It was the first day of senior high, and I was on edge. The classroom was full of chatter, but Ikept my eyes down. My family had just moved to the city after my father lost his job, and I didn't know anyone.
As students rushed to claim desks, only one seat remained—— next to a boy named Daniel, also a transfer student in this class. He glanced at me, then quickly looked away. I sat down quietly, hoping to disappear.
Over the next few weeks, I noticed Daniel never joined in group activities. He ate alone, spoke little, and always wore the same faded jacket. Rumor (谣言) had it that he’d struggled with learning for years —— some busybodies even said that he wasn't agile
One afternoon, our teacher announced a science project —— partners only. When everyone paired up, I found myself standing alone. until Daniel hesitantly raised his hand and offered, almost too softly to hear,“Can we work together ”
I agreed. To my surprise, Daniel knew everything about ecosystems—— he’d spent summers volunteering at a nature center. He explained concepts clearly, drew detailed diagrams, and even stayed late to help me build our model. I realized his quietness wasn't weakness—— it was focus. The rumor proved to be ill-founded.
On presentation day, we earned top marks. After class, Daniel smiled for the first time.“Thanks for not judging me,” he said.
“No,”I replied,“thank you for giving me a chance.”
We walked out of the classroom side by side. From then on, never again assumed silence meant emptiness—— or that a faded jacket hid nothing worth seeing.

Until the invention of artificial lighting, the sun was the major source of lighting, and people spent their evenings in (relative) darkness. Now, in much of the world, streets and homes are lit up at night, and we don't think twice about having so much light whenever we want it.
But we may be paying a price for bathing in all that light. At night, light throws the body's biological clock in disorder. Sleep suffers—— people take longer to fall asleep, wake up more often during the night, and feel less rested in the morning. Over time, this disruption may seriously affect both mental and physical health.
Not all colors of light have the same effect. Blue wavelengths, which are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction time, and mood, seem to be the most disturbing at night. And the popularity of electronics with screens is increasing our exposure to blue wavelengths, especially after sundown.
While light of any kind can affect the release of melatonin (褪黑素), blue light at night does so more powerfully. Harvard researchers and their colleagues conducted an experiment comparing the effects of 6.5 hours of exposure to blue light to exposure to green light of comparable brightness. The blue light holds up melatonin for about twice as long as the green light.
In another study of blue light, researchers at Toronto compared the melatonin levels of people exposed to bright indoor light who were wearing blue-light- bloeking goggles(护目镜) to people exposed to regular soft light without wearing goggles. The levels of melatonin were about the same in the two groups. It suggests that shift workers and night owls could perhaps protect themselves if they wore eyewear that blocks blue light.
28. What is modern people's attitude to wide use of artificial light
A. They attempt to avoid using it.
B. They take it as a normal part of life.
C. They are concerned about its harm.
D. They consider it as a waste of energy.
29. What do we know about blue light
A. It's easy to block. B. It's harmful all day.
C. It worsens emotions. D. It has opposite effects.
30. What can be concluded from the Harvard experiment
A. Six hours of light exposure is safe.
B. Green light hardly affects melatonin.
C. Brightness controls melatonin release.
D. Blue light affects melatonin more strongly.
31. Why did researchers at Toronto make the comparison
A. To test if goggles effectively work.
B. To prove goggles are widely usable.
C. To find out which light is more harmful.
D. To check whether goggles are comfortable.
Baojia site in the city of Liyang, east China's Jiangsu Province, has been confirmed to date back 7,500 to 8,100 years, making it the earliest known prehistoric site discovered so far in the area surrounding Taihu Lake.
The site covers an existing area of around 20,000 to 30,000 square meters. Since 2023, an archaeological (考古的) team from the Jiangsu provincial institute of cultural relics and archaeology and the Nanjing Museum has been conducting digging at the site with approval from the NationalCultural Heritage Administration.
At the site, archaeologists have identified an ancient east-west river channel. Hu Yingfang, the lead archaeologist, said they had also made a significant discovery beneath this channel—— an earlier river course containing deposits (沉积物) measuring 2.5 meters deep. These deposits are rich in organic remains and objects from ancient human activities.
The team's findings are exceptionally diverse and well-preserved. They consist of various types of pottery, wooden objects, plant remains, animal remains including bones of mammals, and some woven objects, such as ropes made from grass.
“ The waterlogged conditions preserved a vast amount of organic material, which contains crucial environmental and cultural information which is helpful for reconstructing the lives of ancient residents,” said Hu.
Radiocarbon dating of plant seeds from different areas at the site has indicated that it dates back to 7,500 to 8,100 years ago, according to Hu.
Additionally, over 200 ash pits were uncovered on the site's eastern area. Among these, one pit contained a complete dog skeleton.
Following field investigations and discussions, nearly 10 experts from institutions including theChinese Academy of Social Sciences, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University and RenminUniversity of China concluded that Baojia site is the earliest prehistoric site found to date aroundTaihu Lake.
They also recognized that this site possesses distinct cultural characteristics. The discovery fills a critical gap in the Neolithic (新石器时代的) cultural timeline in this area and provides key evidence for tracing the origins of Yangtze River civilization.
32. Why are the deposits considered important
A. They are exceptionally deep and easy to dig.
B. They prove the existence of an east-west river.
C. They hold well-preserved evidence of ancient life.
D. They are suitable for the growth of organic crops.
33. How did the archaeologists determine the age of Baojia site
A. By examining the animal and plant remains.
B. By analyzing the objects beneath the channel.
C. By investigating the depth of the river deposits.
D. By studying plant seeds using radiocarbon dating.
34. What can be inferred from the recognition of Baojia site
A. Ancient people kept dogs as companions long ago.
B. Similar sites have already been found in other pars of China.
C. The Neolithic culture around Taihu Lake was once poorly known.
D. Yangtze River civilization is much richer than previously imagined.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Approval Was Made to Study Taihu Lake
B. A New Museum Opens in the City of Liyang
C. Baojia Site Casts Light on Early Yangtze River civilization
D. Yangtze River civilization will Become Popular-Overnight

The sun was shining over the parking lot of the sports centre. My best friend Janey and I stood by an old truck. It belonged to the company that had just laid new grass on the football field. There was still a lot of extra grass in the back —— left over from the job.
For months, we'd walked past a small empty lot near our school every day —— a place full of weeds, old bottles, and broken bricks. It looked ugly, lifeless and forgotten.
Seeing the leftover grass in the truck, Janey's eyes lit up. “Let's take some!” she said excitedly. “We could spread it on that empty lot, Imagine green grass instead of all that rubbish there!”
A wave of doubt washed over me. “But we haven’ t asked. Taking it without permission isn’ t right.”“The company won't need it,” she argued. I shook my head. “What if they don't allow it We could get into real trouble then.” I still stuck to my guns. “There's no one here to ask!” she said firmly. “With such strong sunlight, the grass will dry out and go to waste!”
Just then, a security guard of the parking lot came around the corner. “Hey! What are you doing there ” he called out.
My heart jumped. Janey quickly pulled me behind the truck. As we moved, we touched the tailgate (后挡板) by accident and it burst open —— several rolls of grass fell to the ground with a dull sound. The guard hurried over. “What's going on here ” he asked, his eyes on the fallen grass.
