The opera of Dream of the Red Chamber(《红楼梦》), the first opera adapted from an 18th century Chinese novel under the same name, returned to San Francisco in mid-June, 2022, six years after its world debut(首演). The opera, developed for the Western audience, has received international praise since its first performance.
Zhang Meigui, a 28-year-old opera singer, played the role of Daiyu in the opera. To show the audience a fresh version(版本), she had been preparing for half a year. “I’ve watched the video of the first production many times. I think the performance of the singer (playing Daiyu) is excellent, which is very challenging and requires a lot of skills,” she said. “For example, Daiyu finds her world more and more helpless as her health continues to worsen. She sings, ‘When spring is gone and beauty is spent, who cares for the dying flowers ’”
“The singer needs to keep the high notes(高音) with a soft sound, which requires more breath support and air control,” said Zhang, “Some parts of the music are more powerful and require very expressive sound.”
Bright Sheng, the opera’s composer, explained in an interview why Daiyu sang in a loud voice. “Music carries feelings that words cannot explain or say. To me, it has to be loud crying, beating her chest as she looks up at the sky to ask these questions.” For the new production, Sheng said he made some changes. He said, “A great opera is not only a big musical theatre in action, but also a perfect mixture of music and drama.”
“There’s no boundary in the world of music. It can connect people with different backgrounds. I hope American people will be touched by this opera and experience the beauty of Chinese culture,” Zhang added.
44.When was the opera first performed in San Francisco
A.In the 18th century. B.In 1987. C.In 2016. D.In 2022.

A.By reading the original work. B.By creating new singing skills.
C.By communicating with the composer.
D.By learning from the performer of the old version.
46.What did Sheng do in the interview
A.He interviewed the actress. B.He introduced the novel.
C.He explained why the performer sang loud. D.He praised the new production highly.

When I was a teenager, my parents were never interested in the music I liked. They said it sounded like “a lot of noise”. At the same time, my father regularly described the music that he liked as “beautiful”.
As it turns out, my father is not alone. As I’ve grown older, I’ve often heard people of my age say, “Today’s music is terrible.” Why do many old people just dislike new music
The mere exposure effect may explain this. It means the more familiar we are with something, the more likely we are to prefer it. When we are in our early teens, we usually spend a lot of time listening to music and discussing it with our friends. The songs and artists that are popular during this time become familiar to us. After we turn 30 years old, working and raising a family take up most of our time. Instead of discovering new music, we listen to old favourites that connect us to a simpler time. Studies show that by the time they turn 33 years old, most people have completely stopped exploring new music.
But I think there is another explanation for why older people don’t like new music. Most popular music after all, is not written for them. It is made for young people. Punk, rap, hip-hop, heavy metal, and many other types of music began as youthful rebellions(叛逆) against out-of-date ways of doing things. They naturally attract younger audiences.
Do your parents hate the music you like, too Now, after reading this article, you know that there is nothing wrong with that.
47.When the writer was a teenager, his parents described the music he liked as .
A.beautiful B.noisy C.common D.out-of-date
48.Which of the following charts correctly shows “the mere exposure effect” (Preference偏爱, Level of familiarity熟悉度)
A. B. C. D.
49.Punk and heavy metal are two different according to the article.
A.kinds of young people B.forms of materials
C.types of music D.ways of doing things
50.According to the article, many old people dislike new music because .
①new music is too terrible to listen to
②old people want to be different from young people
③new music is not specially written for old people
④old people have formed their own musical tastes
A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.①④

It was half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone, not bad,” he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls’ heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.
“Perfect,” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste ad.”
As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups have paid off.
But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six-footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet! Six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.
Why didn’t his legs grow with the rest of his body He was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family, and he was even shorter than his “little” sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from
He certainly didn’t get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother’s side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle.
Thanks a lot, Grandpa!
Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay’s short legs and they had a nickname(外号) for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn’t like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.
But Jay couldn’t see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team and, like a rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.
Jay shook his head. “Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby legs. Yeah, that’s me,” he said to himself with a little smile. Suddenly, he heard his mother’s voice.
“Jay! It’s breakfast time!”

五、阅读并回答问题。(每小题2分,共10分)
A person who writes music is known as a composer. A composer thinks of a musical idea and writes it on paper for others to read. Instead of writing words, a composer uses musical notation(记号). Other people can read the notes and play them. When they do, they’re playing music that came from the composer’s imagination.
Beethoven was a famous German composer. He was born in 1770 in Bonn and began learning the piano when he was only four. He also learned to play the violin. Beethoven visited Vienna, which was a very musical city, in 1787.Two other famous composers lived in Vienna at that time. Wolfgang Mozart and Joseph Haydn met Beethoven and gave his music high praise. Beethoven made friends in Vienna and returned there in 1792.He studied music with Haydn and lived in Vienna for the rest of his life.
Beethoven was known as a great pianist, but he wanted to compose his own music. He always seemed to have musical ideas in his head. His notebooks show how hard he worked to get the music just right. He often wrote and then revised his music by scratching it out(勾划), so it is possible for us to see how he was thinking about the music.
During the late 1790s, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. At first it was difficult for him to hear people and talk with them. Even when he became completely deaf, he did not stop creating music. He heard music in his mind even though he couldn’t hear it with his ears.
Most people have heard of Beethoven’s Symphony(交响乐) No.5, but they may not know he wrote it when he was growing deaf. A symphony is a long piece of music for an orchestra(交响乐团). Symphony No.5 starts like this: ta-ta-ta-TUM. Beethoven used this pattern over and over again in his symphony. Try saying it aloud two times: ta-ta-ta-TUM, ta-ta-ta-TUM.
