At last year’s Paris Olympics, Xie Zhenye carried China’s hopes alone in the men’s 100 meters. On 13 September 2025, as the World Athletics Championships got started in Tokyo, he no longer stood alone at the starting line.
Alongside him was 21-year-old Deng Xinrui — a rising sprinter (短跑选手), and China’s first “post-2000” athlete to join the 100m at the worlds. Unlike many professional athletes, Deng chose a path that balanced study and training. From primary school to high school, he trained at school. By the end of 2021, he clocked 10.87s in the 100m; in September 2022, he entered Jinan University’s School of Physical Education as a freshman.
Before the 2023 season, few had heard of him. But that year, at the National Athletics Championships in Quzhou, Zhejiang province, he surprised the field by winning gold with a time of 10.23s. In just seven months, in his first season as a professional, he had lowered his personal best from 10.63s to 10.21s.
Deng’s rapid rise owed (归功于) much to his winter training before that season. In 2022, when he entered Jinan University, China’s sprinting star Mo Youxue trained alongside Deng as a support coach and training partner. Under Mo’s guidance, Deng broke through some technical bottlenecks. Progress came quickly — from breaking 10.50s to pushing past 10.30s.
Back in school, Deng changed his WeChat name to “1050” — a reminder of his first goal: to break 10.50s. In 2023, after achieving it, he set a new target — renaming himself “1025”, then “1010”. However, he kept “1010” for over two years — until August 2025, when he ran 10.06s. The very next day, he changed it again: “1005”.
4. How was Deng Xinrui different from many professional athletes
A. He broke many records. B. He had an outstanding talent.
C. He overcame many difficulties. D. He kept a balance between study and training.
5. When did the public get to know Deng

6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Deng had a lot of online fans. B. Deng kept challenging himself.
C. Deng was fond of social websites. D. Deng liked changing his WeChat name.
7. Which of the following word can best describe Deng
A. Warm-hearted. B. Honest. C. Determined. D. Outgoing.

A major international study has explored the effects of a four-day work week. Led by the organization 4 Day Week Global, the research covered over 245 companies and more than 8,700 workers in countries like the US, the UK, and Germany. The goal was to see if working one less day for the same pay could benefit both workers and companies.
The findings suggest that the new system of a four-day work week is a big success for everyone involved (参与). For workers, the results have been fantastic. Working fewer hours led to great improvements in general health and happiness. For example, 69% of workers reported feeling less burnout (精疲力竭), 42% experienced better mental health, and 37% saw improvements in their physical health. The change was so good that 13% of workers said they would not return to a traditional five-day schedule for any amount of money, highlighting their strong preference for the new system.
Perhaps more surprisingly, companies have also found great success with the new system. When asked to score the test period from one to ten, companies gave an impressive average score of 8.2. After a full year, more than 90% of the companies involved decided to make the four-day week permanent.
Companies reported excellent results in key business areas, including increased revenue (收入) and productivity, along with fewer workers being absent or quitting their jobs. This is achieved by working smarter, not longer. A common way is to reduce the number and length of meetings. Microsoft Japan, for example, saw a 40% productivity increase after limiting meetings.
Another benefit of the new system is to increase creativity, as workers have more time to think of new solutions. Others improve their work processes, making daily tasks more effective to save valuable time.
8. What is the goal of the international study led by 4 Day Week Global
A. To compare work hours of different countries.
B. To explore practical ways to increase workers’ pay.
C. To find out ways to improve workers’ health and happiness.
D To test if a four-day work week is good for companies and workers.
9. What’s the workers’ attitude toward the new system
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Worried.
10. What does the underlined word “permanent” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Changed. B. Continued. C. Limited. D. Wasted.
11. Which is a proper way of working smarter according to the study
A. Asking workers to work at home. B. Hiring more workers in key areas.
C. Increasing companies’ productivity. D. Cutting down meetings’ number and time.
D
English learners should not think that mistakes, or errors, are bad. One American language expert, Alex Poole, advises that language learners should instead see errors as signs of progress. Alex Poole is a professor of English and department head of modern languages at Western Kentucky University.
One common problem is that English learners think too much about errors instead of communication. “The goal is to be able to communicate in practical terms. If you have an error, the only time you should worry about it is if it causes communication failure,” Poole said.
Poole has some useful ideas about ways English learners can use errors. When you are speaking with a native English speaker, there are two kinds of things you can do to look for errors, Poole said. The first is to look for misunderstanding or other signs of confusion (困惑). For example, perhaps a person gives an unusual reaction to something you said. You can then ask him directly what the problem is. The second works if you know a native speaker well. You can ask him about the kinds of things you say that could cause communication problems with other native speakers.
When it comes to writing, Poole recommends, thinking about errors in a different way. He suggests keeping a list of common errors. These might include mistakes with subject-verb agreement, prepositions (介词) or articles. When English learners write something, Poole recommends that they think about the main ideas first. Then, he recommends thinking about how to put those ideas in order. Instead of thinking about grammar, he suggests you should think about the big picture of what you are writing about. After you write something, you can go back and use your list to look for errors.
12. When should English learners worry about a mistake according to Poole
A. When they write a letter. B. When they give a speech.
C. When they fail to communicate. D. When they talk with a native speaker.
13. How is paragraph 3 developed
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By telling stories. D. By making comparisons.
14. What should English learners consider first while writing in Poole’s opinion
A. Good order. B. Main ideas. C. Grammar rules. D. Common errors.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Correcting Grammar Errors with a List B. Writing Down Ideas without Any Error
C. Worrying about Communication Errors D. Looking on Errors in a Different Way

It was Saturday morning, and the library’s third floor was quiet, with sunlight going through tall windows onto smooth wooden tables. I was doing my math workbook when I noticed a black wallet, which was half-hidden under the next chair. Bending down, I picked it up. It was heavy, and when I opened it, there was some cash. I held my breath, this was exactly enough to buy a new notebook computer I’d been hoping to get for months.
“Found something ” Mia, my classmate who often studied here, leaned over, with her eyes widening. I quickly closed the wallet, with my heart racing. “Just a wallet… full of cash,” I said in a low voice. “That’s a lot. Maybe you should give it to Ms. Carter— the librarian ” said Mia. But my mind wandered (走神) to my old notebook computer that broke down every week. What if the owner was rich, and wouldn’t care the money
I was hesitating (犹豫) when a boy around our age hurried into, looking at the floor nervously.“Excuse me, have you seen a black wallet ” he asked, with his voice trembling (颤抖). “My mom’s in the hospital— this money is for her medicine. I can’t lose it.” The boy said in a hopeless voice. Hearing his words, my heart went heavy. The wallet felt burning hot in my hand.

(1)续写词数应为120个左右;

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11.

【答案】
I stood up slowly and walked to the boy. My hands were trembling as I held out the wallet. “Is this yours ” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. His eyes lit up with relief, and he nodded eagerly. “Thank you so much! I was so worried — this wallet contains money for my mom’s urgent treatment,” he said, clutching it tightly to his chest. A warm glow spread through me, knowing I’d done the right thing. Mia, who had been watching, smiled at me, and in that moment, I realized that honesty brought a satisfaction far greater than any new computer ever could.
Weeks later, I focused on my math workbook at my usual table when a voice made me look up. It was the boy from before, holding a small gift bag. “I wanted to thank you properly,” he said, handing it to me. Inside was a heartfelt handwritten note and a simple but functional laptop. “It’s not new, but it works well,” he explained. Tears welled up in my eyes — sometimes, the kindness we give truly comes full circle.
