For children with disabilities, surfing feels like an impossible dream.But Ride a Wave(RAW), a nonprofit(非营利的) organization, has turned this dream into reality.
Founded in 1995 by Danny Cortazzo, RAW hosts eight-day camps from April through June in
the California Bay Area each year. And over300 volunteers(志愿者) across the country— including
firefighters,doctors and scientists—come to give a hand.
At Cowells Beach, every child with special needs gets a wetsuit(潜水服), a life jacket and a
helmet(头盔). They ride on special surfboards with a front seat. A volunteer carefully controls(控制) each board, making sure the kid has much fun safely.
Besides surfing, these children can enjoy boogie boarding, kayaking and tandem surfing. Being
in the water helps them build up their confidence while making new friends. Mariah Vash, born with a speech disorder, has taken part in the RAW camp six times. “The volunteers here always try to
understand Mariah. That really makes her day!”said her father, Stuart Vash.
So far, the organization has helped over 2,500 kids from America,Canada, Italy and France.
These kids get a life-changing experience at the beach. “It's encouraging to see the children grow,
and to know we've played a part in that.” said 37-year-old Alisa Weber, who started volunteering at RAW when she was 13.
