In Baidoa, inside the simple walls of Al Camaara Temporary Learning Centre, something special is happening, one lesson at a time. At the heart of it is Shamsa Adan, a teacher who believes that every child, no matter where they come from, should have the chance to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
Shamsa has been with the school since its inception three years ago. From day one, she has helped to open its doors, not just physically, but emotionally, for hundreds of children from disadvantaged communities. She teaches Somali, Arabic, and math, wearing many hats in a two-classroom school that runs double shifts to accommodate 195 children. 90 of whom are girls. But it is not just the number of subjects she teaches that stands out — it is the difference she is making.
“When we started using the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach, I noticed something change in my students,” Shamsa says with a proud smile. “Children who used to stay silent began to speak up. Those who struggled with reading began to read full sentences.”
At the centre, the impact is deeply personal. “We love our teacher. She is kind, patient, and makes learning fun,” says Bilal, a student at the centre in Baidoa. “She always listens to us and helps us understand.” His face lights up as he talks about the joy of being in her class, a safe space where every child feels seen and supported.
For Shamsa, being kind is a choice she makes every day. “"Many of these children have gone through tough times like conflict (冲突), losing their homes, or losing loved ones,” she says. “Kindness helps them feel safe, heal, and learn.”
Looking ahead, Shamsa hopes the approach can be scaled up across more schools in Somalia. “This program works. I have seen it. Our children are learning because we meet them where they are.”

Since losing most of his livestock (牲畜) in recent continuing droughts in Kenya, Angelech Losoro has traded the dry lands of northwestern Kenya for the waters of nearby Lake Turkana, where he now makes a living by catching fish. In Turkana County alone, more than 200,000 pastoralists (牧民) like Losoro gave up their way of life. Lake Turkana, the world’s largest permanent desert lake, offers hope. It produced 17,300 metric tonnes of fish in recent years, and could produce considerably more.
However, challenges remain. As the number of pastoralists switching to fishing climbs, competition for resources increases between communities. Fishers also face difficulties in transporting their catches, which die quickly, to potential customers.
Some international organizations, together with the local government, are launching a project to take advantage of the lake to develop economy along the shores. This centers on ensuring the lake remains healthy with the support of scientific and technical expertise. They gather data on catches and all fish to effectively manage water resources. The project also helps expand solar-powered cold storage and solar drying equipment. Besides, they are devoted to training communities in better fish handling and processing techniques, allowing them to fetch higher prices and reach markets further away. And, recognizing that a healthy community depends on a healthy diet, the project aims to reduce local malnutrition (营养不良) rates, which are among the highest in the country, by encouraging people to include more protein-rich fish in their meals.
“Realizing the economic potential of Lake Turkana is not just about those aspects; it’s also about creating an enabling environment for peace and stability. When communities have access to well managed resources and opportunities, conflict is less likely to take hold,” said Claudia Ah Poe from one of the international organizations.
In all these efforts, cooperation is key, because ambitious goals cannot be achieved by acting alone. International organizations together with local government will therefore team with development partners, the private sectors and local communities.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers have discovered a faint source of infrared light in a dust-rich disk surrounding a young star named TWA 7, located about 111 light-years from the Earth. This source is believed to be an exoplanet, and if confirmed, it would represent the telescope’s first direct identification of a planet outside our solar system.
Traditionally, most known exoplanets have been found by using indirect methods, such as observing the faint reduction in light from a star when a planet passes in front of it. However, in a recent study published in the journal Nature, researchers have reported the first instance of the JWST capturing an image of an exoplanet directly. Imaging distant planets is so challenging. They are often outshone by their host stars. Anne-Marie Lagrange, the lead author of the study, explains that the brightness of the star makes it difficult to see the faint planet.
To overcome this challenge, the team used the JWST’s coronagraph (日冕仪), an instrument designed to block out the intense light from stars, allowing fainter objects to be detected more easily. After processing the images to reduce the remaining bright light, the JWST revealed a faint infrared source near TWA 7. While there is a small chance that this source could be a background galaxy, the researchers believe that the evidence strongly supports the existence of a new exoplanet, named TWA 7 b, which is estimated to have a mass similar to that of Saturn.
This discovery is significant because it could be the first time a planet is directly linked to the formation of a dust-rich disk around a star. The researchers also ran computer simulations that matched the telescope’s images, further confirming their findings. Co-author Mathilde Malin says that this discovery of course enhances our understanding of planetary systems, including our own, and opens new avenues for exploring the diversity of exoplanets and their formation processes.

I’d let the people who really mattered — the readers — decide whether my work was worthy, and whatever that decision was, I’d live with it. At least I’d know that I had given myself a fair shot. Then I got my answer. Four months later, my book, the one that nobody wanted to publish, incredibly became a hit online, catching the attention of a well-known publisher who reached out with an offer. The day the first printed copy arrived, I rushed to my mother and put it in her hands. Her joyful tears as she traced the title with her fingers were the greatest reward of all.
