New Year's Eve is a time for people to buy presents for friends or relatives. It marks the start of the new year and it is the busiest season for the shops and stores.Stores crowd with holiday gift buyers. But some people celebrate the New Year in other ways. For example, they volunteer to serve meals for the homeless or visit old people in nursing homes. To them, this is the right time to help others.
As New Year is coming, students at Jefferson Middle School are busy wrapping(包裹)gifts.
"I have a new order,"a student calls out to her classmates from the front door.Other students jump into action.
"The Wrapping Service is part of the school's RISE program.Students in the program learn life skills and vocational(职业的)skills."their teacher Jenny told the local newspaper reporter.
Before New Year's Eve,the students at Jefferson Middle School had a class meeting.Howard talked with the students about how they could give back to the community. At last, they decided to do a real fundraiser(筹款活动).They could do some work and raise money for Love Coffee because some disabled(残疾的)people are working in this coffee shop.Students could wrap gifts, handle orders at the front desk, answer phones and do all kinds of work there.
Nathan carefully cut the paper with scissors(剪刀).He is good at wrapping gifts."I like to be organized at home,"Nathan said."I wrapped presents a lot."
Olive Werth,l2,said she liked working with people at the front desk."I check people in,"Olive said."I give them gift tags.Sometimes I send emails for pickup."
"The students have been busy,"Howard said."In the last two days,we've wrapped over 70 gifts and raised over 100 for Love Coffee. The students do the project during the school day to learn what a job is like.
"There's nothing better than learning to run a business, and I really like this project,"said Nathan.

As we know, diseases such as colds or flu can move from one person to another. But do you know that feelings, like being stressed(压力),can be passed on too?Sometimes we feel very busy and stressed not only because of our own work but also because of the feelings and problems of people we are close to.
The psychologist Stephanie Preston from the University of Michigan led his team to design a study. They wanted to check if stress was passed on.In the study, people were asked to give a speech to a group of watchers. Those watchers didn't show any feelings during the speech. That made the speakers even more stressed than if they got bad comments(评价).After a while, even the researchers started feeling stressed from just watching the speeches. This made them curious,so they decided to study more. They looked at spit samples(唾液样本) to see the stress hormone—cortisol(皮质醇激素).While speakers were stressed and had a lot of cortisol, watchers were stressed too and had a lot of cortisol as well. They named this effect(效果) "physiological resonance".It means the speakers' stress was passed on to the watchers.
Though they prove that stress can move from one person to another, there is still one question.Studies have looked into the speakers' voices and faces, but they haven't figured out how someone's behavior causes another's stress.
When we talk or hang out with other people,we notice different signs showing their feelings. Those help us know if there's something wrong around us.If our neighbor seems stressed,we should watch out as it might affect(影响) us too. This ability to sense stress comes from our long history of living in groups. It is not just humans who do this;animals can also tell when others around them are stressed. For example,if a deer senses stress in its pack,it may run away to avoid(避免) danger. So quickly spotting(发现) stress in others can help us.It keeps us away from problems before they get worse.
24.How did Preston's team find that stress could move from one person to another? ______

Living and dealing with kids can be a difficult job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even more difficult. If I have learned anything in my 16 years,it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let the other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents,or anyone else, not talking to them doesn't solve anything.
Communication brings with the concerns (关心) of another. It means that you can't just come home from school,go up to your room and take no notice to anyone.Even if you just say "Hi",and see how their day was for five minutes,it is better than nothing. If you look up the word "communication" in a dictionary,it will say "expressing ideas and feelings or giving people information:a letter or a message".
To keep a good relationship with your parents, you must keep communication strong.Let them know how you feel, even if it's just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it,tell them that you'll listen to what they have to say,and ask them politely to listen to you.Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example:one night,Sophie went to a street party with her friends.
She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn't feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them.Needless to say,she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren't as mad and let it munication is the key here.If Sophie's parents had not been willing to listen,Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.
Communication isn't a one-way matter;it goes both ways.
Just remember:if you get into a situation like Sophie's,telling the other person how you feel—listening is the key to communication.

D. Communication helps us build a good relationship with our parents.
30.The writer uses Sophie's example to show that ______ .
