It’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Toh Hong Keng, who has become one of the
oldest, if not the oldest, medical graduate in the world, got his degree from Southwestern
University PHINMA.
After decades working as a tech seller, Toh retired in 2019. A few days later, he began
studying and applying to medical schools around Asia. “The only reason why I decided to study
medicine was that I wanted to do something useful,”he said.
One of the obstacles Toh met was finding a university that would admit him, as most are just
for applicants under 35 or 40. Once admitted to Southwestern University PHINMA, he dealt with
the school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic and took all of his lectures online.
“Studying medicine is hard. It’s just hard work,” Toh said. He wasn’t given special
treatment. He was held back a year after failing an exam in his third year. And like the rest of
his classmates, in his final year, Toh was required to complete a one-year placement(实习工作) at
a hospital, with some shifts lasting up to 30 hours.
That’s why his family and classmates often visited him, inspiring him to keep going. “I was
initially surprised and curious about why he wanted to become a doctor at his age,”one of his
classmates Max said. “Despite being older, Toh was no less of a student. He was really
competitive, and a true inspiration. I’m proud to have graduated alongside such a remarkable
individual.”
Now, Toh is not sure if he’ll take the extra courses needed to become a practicing doctor,
but he has a message for anyone with similar dreams: “If you have a dream to be a medical
doctor, you can still do it at any age.”
24. Why did Toh Hong Keng decide to study medicine after retirement
A. To prove he can do anything. B. To make more money after retirement.
C. To achieve something meaningful. D. To set a world-rated record.
英语试题卷 第 3 页(共 8 页)
25. What was the difficulty Toh Hong Keng encountered before starting his studies
A. Adapting to the requirements of online learning.
B. Finding a medical school that would accept him.
C. Completing long shifts during his hospital placement.
D. Coping with the failure of an important examination.
26. How did Max view Toh Hong Keng after studying together
A. He felt sorry for Toh’s age.
B. He considered Toh less capable.
C. He was inspired by Toh’s determination.
D. He helped Toh with his studies.
27. What can we learn from Toh Hong Keng’s story
A. Medical school requires immense dedication and hard work.
B. Personal ambition should not be limited by one’s age.
C. Universities should reconsider their age restriction policies.
D. Support from family is crucial for achieving difficult goals.
Scientists are using some unusual helpers in their efforts to predict earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, and other natural phenomena. They are signing up thousands of dogs, goats, and other
farmyard animals — as well as a wide range of wildlife — in studies that will monitor their
movements from space.
The program uses tiny equipment fitted to animals. Their movements will be tracked from
space. “The aim is not only to study how they react to upcoming natural events but also to
examine animal migration, the spread of diseases among animals, and the impact of climate
change,”said project leader Martin Wikelski.
“Early experiments in Sicily on the sides of Mount Etna have shown promising results,”said
Wikelski.“We have found that the behavior of goats is quite effective in predicting large volcanic
eruptions.”The animals become nervous before an eruption and refuse to go to higher areas they
would usually visit gladly.“They what is coming. We don’t know how they
do it, but they do,”said Wikelski. Similarly, researchers monitoring dogs, sheep, and other farm
animals in the Abruzzo mountains found that these animals had foreseen seven out of eight major
earthquakes in the region over the past 12 years.
“We are now able to track most things,” added Wikelski. “For example, we can survey
wildlife health from space,”he said. Electronic ear tags fitted to wild pigs weigh only 30 grams.
Changes in an animal’s movements show if the pig develops a disease. Knowing when a disease
outbreak occurs in the wild can help control its impact on farms, researchers say. “This is a big
change for wildlife disease monitoring,”said Kevin Morelle, a scientist at the Max Planck Institute.
The technology should also help scientists understand the processes that drive migrations.
Their movements could soon uncover the secret behind the 2,000 -mile migrations they make
between Europe and Africa every year. “We will also be able to study how animal populations
react to habitat changes caused by global warming,”said Wikelski.
28. What is the main purpose of the program mentioned in the text
A. To track animal migration routes globally.
B. To research the impact of climate change on wildlife.
C. To monitor the spread of diseases among farm animals.
D. To predict natural disasters and study ecological issues.

Xichang Marathon in Liangshan Celebrates Sports and Scenery
On November 1st, about 18,000 participants gathered in Liangshan to take part in the annual Xichang Marathon, which upgrades Liangshan’s international influence. The 42km route snaked around the beautiful Qionghai Lake, with elite runners cheered by enthusiastic locals.
As a citizen of Liangshan, I feel proud of our hometown because more and more people have appreciated its unique charm through this event — its perfect combination of natural beauty, culinary delights as well as the hospitality of the local residents.

A week later, the teacher handed back the papers. Lila’s heart raced as she turned hurriedly to the last page. There, in red ink, was a score that made her gasp. As she walked home, the sun shining bright, she knew this lesson would stay with her — through college, and through challenges ahead. Difficulties were just stones on the path, and she’d learned to step over them, one steady step at a time.
