Wilma Rudolph was born with many challenges. She was born into a large family at a time when African-American babies could not get the best doctors and hospitals. As a child, she was sick with a long list of diseases including pneumonia (肺炎), which left her left leg weak and not fully normal.
But Wilma had a loving and devoted family who made sure she got medical attention and provided physical treatment themselves four times a day. She wore a leg brace (腿部支架) from the time she was five until she was nine years old. Then, one Sunday, she walked by herself. By age 11, she was a basketball star at her school.
When the track coach at Tennessee State University saw Wilma play basketball, he knew he wanted her to run for his team. As a high school student, she never lost a track meet. Wilma began attending college practices while still in high school. When she was just 16, she competed in the 1956 Olympics in Australia and her team won the bronze medal in the 4×100m relay.
Wilma continued to train and four years later, the Olympics were held again, and Wilma was the star in Italy. She became the first American woman to win three gold medals in one Olympics. She was so fast. People used to say that if you blinked (眨眼), you would miss her.
When Wilma went home to Tennessee, the governor wanted to have a victory parade (游行) for her, but Wilma said she would not attend unless blacks and whites were able to go together. Her parade was the first inclusive event held in her hometown.
For the rest of her life, Wilma continued to promote athletics. She created the Wilma Rudolph Foundation to help young athletes, worked as a track coach at DePauw University in Indiana and served as a goodwill ambassador (亲善大使) to West Africa.

Wendi Aarons was writing at her local library when the sound of an angry voice made everyone look up. A customer, angry about a book policy, promised to take her child to another library and stormed off (气冲冲地离开) after yelling at the staff. The entire room was “so upset,” said Ms. Aarons, a humorist. “It was just this awful, uncomfortable silence.”
But Ms. Aarons, an expert at balancing humor and discomfort, saw an opening. She stood up and said, “Hey, does anybody have the number for this other library Because I want to call and give them a heads-up. (预先通知,预先劝告)” Laughter erupted; the mood lifted. Things returned to normal. This is the power of “lightening up.”
Humor and levity (轻松愉悦) are related. There are more studies on humor — and other phenomena like laughter, playfulness, amusement and cheerfulness, Willibald Ruch, a positive psychology researcher, said. The core element that exists in these two overlapping (重叠的) experiences is a sense of lightness, as well as an attitude of not taking everything so seriously.
Though claiming “laughter is the best medicine” might be a bridge too far (言过其实), a good laugh has possible effects. There are studies associating laughter with positive changes in heart rate, blood pressure and muscle (肌肉) tension. And there are studies that connect laughter, humor and feeling amused to increases in optimism, feeling in control and life satisfaction, as well as reductions in stress and anxiety.
The idea of “working on levity” may feel a little forced. But, like building any other habit, practice helps — and there’s proof that purposely creating amusing experiences has the same benefits as spontaneous (自发的) amusement. So Dr. Ruch and his team had participants take an eight-week humor training course in which they completed the following tasks: They watched more funny TV shows, laughed louder or longer than they normally would, identified puns (双关) in media and conversations, and made jokes. Humor trainees reported increases in cheerfulness and reduced seriousness as a result.
46. How does the author lead into the topic
A. By telling a story of Ms. Aarons. B. By mentioning a study led by Dr. Ruch.
C. By describing his own experience. D. By raising a question about humor.
47. What was the immediate effect of Wendi Aarons’ words
A. The tension was relieved. B. The angry customer returned.
C. The library staff felt surprised. D. The silence became comfortable.
48. What can we learn about levity according to paragraph 3
A. It ignores serious topics. B. It involves laughing sincerely.
C. It needs professional training. D. It requires a sense of non-seriousness.
49. What does the author think of “laughter is the best medicine”
A. Exaggerated. (夸张的) B. Popular. C. Unproven. D. Significant.
50. Why did Dr. Ruch have participants take a humor training course
A. To reduce their stress levels. B. To improve their sense of humor.
C. To explain why people need humor. D. To test how practiced humor benefits.
D
Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle (挣扎,奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges (挑战) of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly.
When people are young, meeting and overcoming (克服) challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.
Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.
51. From the story we know that the butterfly can’t fly because ________.
A. the man feels sorry for it B. the man helps it come out
C. it gets out by itself D. it tries to challenge itself
52. Dennis’s example shows that successful people should ________.
A. take up business early B. sell clothes from door to door
C. overcome the difficulties D. become the leaders of tomorrow
53. The meaning of the underlined word “mature” in the passage is “________”.
A. take up B. get up C. wake up D. grow up
54. What is the writer trying to do in the passage
A. Encourage young people to face challenges.
B. Suggest how to become a successful businessman.
C. Explain what will happen if a person fails the exam.
D. Describe where a butterfly comes from.
55. What is the best title for this passage
A. Successful People Have a Sense of Achievement
B. Young People Must Develop Their Energy Actively
C. Countries Should Continue to Become Successful
D. Challenges of Life Bring Out the Best in Young People
第II卷 (共35分)
第四部分:写作 (共两节,满分35分)
第一节 阅读表达 (共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Neil Shuttleworth, an 82-year-old English man, was hardly able to walk because of osteoarthritis (骨关节炎) in his right ankle. Problems began for Neil after he accidentally stepped into an unseen hole in a road surface while on holiday in Cyprus several years ago. Thankfully, he received an artificial ankle made from the materials of bulletproof (防弹的) vests.
Neil, who is a retired printing specialist from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, paid for the operation himself since it is not currently available on the National Health Service (NHS). When he finally chose to have the operation, he said it was because he had just one strong desire: to walk hand-in-hand with Christine, his wife of 34 years. “Actually, I wasn’t expecting to run a marathon. I would like to walk down the Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes with my wife, but without the pain I had lived with for far too long,” Neil said.
The operation uses polyethylene (聚乙烯) materials that are used to make bulletproof vests, but with extra added vitamin (维生素) E. Since the E-poly is made from strong plastic fibers, it is expected to last much longer than current replacements.
Before he was injured, Neil had always led an active lifestyle which involved running and cycling across the UK and Europe. After he stepped into the hole, which was several inches deep, he said he could not walk more than a few hundred yards as the pain in his ankle was so excruciating. Neil is now one of the first patients in the UK to have such an ankle replacement operation.
After wearing a special walker boot for six weeks following his operation, Neil received a strict six-week treatment that adopts special exercises. He is now able to walk a couple of miles, and he uses a running machine in order to build his fitness levels even further. “The results of Neil’s operation are impressive and there is at least an 80 to 90% chance the ankle replacement will survive for 10 to 15years,” said Professor Nick Harris, who performed the operation.
56. Why couldn’t Neil walk (no more than 10 words)
57. What did Neil expect to do according to Paragraph 2 (no more than 10 words)
