Four Things About the Spring Equinox (春分)
The traditional Chinese solar calendar divides a year into 24 solar terms. The Spring Equinox is the fourth term of the year. This term signals the equal length of the day and the night time. Many people hold various activities to celebrate the festival. Here are several things you may not know about it.
Kite Flying
In ancient times, people did not have good medical resources. So they wrote their health problems on paper kites. When a paper kite was in the air, people would cut off the string to let it fly away, meaning the disease would go away. Later flying kites developed into a popular game in spring.
Three Hous
The ancient Chinese people divided the fifteen days of the Spring Equinox into three hous or five day parts. As the old saying goes, “Swallows fly back to the North in the first hou; thunder cracks the sky in the second hou; lightning occurs frequently in the third hou, which shows the climate feature during the term.”
Spring Vegetables
It is a commonly practised custom to eat spring vegetables in many regions of China. Spring vegetables refer to the seasonal vegetables that differ from place to place. The ancient teachings in a Chinese classic suggest people eat the seasonal food, especially vegetables, to help preserve health and bring good luck.
Egg-standing Games
Standing an egg upright (直立的) is a popular game across the country during the Spring Equinox. It is an old custom that can date back to thousands of years ago. People practise this tradition to celebrate the coming of spring. It is said that if someone can make the egg stand he will have good luck in the future.

Henry is a doctor at a famous hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. His mom, Dr. Sophia, 56, has been practicing medicine for the last 32 years and joined the same hospital as a professor last August.
In May, the talented pair teamed up for operation, an unexpected opportunity Henry stepped up for. Even though the case was new to him, Henry jumped at the chance. When the day came, Sophia was pleased to have Henry by her side. Henry said it was a memorable experience. The patient has done well since the operation and was even excited that the mother-son team would be taking care of her.
“When Henry was 7, I began showing him books about medicine instead of reading story-books to him at times. He was really curious about the books and looked through them carefully. The first case that he saw was me working on a heart operation when he was 11. And instead of being some nervous kid standing behind the screen there, he was actually pretty quiet. And I could tell from speaking with him afterwards that he’d really been closely observing it. After that, I regularly chatted with him about medical cases,” Sophia said.
Henry said that the experience was one that would stick with him for good. “Seeing that as an 11-year-old was also just pretty wild,” he said. “It was really cool to see that my mom was the one who pieced the whole team together. Since then, I have always admired my mom’s professional skills and referred to her as my role model.”
Henry is aiming to dig into medical research next year. “Our paths have crossed at this point, and there is still a lot more to go,” Henry said. At the same time, Sophia added, “What can be better I taught this kid how to ride a bicycle many years ago. Now, to get to teach him how to operate on a human heart is pretty mind-blowing.”
24.How was the surgery cooperation between Sophia and Henry
A.Simple. B.Successful. C.Advanced. D.Insignificant.
25.What message can we get from the third paragraph
A.Henry’s interest in medicine started at an early age.
B.Henry was alarmed when seeing his mom operating.
C.Sophia failed to maintain a close relationship with Henry.
D.Sophia’s tight schedule stopped her from tending Henry.
26.What do Henry’s words in Paragraph 4 imply
A.He found his mom’s work challenging.
B. His learning experience was enjoyable.
C.He is as professional as his mom in medicine.
D.His mom mattered a lot in his career choice.
27.In which section of a website may we read the text
A.Science and society. B.Medicine and health.
C.Family and education. D.Culture and lifestyle.

If you can, stop what you’re doing, and breathe in through your nose. What do you smell Well, if you’re lucky, it’s morning coffee. But for a lot of us, the answer might not be all that much. Researchers say many people are deprived of smells and that we’ve come to expect a flavourless world. However, a new study suggests our learning and memory might be well served if we were exposed to more smells as we age.
Michael Leon is a neurobiologist. He’s a professor at the University of California. As an experiment, he gave a few dozen healthy, older adults diffusers, machines that release smells in a room, and also different essential oils to go in them. Each night, a different smell — rose, orange, lemon, and lavender — would fill the bedroom.
Over the course of six months, there was a 226% improvement on a learning and memory test among testees who slept with a strong smell compared with those who diffused distilled (蒸馏) water every night. Leon said the smells were stimulating the memory centers of people’s brains as they slept. Now, the study was small, just 43 people. “Still,” Leon said, “it is consistent with the understanding of how smell is connected to learning and memory.”
Most people living in modern society actually lack the smell stimulation that their brains need. This living in a smell-free world, combined with the wear and tear that comes with aging, means that around the time people turn 60, their sense of smell and memory start declining together. Leon’s study tries to stimulate the brain with as many smells as possible.
The idea is that it will keep the memory centers of your brain in good condition throughout life and perhaps prevent memory loss older in life. Leon said that while the study is not yet very comprehensive and has a long way to go, he thinks there’s enough evidence for people to try it at home. “Almost everyone can get more smells into their lives,” he added.
28.Which is closest in meaning to “are deprived of” in paragraph 1
A.Are taken away from. B.Are thirsty for.
C.Are particular about. D.Are familiar with.
29.What can we know from Leon’s study
A.Sleep is strongly associated with memory functions.
B.Smells can help stimulate people’s ability to learn.
C.Water may activate the brain’s memory-related areas.
D.Memory decline often begins before age 60.
30.What is Leon’s attitude towards his finding
A.Critical. B.Unclear. C.Subjective. D.Positive.
31.Where is the text most probably taken from
A.The instructions for a medical device.
B.An essay on a popular science website.
C.A report on the influential factors of memory.
D.A study on the smells for a better sleep.

Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in surgery (外科手术)
Scientists have designed this small, “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. It’s 2 centimeters long, weighs less than 0.97 grams and can travel at a speed of 6 centimeters per second. It’s the smaller, faster replacement to CLARI, which was designed by the same team.
“Because of the robot’s small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four important areas,” the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster (灾害) response , check on high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment.
“In the long term, we hope such robots will be used more widely in moving through human bodies and performing surgeries that can’t be easily done at present,” Jayaram said. With mCLARI, Jayaram’s team is moving closer to creating robots that can fit in different environments—just like the insects they’re inspired by.
The mCLARI robot has four legs and can move in narrow spaces by changing between running forward and side-to-side and can use different speeds in human bodies. Its legs are joined to its body through joints (关节), which enables mCLARI to change its body shape based on the environment it is in. For example, its legs can be lengthened up to 50% in certain spaces.
As follow-up work, the scientists want to give mCLARI more power and sensing ability while helping the surgeries. “We are also excited about understanding the effect of shape change on improving functions of robots,” Jayaram said. “And this is sure a great one-step forward of the technology. The robot will have entered the market by 2025 and will bring greater benefits to mankind, especially in medical treatment.”
32.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Possible application fields of the robot. B.Different types of the robot.
C.Several important features of the robot. D.Working process of the robot.
33.Which of the following can best describe mCLARI
A.Valuable but uncontrollable. B.Modern but high-cost.
C.Heavy and time-consuming. D.Advanced and effective.
34.What is Jayaram’s attitude towards the robot
A.Worried. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Uninterested.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence
B.mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market
C.CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects
D.A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries

根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Once my mother told me a story. In Africa, when an antelope wakes up every morning, the first thing it thinks about is, “I must be able to run faster than the fastest lion, or I will be killed.” 36 The first thing the lion thinks about is, “I must be able to catch the slowest antelope, or I will starve to death.” So, almost at the same time, they get up and start running toward the rising sun.
This is life: full of chances and challenges. 37 For students, it is just the same. If we do not study hard, sooner or later, we will fall behind the other students. At first, I did not know what the word “exam” meant. Later, I knew an exam was a kind of competition. In competitions, there are always winners and losers. As I grew up, I got to know competition well. 38
Each time I saw children playing games, and heard their laughter, I wished I were that age again. 39 So I picked up my pen and began to study hard again.
I was still not sure what competition really meant. One day, I was taking part in an English-speaking competition. When I went to the stage, I saw other students looking at me kindly. 40 It is not as cruel as my teacher and parents told me. In fact, competition is the opposite: it is kind and necessary.
A.At the same time, a lion wakes from his dream.
B.I suddenly knew what competition was.
C.Now I understand more about the world.
D.In one’s life, there must be competitions, so people can improve.
E.I learned a lot from realizing this fact.
F.However, I remembered my parents’ words: “You must work very hard in order to have a good future.”
G.Whether you are an antelope or a lion, you must go ahead when the sun rises.

I was really starving when I stepped out of the city library after an entire afternoon buried in books. Then I smelt something delicious—the hot dog stand at the street corner.
“One hot dog, please!” I nearly rushed to the stand.
“OK, ready soon!” The vendor (摊主) replied cheerfully. As he handed me the hot dog, he grinned, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I guessed that was the slogan for his little business, for the words were painted in cheerful yellow letters on his cart.
I couldn’t wait to take a bite. The warm bread, the chilli sauce and the juice in the sausage — it was the best thing in the world! Definitely at that time!
“Five dollars, young lady,” the vendor said, wiping his hands on his apron.
Hot dog in one hand, I reached for my wallet with the other. Just then, “Ouch!” a cry came from behind me. I turned back and found a woman in her 50’s struggling to pick herself up from the ground. Her grocery bag split open with oranges rolling in every direction.
Seeing this, I stuffed the rest of the hot dog into my mouth, picked up the oranges and put them back into her bag. “Are you okay ” I asked with concern.
“Thank you. I didn’t see the pole on the ground,” she breathed. Noticing her hand was wounded, I remembered the Band-Aid(创可贴)in my bag and dug it out. “Thank you so much for your kindness,” the woman said as I carefully applied it to her wound. Across the street, the bus I was about to take was pulling in. Waving a goodbye to the woman, I dashed to the bus stop and barely got aboard before the door closed.
As the bus pulled away, I saw the woman bought a hot dog from the same vendor. On the way, I was always wondering if she would be greeted with the same words, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I was lost in it...

Dear Sally,
I’m glad to hear that you are planning to come to Beijing, and I’d like to tell you something about it.
Beijing, the capital of China, has a long history. There are many places of interest for you to visit, such as the Great Wall, the Summer Palace and so on. In my opinion, the best season to come to Beijing is autumn because it is neither too hot nor too cold, and you can enjoy the beautiful flowers and trees everywhere. What’s more, you can also taste some delicious food here, like Beijing Roast Duck.
I am sure that you will have a great time when travelling in Beijing. Looking forward to your coming!

第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分)
Paragraph 1:
But wait — had I forgotten something My heart suddenly sank as I realized I hadn’t paid the vendor! Frantically checking my wallet, I confirmed the five dollars were still there. The scene flashed back: I had dropped the wallet while helping the woman. The bus was already moving, and I could do nothing but watch the hot dog stand shrink in the distance, guilt overwhelming me.
Paragraph 2:
“Someone has paid for it,” the vendor smiled. Puzzled, I followed his gaze to the woman I had helped earlier. She waved at me warmly from the street corner. The vendor explained, “She insisted on paying for you, saying kindness deserves kindness.” Tears welled up as I understood — her hot dog purchase wasn’t just for herself. The vendor’s cheerful slogan now carried profound meaning, weaving our small acts of goodwill into something truly “the best in the world.”
