I am a university professor. I teach at an arts school in Southern California. Last year, I decided to become a student and signed up for online Arabic classes.
Arabic is a hard language, given its large vocabulary (词汇). My new teacher was Cairo-based and about my own age. We would meet a few times a month to practice conversation and go over grammar. During our conversation practice, he also shared details of his life, including his struggle (努力) to care for two young children and older parents.
The awkwardness of the first few lessons gave way to more familiarity (熟悉) and comfort. I stopped feeling self-conscious (难为情的) about the fact that I was a teacher myself. After a while, though, I opened up about my own background and my struggles with Arabic.
“Don’t worry; I am here to teach you. You are a very hardworking student and it is my pleasure to help you,” said my teacher.
I had comforted my students with similar words in my own teaching. It was strange to hear them directed at me. The tables had turned. Now I, as a student, was the one asking for help. I had to be humble (谦虚的) as I struggled to learn a language. I had more to learn about being a teacher as well.
“You are clever today,” my teacher would often say when I used varied vocabulary or expressions. When I heard these four words for the first time, I felt really happy. It truly surprised me that such simple praise could build up my confidence so much.
That’s when I realized how little I had praised my own students. I thought too much praise made students complacent (自满的), even lazy. Now, as a student, I saw things differently. I had a change of heart. Now I praise as often and as sincerely (真诚地) as I can, knowing that these simple words can mean a lot. Words matter. And now I choose to be more thoughtful about how I use them.

Goldfish have long been a beloved family pet. However, there is a growing problem associated with these popular fish. Goldfish are taking over rivers in many towns where well-meaning people have “freed” their fish into the wild.
Such is the case in West Medical Lake of Washington. Goldfish can grow very large. As a result, their population grew quite fast, and they quickly destroyed (毁坏) all the food sources that the rest of the fish depend upon in the lake.
Sadly, setting free goldfish is very common. One survey of people in Texas found that anywhere from 20 to 70 percent of fish owners put their fish into bodies of water.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said that it can cost up to $150,000 to take away the foreign species (物种) from the lake. It’s such a serious problem that fish and wildlife officials said they are considering making setting goldfish free into the wild a crime (犯罪), and prosecuting (起诉) those responsible.
“If they get caught doing that and get prosecuted, they could have to pay for fixing the problem they created,” said Randy Osborne, a fisheries biologist for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
So what should you do if you no longer want to care for your pet fish Well, if you can’t find a willing friend or family member to help care for them, contact your local pet shop or animal shelter (避难所). Many shelters do not just find homes for cats and dogs, but also birds, rabbits and fish. You might also join a goldfish club in your town or on Facebook, and then reach out to people to try and find someone who can take care of your pet.
And, if your fish are ill, do not put these ill fish into the wild or flush (冲走) them down your toilet. “A sick fish can introduce harmful things like the disease it had into the water,” wrote PetHelpful, a website sharing knowledge on pets. “Keeping our waterways clean and safe is important for future generations.”

Does rain make you sleepy If so, you’re not alone! Many people say the sound of raindrops hitting the window can put them right to sleep. In fact, people often turn on recordings of the sound of rain to help them fall asleep at night. Why does rain have this influence on people
There are a few reasons why a rainy day might make you sleepy. One is the lack (缺乏) of sunlight. When sunlight shines on the human body, it produces less melatonin (褪黑素) and more serotonin (血清素). This makes people feel more awake and cheerful. The lack of light on a rainy day can have the opposite influence — people may feel sleepy or a little blue.

The sound of rain also plays a part. Rain is pink noise. A study found that pink noise reduces brain waves. Experts believe this makes it a possible sleep aid. Rain isn’t the only example of pink noise in nature. Other examples include blowing leaves, wind, and the sound of your own heartbeat.
Of course, rain isn’t the only type of weather that has an influence on the human body. During the winter months, many areas see less sunlight. Many people experience a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder, which means they experience low spirits during this time. Have you ever noticed that more people get sick during cold months That’s because illnesses like the flu grow and spread (传播) easier when it’s cold outside.
The opposite is also true. People often experience lower blood pressure in the summer. Increased sunlight can lead the body to build up serotonin, leading to a mood boost (情绪提升). Some researchers also believe spending time outside on a pleasant day can increase creative thinking.

I am a university professor. I teach at an arts school in Southern California. Last year, I decided to become a student and signed up for online Arabic classes.
Arabic is a hard language, given its large vocabulary (词汇). My new teacher was Cairo-based and about my own age. We would meet a few times a month to practice conversation and go over grammar. During our conversation practice, he also shared details of his life, including his struggle (努力) to care for two young children and older parents.

“You are clever today,” my teacher would often say when I used varied vocabulary or expressions. When I heard these four words for the first time, I felt really happy. It truly surprised me that such simple praise could build up my confidence so much.
That’s when I realized how little I had praised my own students. I thought too much praise made students complacent (自满的), even lazy. Now, as a student, I saw things differently. I had a change of heart. Now I praise as often and as sincerely (真诚地) as I can, knowing that these simple words can mean a lot. Words matter. And now I choose to be more thoughtful about how I use them.

Goldfish have long been a beloved family pet. However, there is a growing problem associated with these popular fish. Goldfish are taking over rivers in many towns where well-meaning people have “freed” their fish into the wild.
Such is the case in West Medical Lake of Washington. Goldfish can grow very large. As a result, their population grew quite fast, and they quickly destroyed (毁坏) all the food sources that the rest of the fish depend upon in the lake.
Sadly, setting free goldfish is very common. One survey of people in Texas found that anywhere from 20 to 70 percent of fish owners put their fish into bodies of water.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said that it can cost up to $150,000 to take away the foreign species (物种) from the lake. It’s such a serious problem that fish and wildlife officials said they are considering making setting goldfish free into the wild a crime (犯罪), and prosecuting (起诉) those responsible.
“If they get caught doing that and get prosecuted, they could have to pay for fixing the problem they created,” said Randy Osborne, a fisheries biologist for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
So what should you do if you no longer want to care for your pet fish Well, if you can’t find a willing friend or family member to help care for them, contact your local pet shop or animal shelter (避难所). Many shelters do not just find homes for cats and dogs, but also birds, rabbits and fish. You might also join a goldfish club in your town or on Facebook, and then reach out to people to try and find someone who can take care of your pet.
And, if your fish are ill, do not put these ill fish into the wild or flush (冲走) them down your toilet. “A sick fish can introduce harmful things like the disease it had into the water,” wrote PetHelpful, a website sharing knowledge on pets. “Keeping our waterways clean and safe is important for future generations.”

Does rain make you sleepy If so, you’re not alone! Many people say the sound of raindrops hitting the window can put them right to sleep. In fact, people often turn on recordings of the sound of rain to help them fall asleep at night. Why does rain have this influence on people
There are a few reasons why a rainy day might make you sleepy. One is the lack (缺乏) of sunlight. When sunlight shines on the human body, it produces less melatonin (褪黑素) and more serotonin (血清素).
