At a summer camp in a Southern California suburb, the grandmas were in charge. Every week, they taught a group of 8-to-14-year- olds life skills like how to cook and sew (缝制). “Loneliness is something that seniors are challenged with, and they love having younger people around them,” said Zainab Hussain, a program manager at Olive Community Services, a nonprofit that hosted the camp to bring teens and elderly adults together.
In the camp, a small room was filled with energy as the kids chatted and chewed on snacks. Some grandmas were around and watched, content to just be around the youngsters.
Haqiqah Abdul Rahim, one of the grandmas serving as the instructor for sewing, said many kids don’t learn these skills at school, so they’re filling in a gap. She stood in front of the room at the start of the activity, holding up various tools and explaining what they were. Rahim also didn’t get to spend a lot of time with her grandchildren because they didn’t live close. “It is heartwarming to be able to interact with those who love being around you,” Rahim said.
The summer camp was held in partnership with the Golden Connections Club, started by14-year-old high school student Leena Albinali. She lived with her grandma but realized other students didn't have the same opportunity to spend as much time with their grandparents. She also learned about ageism (年龄歧视) and other challenges faced by senior adults in one of her classes.
“They treat us like we’re their grandchildren,” Albinali said.“ We share what we know about artificial intelligence and its impact on our lives, and the elders share their life stories and advice. One of the most important things they’ve shared with me is to live in the moment, something that’s taken on new meaning for me — The people we have right now are not going to be with us forever.”
4. What is the purpose of the summer camp
A. To teach kids life skills. B. To help seniors fight loneliness.
C. To connect generations. D. To educate kids to respect seniors.
5. How does Rahim find her job of teaching sewing in the camp
A. It makes up for the lessons at school.
B. It offers career options to kids in future.
C. It inspires kids’ interest in her profession.
D It reminds her to contact her grandchildren.
6. What inspired Albinali to set up Golden Connections Club
A. Her school’s support. B. Her own experience.
C. Seniors’ common voice. D. Ageism her grandma got.
7. What message does Albinali want to convey in the last paragraph
A. The shared challenges facing generations.
B. The curiosity of seniors about technology.
C. The wisdom of the seniors’ life experience.
D. The enriching exchange across generations.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. D

When you think of a school cafeteria, what comes to mind Plate sounds, lunch lines, and the occasional food fight, right For years, my school’s cafeteria was just a space with shining lighting, plastic tables, and dull yellowish-brown walls. But last semester, something magical happened. A student-led art project made the cafeteria a creative center, which stimulated conversations, developed a sense of community, and even made lunchtime feel more special.
It all started with a simple idea during an art club meeting. A student named Maya pointed out that the cafeteria felt like a hospital waiting room and suggested working with the school to improve the space. With approval from the headmaster and a small budget, students across grades 9-12 began brainstorming themes and sketches.
The goal was not only to decorate walls, but to create a space that reflected diversity, celebrated talent, and sparked curiosity. After weeks of planning, teams of students worked in shifts after school, transforming blank walls into murals (壁画), replacing old furniture with painted designs, and hanging student-made sculptures from the ceiling. Today, stepping into the cafeteria feels like entering an interactive art exhibit.
The artwork not only brightened the space but also shifted the cafeteria’s role in our school culture. Teachers noticed students staying after lunch to discuss the murals. Shy freshmen bonded through painting sessions. Even the lunch staff got involved, suggesting themes like “gratitude for food”. The transformation also had ripple (涟漪) effects, like reducing littering.
Ms. Rivera, the art teacher who advised the project, shared, “This wasn’t about perfection. It was about giving students ownership of their environment. It builds confidence and pride when students see their work valued in a shared space.” “Art in the cafeteria isn’t just about making things look nice. It reminds us that our school is not just a building. It’s our space, and we have the power to change it,” she added.
8. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1

