20-year-old Edgar McGregor decided to visit his local park, Eaton Canyon, day in and day out to pick up as much litter as he could fit in two buckets (提桶). Now, over 589 days and 19,000 Twitter followers later, he is more passionate than ever about his task to save the planet!
Edgar found out that Los Angeles would be the host of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. Knowing the state of the national forest at the time, he feared that its grounds that were full of litter would make the city a “global embarrassment”, so he decided to make cleaning it up his new passion project.
As time went on, he began documenting his progress on Twitter. Soon, he began encouraging others to start park cleanup projects of their own.
As part of southern California’s Angeles National Forest, Eaton Canyon can see quite a bit of daily foot traffic. On one particularly busy day, Edgar spent five hours picking up litter and came away with over 1,000 pounds of rubbish. Rain or shine, Edgar headed over to carry out his task. He worked through conditions like snowstorms, a record heat wave, and even a forest fire on the opposite side of the park.
The more he did, the more treasures he discovered. In addition to a lot of old iPhones and cans, Edgar collected enough recyclables to earn around 30 dollars every few weeks, which he would donate to nonprofits.
Recently, Edgar began noticing that the top-littered areas in his park were becoming few and far between. At one point, he spent four hours moving around the park and only returned with two buckets. Edgar plans to return to Eaton Canyon two or three times a week to keep up with the maintenance, but he is excited to start expanding his reach to new locations. Though he realizes this doesn’t mean his journey is complete, he is excited to have already achieved so much!

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. While it may sound like good advice, it’s not the best or fastest path because practice can only get you so far, says Scott Young, author of Get Better at Anything: 12 Maxims for Mastery.
“Practice is not a cure- all.” Young explains. “It doesn’t necessarily improve your skills but rather makes them more automatic and fluent.” In his book, Young clarifies this concept with the game Tetris where players fit falling blocks to complete lines. The more you practice the faster and more accurate you become at placing the blocks. However, simply practicing doesn’t guarantee higher scores. To reach higher proficiency (精通度), one must go beyond repetitive practice and use the correct techniques.
Young said, “It’s important to do the correct technique from the beginning. That’s why piano teachers and tennis coaches prefer to train someone who has had no experience rather than someone who has had a lot of experience. By starting with the correct techniques, beginners can grasp skills more quickly. Without established habits to break, they are more likely to build a strong base for long- term improvement.”
Malcolm Gladwell popularized the 10,000- hour rule in his book Outliers: The Story of Success, suggesting that proficiency in any field requires about 10,000 hours of practice. Yet Anders Ericsson, whose research was a big inspiration for this concept, disagreed. He argued for the idea of deliberate practice, which was not just practice but practice under the guidance with immediate feedback (反馈) about your performance. He stressed that learning from outcomes through corrective feedback is essential for developing true proficiency, otherwise you just spend time getting fluency and confidence.
Getting high- quality feedback will depend on how you ask for it. Simply asking someone “What do you think ” is not enough. “There’s just no way in our social network that someone could give you really honest feedback and not cause harm to the relationship,” Young says. Instead, he suggests asking, “It you were going to make this better, what would you do ” By asking how to improve it, we shift the focus from judgment to practical steps for addressing any concerns.
28. What idea does Scott Young put forward in his book
A. High scores need consistent practice. B. Practice may not ensure excellence.
C. Right skills don’t guarantee success. D. Fluency comes from regular practice.
29. Why did Young mention piano teachers and tennis coaches in paragraph 3
A. To introduce a new idea. B. To make a comparison.
C. To confirm(证实) a guess. D. To illustrate(说明)a point.
30. What does Anders Ericsson advocate
A. Getting confident from positive feedback . B. Increasing the frequency of practice.
C. Enhancing the fluency of performance. D.Practicing under effective guidance .
31. What is a better way to ask for feedback in Young’s opinion
A. Turning to strangers for help. B. Not expecting honest response.
C. Asking for ways of improving. D. Preparing for any judgment.
D
Scientists at the University of Surrey have made a breakthrough in batteries(电池) that not only store more energy but help tackle greenhouse gas emissions. Lithium-CO2 “breathing” batteries release power while capturing carbon dioxide, offering a better alternative that may one day outperform today’s lithium-ion batteries.
Until now, Lithium-CO2 batteries have faced setbacks in efficiency-wearing out quickly and relying on expensive rare materials. However, researchers from Surrey have found a way to overcome these issues by using a low-cost catalyst (催化剂) called CPM. Using computer modelling and lab experiments, tests showed this simple change allowed the battery to store considerably more energy, charge with far less power and run for over 100 cycles.
Dr Gadkari, co-author of the study, said, “One of the biggest challenges with these batteries is something called ‘overpotential’ - the extra energy needed to get the reaction going. You can think of it like cycling uphill before you can coast. CPM flattens that hill, meaning the battery loses far less energy during each charge and discharge.”
To understand why the CPM worked so well, researchers used two approaches. First, they took apart the battery after charging and discharging to study the chemical changes inside, finding that lithium carbonate, the chemical substances formed when the battery absorbs CO2, could be reliably built up and removed-an essential feature for long-term use. They then turned to computer modelling using density functional theory (DFT) to explore how the reactions unfold on the material surface. Results showed how the CPM’s stable, holey structure offered the ideal surface for key chemical reactions.
“What’s exciting about this discovery is that it combines strong performance with simplicity. We’ve shown it’s possible to build efficient lithium-CO2 batteries in large numbers using affordable, expandable materials no rare metals required,” said Dr Gadkari. If commercialised, these batteries could help cut emissions from vehicles and industrial sources. Scientists even imagine they could operate on Mars, where the atmosphere is 95% CO2. The discovery opens new doors for developing even better low-cost, easy-to-make battery materials and marks a milestone step toward real-world applications.
32. What advantage does the new battery have over other batteries based on the first paragraph
A. It’s greener. B. It’s more user-friendly. C. It’s lighter. D. It’s more cost-effective.
33. What does Dr Gadkari want to clarify by referring to “cycling uphill”
A. A natural phenomenon. B. An experimental stage.
C. A technical term. D. A theoretical design.
34. How did researchers confirm the effectiveness of CPM besides using modelling
A. By testing its performance on Mars. B. By observing reactions in the battery.
C. By analyzing lithium carbonate’ structure. D. By assessing its durability via DFT.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph about the new battery
A. Its efficiency relies on rare earth elements.
B. It is convenient to make and recycle
C. It is promising for mass production.
D. Its use has reshaped the battery industry.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was early autumn when the school organized a weekend camping trip to a nearby mountain forest. The air was crisp, the leaves were turning golden, and the students were buzzing with excitement. After weeks of studying and exams, everyone welcomed the chance to enjoy nature and relax outdoors.
Among the students were four close friends: Leo, Eric, Jason, and Alice. Though their personalities were quite different, they made a great team. Alice, the only girl in the group, was smart and well-prepared. She had brought along a compass, a map, and even a first-aid kit.
After arriving at the campsite, the students pitched their tents, gathered firewood, and helped prepare a simple meal. The campsite was surrounded by tall pine trees and in the distance, a mountain stream could be heard. The teachers reminded everyone to stay within the marked area and never go far alone.
After lunch, the students were allowed to explore in small groups. Leo's group decided to follow a trail leading up a hill. According to Alice, there was a small lookout point that offered a beautiful view of the valley.
As they walked, Jason kept running ahead, calling the others to hurry. "Let's see what's up there!" he shouted. Alice followed closely behind, holding the map. Leo walked at a steady pace, checking that no one fell behind. Eric lagged at the end, clearly nervous about being so deep in the forest.
The path became narrower as they climbed. Birds chirped in the trees, and dry leaves crunched under their shoes. The sunlight filtered through the branches above, casting dancing shadows on the ground. After about an hour, they reached the edge of a rocky area covered in leaves. The trail began to twist more than expected, and many landmarks they passed didn't match what was on the map.
"I think the viewpoint is just beyond this slope (斜坡)," Jason said, pointing excitedly.
Leo looked uncertain. "Let's be careful. It looks slippery."
But before anyone could stop him, Jason had already climbed ahead.

