“I am so sorry,” I tearfully said to my principal investigator (PI), explaining I would not be able to return to work as originally planned. Before I became a parent, I had assumed a baby would fit right into my academic plans. But now, as the end of my leave approached, I realized I couldn’t simply carry on as I always had. I was worried this decision might signal the end of my academic career — but I felt I had no other choice.
Thankfully, my PI had more foresight. He told me I didn’t need to resign and that he could offer me a contract that would allow me to contribute to our project from afar. It proved to be an absolute career lifeline tailored to me.
Then five years after stepping back from academia, I felt ready to re-enter more fully. Because I had been able to keep my hand in during my time away, the prospect was much less daunting than it would have been otherwise. I ended up landing a lecturer position that allowed me to slowly ease back in, focusing on teaching and scholarship with research taking a back seat. And when, 4 years on, a senior lectureship position came up in the very group I had left a decade earlier, the timing was right. With both of my children in “big school”, I was ready to really put my foot down on the career accelerator. I got the job.
Now, 6 months into my new role, I am happy to be right where it all began, with involvement in so many interesting projects. But what truly made the difference for me was the offer of what I needed during that time away. I hope more institutions and PIs can come up with creative provisions (条款) for those in their workforce who don’t want to give up their careers but want-or-need to take extended periods of leave. And to those who are taking such breaks, or considering it, know that returning is possible. Above all, on both sides: Please do not discount extended leavers. We have a lot to offer — if we are given the chance.
24. What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph
A. Her path to PI began when she became a parent.
B. She struck a balance between work and family.
C. She had intended to stick to her academic plans.
D. She chose to prioritize her career over her family.
25. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 3
A. Fearsome. B. Realistic. C. Regretful. D. Promising.
26. What contributed most to her success according to the author
A. Academic researches. B. Supportive work environment.
C. Interest in the projects. D. Involvement in engaging projects.
27. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A. To analyse. B. To entertain. C. To report. D. To promote.
C
“From wearing silly clothes to holding funny ceremonies, such seemingly bizarre rituals (仪式) can be seen everywhere, and most of them do not seem to serve any obvious purpose,” Dimitris Xygalatas writes at the beginning of his new book Rituals: How Seemingly Senseless Acts Make Life Worth Living.
Then why are humans still in love with such rituals
Some of them are intended to unify the participants. The goose steps practised by the soldiers all around the world area great example. When we all perform the same actions in a predictable way, as rituals often require, it can create a sense of togetherness and cooperation, which maybe a matter of life and death in the face of danger.
Many rituals originated when humans started living in ever bigger groups, which exposed them to all kinds of violence, disasters and diseases. To prevent such risks from occurring, humans created various rituals. In regions where violence was common and the threat of disaster and disease was high, societies tended to emphasize strict ritualized behaviors, such as body-washing and sexual purity. Of course, not all of them were effective because they didn’t always understand what was causing the risks they were trying to control.
Most of the rituals just provide psychological comfort. Earlier this month, people around the world participated in one of humankind’s largest gathering to celebrate the New Year. The rituals included fireworks, gifts as well as some practices unique to specific cultures, such as cooking black-eyed peas and greens in the southeastern United States, or eating a grape with each midnight clock strike in Spain. In the face of uncertainty, such rituals give the participants some kind of control, which helps boost confidence and reduce anxiety.
However, the variety of rituals can also separate people, particularly when the valued practices of one culture strike another as strange and can not be clearly explained. “So here’s the surprising lesson we have to learn from such seemingly senseless rituals: Do in Rome as the Romans do since working isn’t the real point,” concludes Dimitris Xygalatas.
28 What does the underlined word “bizarre” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Difficult. B. Strange. C. Wonderful. D. Effective.
29. Which ritual just provides psychological comfort
A. Stressing pure sexual relationship. B. Practising goose steps in the army.
C. Eating grapes on New Year’s Eve. D. Washing hands before religious rituals.
30. What is Dimitris Xygalatas’ advice concerning the rituals
A. Respecting them. B. Just following the effective ones.
C. Reducing the variety. D. Introducing better replacements.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To argue against Dimitris Xygalatas. B. To review a recently published book.
