When I signed up for a triathlon (铁人三项) years ago, I had one goal. It wasn't to win the race -
or even to place in the top half . My goal was simple: not to finish in the last place.
Second to last OK. So long as I was not the last. I wanted to avoid the shame and mockery of a

Finally, I crossed the finish line, 121st out of 121 racers. Zane hugged and congratulated me. I
was embarrassed. I thought of an impressive number of excuses. But on our way back, the
humiliation faded. My embarrassment was gradually replaced by pride. I had reframed my last-place

I'm not a loser. I'm a triathlete and a role model for my son! Persistence and resilience, that's

Two-thirds of all irrigated agriculture in the world is likely to be affected in some way by
declining glaciers and dwindling snowfall in mountain regions, driven by the climate crisis,

the worst-affected areas. Eastern Africa has lost 80% of its glaciers in places. Glaciers in the Alps,
the worst affected in Europe, have shrunk by about 40% over roughly the same period.
The decline of glaciers has had a further impact, added Abou Amani, director of water sciences
at UNESCO. “Glaciers melting have an impact on the reflectivity of (solar) radiation and that will
impact the whole climate system,” he warned. More avalanches will also occur, as rain falling on

released, causing sudden floods in valleys or to people living further down the side of the mountain.

Early in my academic career, I noticed that one of the most popular classes on campus was
Introduction to Astronomy, a general-science course. The students all loved it—especially the
