Ernest Owusu was 13 in 1980 when he was given the chance to appear in the audience of a BBC show, and ask Thatcher how she felt about being called the Iron Lady. This encounter re-appeared in a BBC’s program recently.
At the time of their meeting, Owusu was on free school meals, living on a public estate in Brixton, south London, where he and his sister were being raised by their mother Rose, a struggling hairdresser.
Now 57, Owusu looks remarkably similar even with a graying beard. But his life has been transformed. The father of three is a human resources director, and the first black captain of the Addington golf club in its 110-year history. As a black guy, it is about breaking the glass ceiling. Speaking in its clubhouse, Owusu describes his rise in social status as a “Thatcherite Journey”. And he says it began by asking the woman herself. “To this day it still has an impact. My confidence changed from that sliding-door moment. Something about her connected with me.”
Thatcher told Owusu she enjoyed being called the Iron Lady. “I think it’s rather a praise, don’t you ” she said, “Because so often people have said to me if you’re in your job you’ve got to be soft and warm and human, but you’ve got to have a touch of steel.” Owusu recalls the moment. “I just remember her eye contact. She was answering me, not the camera. She welcomed the question saying you’ve got to be tough in this world. And that stuck with me.”
After the show was broadcast, Owusu said he became “a little hero in Brixton for a good three months”. Owusu added, “It all gave me extra confidence. Doors might not have opened so quickly. It was one of those key moments to make you do things maybe you wouldn’t otherwise have done.”
24. What do we know about Owusu when he was 13
A. He met with Thatcher twice. B. He joined a famous golf club.
C. He hosted a BBC’s program. D. He lived at the bottom of society.
25. What do the underlined words “sliding-door moment” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Turning point. B. Social status.
C. Important decision. D. Remarkable achievement.
26. Based on the text, what made a big difference to Owusu
A. Others’ treating him equally at work.
B. Thatcher’s efforts to preserve his identity.
C. Others’ regarding him as a hero in Brixton.
D. Thatcher’s faith in the necessity of toughness.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. The Art of Dialogue B. The Power of Confidence
C. A Life-changing Meeting D. A Status-improving Story
C
Cuckoos (杜鹃) are a familiar and beloved species in the UK, whose arrival marks the beginning of summer. They make a long journey from their wintering grounds in Africa to raise its young on the British Isles. However, the cuckoo population in the UK is falling sharply. Since 1995, the number of breeding cuckoos has dropped by 35%. To understand why this is happening, researchers at the British Trust for ornithology (鸟类学) are now using high-tech equipment to find answers.
Researchers have been attaching satellite tags (标签) to cuckoos, which send out real-time location data. This data reveals how long cuckoos spend in the UK, when they leave, and which migration routes they take between the UK and Africa.
The hope is that this data will give scientists a detailed understanding of cuckoo migration, the threats they face along the way, and the conservation measures that could be adopted to improve their chances of survival.
The tags have already revealed many insights into cuckoo migration. It’s hoped that as data keeps coming in, scientists will better understand the factors that influence whether cuckoos survive their migration, and therefore the best ways to help protect the species.
It’s not just the scientists who have been eagerly tracking the tagged birds, though. The tags provide live location data which is published on an online map. Members of the public can therefore watch the cuckoos’ incredible journeys, too, and if you click on the individuals on the map, you can find out more about each bird.
“This ongoing project opens a significant window on the wonders of migration, and our discoveries are helping to shape the way we look at bird migration more widely,” says lead scientist on the project, Dr. Chris Hewson. “It will also lay a foundation from which cuckoo conservation measures can be planned, increasing the likelihood that the call of these birds will grace our summers for generations to come.”
28. What is the purpose of the British Trust for ornithology’s research
A. To find out why there are fewer and fewer cuckoos.
B. To find out what happened to cuckoos’ habitat.
C. To test out how to make an online map for Africa.
D. To test out how high-tech equipment can be used in the research.
29. How can the public be involved in the cuckoo tracking project according to the passage
A. By contributing funds to the research.
B. By following the live location data online.
C. By observing the birds in their natural habitat.
D. By participating in bird watching tours.
30. Which statement may Dr. Chris Hewson agree with about the project
A. It inspires the public’s passion for technology.
B. It shows the exact population of cuckoos in the UK.
C. It lays a foundation for the species’ conservation.
D. It will help cuckoos choose a safer migration route.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. Cuckoos’ Migration Routes B. Conservation Measures for Birds
C. Decline of New Species in the UK D. Tracking Cuckoos’ Journeys
D
Like many, you might have puzzled over contemporary art, such as a giant folk sculpture. In her book Get the Picture, journalist Bianca Bosker addresses the age-old question “What is art ” She goes to great lengths to find the answer, offering a participatory journey into the art world and revealing its spiritual rewards.
Bosker sets out to develop what art students call an “Eye”, the ability to separate the “good” art from the “bad”. To do this, she dives deep into the art community, working as a gallery assistant, art-fair seller, studio helper and museum security guard to examine art from different angles. She discovers that the art world often excludes those who can’t afford to go to art school or create passion projects. Practitioners (专业人员) often take on multiple jobs to make ends meet; many eventually quit from burnout. Yet, she also reveals the fundamental joy that art can bring to both creators and viewers.
Bosker’s exploration continues with neuroaesthetics (神经美学), the application of neuroscience to study the perception of art. Researchers have demonstrated that seeing is often secondary to believing—a “filter of expectation” in our brain twists the raw data stream of light that hits our eyes. This filter allows us to ignore certain visual details to rapidly process our disorderly environment. This is why we know a white vase next to the window is still white, even as natural light transforms its exact color to sunset golden or moonlight gray throughout the day.
One function of art, Bosker writes, is to remove this filter to re-examine the world with renewed wonder. Art has a therapeutic (治疗的) quality, a fact that’s seized upon by doctors who recommend patients visit art museums. Removing that filter can also help doctors themselves. Studies have shown that medical trainees who take an art-based course perform more integrative physical examinations and read human facial expressions better than those who don’t.
In the end, readers don’t get a complete answer to humankind’s strong desire for art. Bosker instead offers her own interpretation: Art is a way to find beauty and heighten our appreciation for life. In exposing the blind faith in the “Eye”, Bosker argues that art is everywhere and can be anything, as long as we’re open to letting what we see move us. By the last page, you’ll be forced to revisit that folk sculpture and see the artwork with fresh eyes.
32. How did Bosker gain her understanding of art
A. By pursuing a career in art. B. By fitting into the art circles.
C. By registering for art classes. D. By learning from practitioners.
33. What can be inferred about the “filter of expectation” in our brains
A. It enables us to see clearly in chaos. B. It shapes the idea of what beauty is.
C. It leads to a subjective view on things. D. It makes us more sensitive to colors.
34. What is a basis for art’s therapeutic quality
A. Art enriches people’s spiritual world. B. Art can bring changes in viewpoints.
C. Art has proved to be an effective cure. D. Art has been widely adopted by doctors.
35. What is Bosker’s attitude towards the faith in “Eye”
A. Challenging B. Approving C. Dismissive D. Objective