The world buys over a million plastic bottles every minute, and most people end up as pollution that lasts for centuries. Plastic bottles are usually made from a material called PET, which is hard to reuse properly. Most used PET becomes lower quality plastic that still gets thrown away later. To increase material recovery quality, a research team from the University of Edinburgh has developed innovative approaches that give plastic a renewed purpose without traditional reprocessing methods.
The process is surprisingly simple. First, scientists break the plastic into small chemical pieces. Then, the research team works with a common bacterium called E. coli. The bacteria eat the pieces and turn them into painkiller medicine. The experiment is successful and shows plastic waste can become something useful instead of just trash.
Dr. Stephen Wallace, who led the study, said, “We estimate (估计) that one plastic water bottle could produce about nine regular painkiller tablets (药片). While this amount needs improving for large-scale production, it proves the idea works. In the experiment, the bacteria successfully changed medicine within one day. All this happens in water at normal room temperature without pollution, unlike traditional medicine making that needs lots of energy and discharges greenhouse gases.”
Although plastic raw materials are very easy to collect and process, there are still challenges before this plastic-made medicine reaches stores. Scientists are planning strict tests to prove the treatment carries no health risks and has no negative effects. However, this new method could help turn this waste into valuable medicine while reducing the need for oil in medicine production. It shows how science can find solutions that help both people and the environment through innovation.
While more research is needed, this breakthrough offers hope for a future where plastic waste becomes a resource rather than a problem. It represents an important step toward cleaner medicine production and smarter ways to deal with our plastic waste. The study reminds us that with innovation, we can find ways to solve environmental challenges while still making the products we need.
12. What is the purpose of the research team’s study
A. To recycle plastic bottles better. B. To discover new bacterial species.
C. To invent better painkiller medicine. D. To increase the production of plastics.
13. What does Dr. Stephen Wallace think of the experiment
A. It brings negative medical effects, B. It is ready for mass production.
C. It is an environmentally friendly process. D. It takes much time and requires patience.
14. What will the researchers do next
A. Collect various raw materials. B. Put the medicine on the market.
C. Ensure the safety of the medicine. D. Reduce the need for oil in medicine.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the study
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Disapproving. D. Unclear.

____16____ This simple action shows that you’re fully focused in the interaction, helping to build a connection much like in-person conversations. If your eyes wander away to something else in your environment, your interviewer might assume that you are distracted. Staring at a tiny dot instead of someone’s face might feel strange, but what truly matters is how you come across to the person on the other side of the screen.
Mind your facial expressions. ____17____ Use it during introductions or when responding to lighthearted moments. It conveys enthusiasm and makes you appear more friendly and welcoming. ____18____ For instance, show confidence and enthusiasm when talking about your accomplishments, and maintain a thoughtful look when answering tough questions.
Pay attention to your posture (姿势). The key is to change between sitting upright and leaning in throughout the interview. ____19____ For example, when the interviewer shares key details about the role or company, a slight lean forward signals heightened interest and attentiveness. If you lean back in your chair, it can give off the impression that you’ re really thrown into the conversation.
Use natural hand gestures. After establishing confident eye contact and maintaining an open posture, adding natural hand gestures can not only get your points across but also convey enthusiasm and boost confidence during virtual interviews. Interestingly, research suggests that hand movements can even aid memory and language recall, making you a better storyteller during interviews. Remember to strike a balance. ____20____

Two-Day Weekend: Blessing or Challenge
Recently, the two-day weekend policy for students has brought about the discussion — “Is it a blessing or a challenge ” Different people have different opinions about it.
On the one hand, some people think it’s a blessing. For example, students can reduce study stress by doing sports, and use the time to develop hobbies like reading.
On the other hand, others think it’s a challenge. For example, some worry they’ll fall behind in studies without weekend tutoring, and some even waste time on phone games.
Personally, we should make a good plan: spend a little time reviewing lessons and more on relaxing activities to balance study and rest.

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind and caring, and always made people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I love going to the local nursing home to help with her when I was a child. However, once I became a teenager, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was 12, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. But I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything At last, I made my way outside with my mother. Angry and annoyed, I climbed into the car and shoot the door loudly. I sat in silence, too upset to talk. “Tasha, do you know where we are going ” Mom asked calmly. I remained silent. “Sweetheart, we’re going to the children’s shelter. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
I feel a pain slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. As we approached the front door, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and flowers welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so.
Mom rang the doorbell. We were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was seriously wounded. Most of the children had noticeable physical scars such as cuts, burns and scratches. What a terrible life they must had had before they moved here! My heart sank. As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.

【答案】One possible version:
I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. Her angelic face lighted, although there were some scars on her little arms. “Hi. I’m Ashley. Do you want to play dolls with me ” she asked. I looked over and saw Mom nodding to me with a smile. I bent toward Ashley and whispered, “Sure. I’d love to.” Her tiny hand reached up and took mine, and we walked toward the doll house. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the sheer with Mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me in great detail. I felt sorry for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. At the same time, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was a meaningful time in my young life that I will never forget. It was Mom who taught me the valuable lesson that summer.