续写: Just as he reached the top of the slope, his foot slipped. He lost balance and tumbled down with a cry. The others rushed forward and found him lying on the ground, holding his ankle. Leo quickly knelt beside him and checked the injury. It was already starting to swell. Alice pulled out her first aid kit and wrapped the ankle firmly with a bandage. "Your ankle’s sprained. It doesn’t seem broken, but you really shouldn’t walk on it," she said gently. Eric was watching all of this nervously. "Don't worry," Leo said, offering a reassuring smile. "Everything will be fine!"
With the first aid finished, they realized a new challenge: how to get back. They had to find the way back. The trees all looked the same, and the map no longer matched the surroundings. Alice studied the compass and listened carefully. “I can hear a stream,” she said. “If we follow it downhill, we might rejoin the main trail.” With Leo supporting Jason and Eric carrying the bag, they moved slowly. After about half an hour, the trees opened up—they saw tents in the distance. Back at camp, the teachers, who had been concerned about their safety, praised their calmness and teamwork. The event taught them that true adventure lies not only in the journey but in how they face the unexpected together.

【原文】Mr. Perkins stood at the bus stop and watched the cars go by. Many of the cars were new Beta 400s, and most of them were yellow. Mr. Perkins always wore the same clothes as other men, ate the same food as other people, and did the same things after work and at the end of the week Mr. Perkins did not like to be different. The following week, Mr. Perkins bought a new, bright yellow Beta 400s. He was satisfied with it, and drove to work in it the very next day. He was even more satisfied with his new car when he saw all the other Beta 400s in front, behind, and on both sides of him.