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tom had been getting ready for the school marathon for months. Every early morning, when the first sunlight fell on the campus, he’d already put on his running shoes and started running around the track. His breath made small white clouds in the cool air, and his legs sometimes hurt — a light sign that he trained too much, but he paid no attention to it.
One morning, when Tom slowed down to rest, his best friend Lily walked over with a bottle of water. “Don’t work too hard,” she said, looking worried. “Marathons need endurance (耐力), not just speed.” Tom took the water and smiled a little. “I know,” he answered, “but I want to win as my dad did.” His dad, who passed away, used to be a runner and won many races. He always told Tom to face challenges bravely.
Race day came at last. The campus was full of excitement — colorful flags blew in the wind, and students cheered loudly by the side. Tom stood at the starting line, his hands a bit sweaty. He took a deep breath, waiting for the starting gun.
When the gun went off, Tom ran as fast as he could. His legs moved quickly, and he soon got ahead of the other runners. The crowd cheered louder. For a moment, he felt like he could run forever — as if his dad were right next to him, cheering for him.
But halfway through, a sudden pain came to his right ankle (脚踝) — it was worse than the pain from training. He bit his teeth to keep going. He couldn’t stop, especially since he was leading. Up ahead, Lily was helping at the water station. She saw him limping (瘸着走) in pain and shouted, “Tom, stop and check your ankle!” But he just shook his head, and his face turned pale. When he got near the final kilometer, his ankle couldn’t stand it anymore — he tripped and fell to the ground, breathing heavily.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Lily rushed to Tom’s side immediately, her eyes filled with worry.
With the help of Lily and the other runners, Tom decided to walk to the finish line.

第四部分:写作
第一节
Dear Principal,
I am writing to express my thoughts regarding the suggestion of canceling the buffet lunch system at our school.
I do not agree with canceling it, as it provides students with variety and flexibility in choosing their meals, which is valuable for meeting different dietary needs and preferences. However, I acknowledge the issues of food waste and nutritional imbalance. To address these concerns, I suggest implementing educational sessions on balanced diets to guide students in making healthier food choices. Additionally, placing clear portion guidance signs can remind students to take only what they can consume. Monitoring and providing feedback on food waste can also raise awareness. These measures can help maintain the benefits of the buffet system while reducing its drawbacks.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

第二节
Lily rushed to Tom’s side immediately, her eyes filled with worry. She knelt beside him, gently pressing his swollen ankle while two other runners paused to help. “Let us carry you to the medic tent,” offered a tall boy, but Tom shook his head, staring at the finish line barely a kilometer away. Lily wiped sweat from his forehead and whispered, “Your dad wouldn’t want you to break yourself for this.” His father’s words echoed in his mind: “Bravery isn’t just about speed; it’s about heart.” Swallowing his frustration, he clenched his fists.
With the help of Lily and the other runners, Tom decided to walk to the finish line. Linking arms with Lily on one side and the tall runner on the other, he hobbled forward, his breath ragged but his spine straight. His vision blurred with pain and determination, but he smiled because this was his race, his way of honoring his dad. As they crossed the line together, the applause roared louder than any victory. Later, Lily teased, “Next time, listen to me sooner,” and Tom laughed, finally understanding endurance wasn’t just physical.