C. To show the side effects of some rituals. D. To explain the origins and impacts of rituals.
D
Rapid deforestation (毁林) of the Amazon rainforest could influence the temperature and precipitation (降水,降水量) over the Tibetan plateau 15, 000 kilometers away.
Saini Yang at Beijing Normal University in China and her colleagues analyzed global climatological data from 1979 to 2019 to identify relations in temperature and precipitation between the Amazon rainforest and other areas. Such links are called “teleconnection1s”. They focused on the Amazon rainforest in particular because of its significance as a major carbon sink and as a climatic “tipping point” (爆发点) that could see forest turn to savannah (稀树草原) beyond a certain threshold (阈,界) of warming and human-driven deforestation.
The researchers found that since 1979, warm temperatures in the Amazon rainforest were related to warm temperatures over the Tibetan plateau and the West Antarctic ice sheet; more precipitation in the Amazon rainforest was associated with less precipitation in those regions. By analyzing changing temperatures in the regions between the Amazon rainforest and those distant areas, they were also able to trace the path through which energy or materials such as black carbon released in forest fires might spread through the atmosphere. Their analysis showed the route remained consistent under different future warming scenarios.
The collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet is a known tipping point. Melting snow on the Tibetan plateau is not, but the region is warming more rapidly than much of the rest of the globe, and changes to snow and ice there could have consequences for ecosystems and the billions of people that rely on its snowmelt for water, says Yang.
Victor Brovkin at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Germany says the teleconnections are an interesting find, but is skeptical that variability in the Amazon rainforest causes the changes elsewhere. He says the Amazon rainforest is too small an area to overcome the influence of the tropical oceans and the researchers don’t present a physical mechanism to explain any influence.
If the Amazon rainforest does have an influence on these regions, however, it could mean there is à higher risk that the Amazon rainforest tipping point might set others off, says Jonathan Donges-at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. “It adds an additional potential domino (多米诺骨牌) that can fall. ”
32. Why was the Amazon rainforest the focus for Saini Yang’s research
A. Because it played a role as a main carbon sink.
B. Because it was the most important carbon sink.
C. Because it was very likely to turn to savannah.
D. Because it was at a high risk of becoming a climatic “tipping point”.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The benefits of the research.
B. The findings of the research.
C. The means of analyzing the data.
D. The results of the Amazon rainforest being deforested.
34. Which of the following points may Saini Yang agree with
A. The temperature of the Tibetan plateau changes the fastest.
B. The variability in the Amazon rainforest may not lead to changes elsewhere.
C. The more the Amazon rainforest rains, the less rainfall the Tibetan plateau may have.
D. The consequences of the collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet are little-known.
35. What can we learn about the Amazon rainforest from the last two paragraphs
A. Teleconnections have kept the researchers interested for a long time.
B. The Amazon rainforest tipping point is likely to set off those of other areas.
C. The findings of the research on the Amazon rainforest are controversial.
D. The Amazon rainforest is large enough to remove the influence of the tropical oceans.

The doctor said he had seriously broken his leg and would stay at hospital for several weeks. When Tad went to visit him in the hospital, Charley was in a low mood, unwilling to talk to others.
When Charley got out of the hospital, Tad visited him a few times, chatting and playing video games with him, but things just were not the same. Charley was still in low spirits. Meanwhile, Tad made friends at school, boys who enjoyed the things he and Charley used to do. Still, he felt sad and guilty for not spending more time with Charley. He wanted to help and be the same good friend like before, but it was hard.
Charley came back to middle school in the fall, but he had a tough time. Tad helped him get to class on time by pushing his wheelchair, but sometimes, Charley had to find someone else if Tad was at ball practice, or he would be late.
One day Charley dropped his book. As he tried to lean(倾斜) down and pick it up, he fell out of his wheelchair. Tad and one of his classmates helped him back into his chair. Charley wasn’t hurt, but he was so embarrassed that he didn’t speak to anyone the rest of the day. Another time, Charley tried to get through the gym door, but it closed on him.
