M: Actually I’m retired, but I study Italian at the evening school every Tuesday and Friday. I love
learning new things which helps keep my brain healthy. Exercise is important too, so I work as a
dog walker for some of my neighbors. It’s perfect since I have free time during the day while
they’re at work, how about you
W: I usually go jogging in the morning and play chess with my friends in the afternoon. I also
believe it matters a lot to keep both the body and brain active.

W: Let me check the records. Oh, I see the book was damaged by a careless student. A new copy
will arrive this Friday.
M: That’s too bad. I need it for my lab report right now. I’ll wait then. By the way, I left a black
folder with my experiment data here yesterday. Has anybody seen it
W: Yes. One was handed in this morning. It’s in the Lost and Found box at the entrance. You just
need to show your student ID card to claim it.
M: Oh no, I don’t have my card with me. I’ll get it later. Also a chair by the window of the reading
area is shaky and makes a loud noise.
W: Don’t worry, someone is repairing it. It’s 3:15 now and the work should be finished in about 15
minutes. Please come back then.
M: Got it.
【 9 】 M: Welcome to Daily Talk! Today we’re joined by Kate Smith, an archaeologist from
Germany. Kate, what did you discover in your latest research
W: We uncovered several antiques. The most valuable find was a small bronze container decorated
with cloud patterns. It was probably used to hold water. We also discovered a shell necklace, which
we believe belonged to children, as well as some stone tools like a knife for cutting plants.
M: Those sound fascinating, but I imagine the work wasn’t easy. What challenges did your team
face
W: The wind was our biggest challenge. For two weeks, strong winds blew heavily. Also the bronze
container was buried very deep and it took us three days to remove it safely.
M: Painstaking process but satisfying result, right Will these items be on display in a museum
W: Maybe, but not right away, because we’ll give the items a good clean first. Then we’ll recheck
their age and take detailed records in the lab. So far, we haven’t found a safe way to display them
yet. More visitors could also mean a higher risk of damage, but we will consider it once everything
is ready.
