find innovative solutions. Yet it is now adopting the so-called “technology-assisted learning” method that has shown hope in turning things around.
Almost all around the globe, schools put all nine-year-olds in one grade, ten-year-olds in another, and so on. But many of the children in each class are either far behind or far ahead. Kids in Malawi are now spending one hour a day on adaptive software on a tablet. It first identifies where each child is at, and then teaches reading, writing and math at the kid’s exact level.
Children have described the relief of not having to worry about being embarrassed about getting wrong answers in front of the class, or being forced to compete for time with their teachers. Researchers have been amazed by what the students have achieved. Extensive studies show that just one year of one hour each day can deliver an astonishing three years of normal learning. And the method is incredibly cheap, costing as little as $15 per pupil per year in Malawi, partly because using the tablet just one hour a day means it can be shared among many students.
The experiment in Malawi shows how the entire poorer half of the world could improve learning for nearly half a billion primary school children. This approach could also be useful in rich countries, with early evidence from trials in the UK looking promising.
As governments around the world are desperate for policies and approaches that could ensure that kids are better-equipped for the challenges of tomorrow, tablets to teach at each student’s own level may offer a powerful way forward.
8. What is the author’s attitude to the policy of increasing salaries for teachers
A. Dismissive. B. Favorable. C. Unclear. D. Unconcerned.
9. What has contributed the most to students’ performances in Malawi
A Small class size. B. Personalized study. C. Huge investment. D. Well-trained teachers.
10. What does the author probably mean in paragraph 5
A. It is wise for the UK to learn from the poor countries.
B. Wealthy and poor countries may face similar challenges.
C. He is surprised that poor countries can offer good solutions.
D. The technology-assisted learning method might be popularized.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. The Commonly Promoted Policies Do Very Little or Nothing for Learning.
B. Governments Are Struggling to Improve Students’ Academic Performances.
C. A Simple Innovation Has Made a Surprising Difference in Malawi’s Schools.
D. Malawi Sets a Good Example of Letting Students Study at Their Own Pace.
D
As genetic and biomarker tests become more common, so do new treatments that target specific tumor (肿瘤) types and may lead to better outcomes.
Patients with the same cancer type received a one-size-fits-all approach that didn’t work for many. “We used to treat just based on whether the tumor was bigger than a centimeter,” says Kimberly Allison, a surgical pathologist and breast cancer researcher at Stanford University School of Medicine. “The biology didn’t matter; you pretty much gave chemo-treatment (化疗) to everybody.”
The good news is that this has changed dramatically in the last few decades. Patients are no longer assessed and treated based only on the location and size of their cancer. Researchers now look for DNA changes and a range of other biological indicators. With this information, clinical teams can approach each case with more nuance, diagnosing and treating patients according to their personal physical conditions — and the specific characteristics of their cancer.
This has been achieved in large part through two distinct types of tests: genetic screening and biomarker testing. As researchers continue to home in on the underlying genetic factors of different cancers, the role of these tests in both diagnosis and treatment is only going to grow. The first of the two testing methods, genetic testing, helps to assess the cancer risk of healthy people and their family members. The technique goes through a person’s inherited DNA for gene variants known to increase the risk of developing cancer, or affect how the tumor might respond to treatment. For example, Hereditary BRCA1/2 mutations significantly increase breast cancer risk. The second testing method, biomarker testing, tends to happen once someone has already been diagnosed with cancer. Biomarkers are objective, measurable signs that can help clinicians understand how a cancer is progressing, or how it might respond to specific treatments.
While personalized treatment is now an option in many cancer types, data suggests there’s a long road ahead to make genetic and biomarker testing (e.g., germline genetic testing in <7% of cancer patients and key biomarkers assessed in <50% of non-small lung cancer cases) widely available, despite rising trends.
12. What problem does Kimberly Allison’s statement mainly illustrate
A. Patients with small tumors were often misdiagnosed.
B. Traditional approaches ignored the biological differences.
C. Doctors focused too much on the effects of chemotherapy.
D. Early treatments lacked advanced technologies for tumor detection.
13. What does the underlined word “nuance” in paragraph 3 most probably mean
A. Sympathy. B. Speed.
C. Differences. D. Tools.
14. What do we know about biomarker testing
A. It assesses cancer risk.
B. It monitors changes in cancer.
C. It applies standardized treatments.
D. It is more fact-based than genetic testing.
15. What is the passage most likely to discuss next
A. Strategies to increase testing rates.
B. Advancements in genetic testing technologies.
C. Impacts of low testing rates on patient outcomes.
D. Comparisons of testing rates across different cancer types.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My job in the hospital was to provide comfort to those nearing the end of their lives. The people I cared for became like family to me. One woman, Mrs. Wiggins, in particular, became a dear friend. Her children rarely visited, especially toward the end. At first, she seldom spoke, just lying still. But over time, we became close as I learned more about her.
She had three children, and her husband had passed away many years earlier. Her children were too busy to visit her, leaving her feeling very lonely. I tried to make her feel loved, as if the hospital were her home. She shared stories from her past until my shift (轮班) ended, often repeating them during my next shift.
One night, I took an early shift and went to sit beside her. She whispered that her time was near. I left to call her children so they could come quickly. When I returned to her room, she was sleeping. I leaned close to her and asked if she had dreamed of anything. She smiled gently and said she had dreamt of raspberries (覆盆子) and cream.
I must have looked surprised at such a strange answer. Mrs. Wiggins softly laughed and said she would explain. “When I was a little girl, my aunt would take me out for lunch and let me order anything I wanted. For dessert, we’d share a bowl of raspberries and cream. I loved the special taste—it was so smooth, rich, and pure. However, as I grew older and had my own children, I had to spend all my savings to support them. I couldn’t afford to spend money on something like raspberries and cream.”
She continued, “I just didn’t think I deserved it. But promise me you’ll fill your life with raspberries and cream!” Tears streamed down my face as I smiled and held her hand tightly. Then I gently kissed her on the cheek, my voice trembling as I begged her to hold on.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Iran as fast as I could to the nearest corner store and bought some raspberries and cream.

【答案】I ran as fast as I could to the nearest corner store and bought some raspberries and cream. When I returned to her room, she watched me with a smile as I prepared two bowls of raspberries and cream. We enjoyed the treat together until there was nothing left. And then I kissed her hand and held it tightly. On her face was a glow that showed no pain or fear. It was a bittersweet moment, for she knew that this simple pleasure had been denied to her for so long.
Her children came the next day to discuss the final arrangements. As they sat by her bedside, tears streamed down their faces. I shared the story of the raspberries and cream, revealing how much their mother had longed for that little delight. They listened closely, their faces showing a mix of regret and gratitude. A few days later, she passed away peacefully in her sleep. Just as Mrs. Wiggins wished, I promised to enjoy “raspberries and cream” in my life, cherishing every moment and making the most of my time with loved ones
