A new United Nations(UN)report says one-fifth of the world's migratory(迁徙的)animals are at risk of disappearing. Animals that migrate move from one area to another at different times of the year.
The threats(威胁) the animals face include habitat loss, illegal hunting, pollution and natural disasters. Many kinds of migratory animals, including songbirds, sea turtles, whales, sharks and others, move to different environments as the seasons change.
The UN report says about 44 percent of migratory species around the world are decreasing in population. In addition, about one in five of 1,200 species watched by the UN are at risk of becoming endangered, or completely disappearing.
These are species that move around the globe. They move to feed and breed and also need sites to stop along the way. Any habitat loss or other threats during their trips can make the animal populations fall. "Migration is important to some species. If you cut the migration, you' re going to kill the species," said an expert.
The researchers examined existing data, including information from the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species. The list identifies wildlife across the world facing threats at present.
The report was presented at a meeting of the UN's Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Attendees of the gathering are examining suggestions for conservation measures. They are also working to identify new species of concern. Susan Lieberman is vice president of the international policy at the Wildlife Conservation Society, a non-governmental organization . She said, "One country alone cannot save any of these species. "
24. What does the UN report mainly show
A. Most animals are disappearing. B. Migratory species are increasing.
C. Migratory animals face some threats. D. Most species face some natural disasters.
25. What does migration mean to some species according to the expert in Paragraph 4
A. Losing their competitors. B. A matter of life and death.
C. A lack of food and movement. D. Destroying their habitats.
26 What can we infer from Susan Lieberman's words in Paragraph 6?
A. It is difficult to identify migratory animals.
B. It is impossible to protect migratory animals.
C. Rescuing migratory species depends on policies.
D. Rescuing migratory species requires global efforts.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Human Activities Are Affecting Wildlife
B. International Meetings Push Animal Protection
C. Some Migratory Animals Are at Risk of Extinction
D. Many More Animals Are Regarded as Endangered Species
C
Everybody hates rats. But in the areas where there are many earthquakes, rats will soon be man's friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue(营救)dogs. Why?Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives:the rat.
How does it work?First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal(信号).This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornel University, New York says," Robots' noses don't work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that." Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!
The "rat project" is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, "It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn't get to and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe." Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
28. Why are rats used in the new research project
A. They are smarter than dogs. B. They are more curious.
C. They can reach smaller spaces. D. They are more popular than dogs.
29. What is the purpose of the new research project
A. To make a comparison. B. To help rescue people.
C. To reduce the work of rescuers. D. To charge robots.
30. What's Julie Ryan's attitude towards "rat project"
A. Negative. B. Neutral C. Positive. D. Opposed.
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. The ways to rescue survivors.
B. Rats are man's new best friends.
C. Rats can be trained to help find survivors after the earthquake.
D. Man will be happy to see a rat in the building.

September 22,2024 marks the start of a new season. But what exactly you should call that season depends on where in the world you are. In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name:autumn. But if you go to America, you'll find that people use both "fall" and" autumn" when speaking about this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names. So what is it about the season that makes it so special?
According to Dictionary.com,"fall” isn't a modern nickname that followed the more traditional" autumn”. The two terms(术语)are actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other.
Before either word appeared in the dictionary, the season between summer and winter was known as" harvest". The word is of Germanic stock(日耳曼语系)and meant "picking" or" plucking",a nod to the act of gathering and keeping crops before winter.
In the 1500s,English speakers began calling the seasons separating the cold and warm months" fall of the leaf” or" spring of the leaf”,or" fall" and" spring" for short. Both terms were simple, but for some reason, only "spring" stayed in Britain. By the end of the 1600s,“autumn”,from the French word "autompne" and the Latin" autumnus",had overtaken" fall" as the standard British term for the third season Around the same time when England adopted "autumn ", the first-ever British American colonists were travelling to North America. With them, they brought the words "fall" and "autumn". Although the word "fall" fell out of fashion in England, it became a part of the local language by the time when America won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before winter is still a uniquely American behaviour.
32. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. "Fall” is unacceptable in America.
B. "Fall” is more commonly used in Britain.
C. Two words are used for the third season in America.
D.A season always comes on the same day every year.
33.What was the season between summer and winter called before "fall” and“ autumn” appeared?
A. Gathering. B. Picking. C. Spring. D. Harvest.
34.What does the author say about" spring" in Paragraph 4?
A. It was much easier. B. It has stayed in Britain since the 1500s.
C. It was first used in the 1600s. D. It was a French word.
35.What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To show how the season between summer and winter gets its English name.
B. To introduce the differences among languages in the world.
C. To introduce different seasons in America.
D. To share ways to learn English.

Hi, everyone. I'm Justin. Next, I will tell you about the three-day schedule.
Your schedule on the first day is carried out according to your arrival time. Your guide and driver will pick you up at the airport. If time allows, you will visit two popular attractions: the giant panda house in Chongqing Zoo, and Erling Park. Then they will take you to the hotel.
The next day, you will see one of the grandest rivers in China — the Yangtze River. You will enjoy a dancing party on the ship besides appreciating the Yangtze River scenery. You will also stop off to visit a village. There is an ancient temple built in the Qing Dynasty.
On the last day, you will cruise across the Three Gorges section. The scenery is quite graceful, so don't forget to get your camera prepared. You will learn to do taichi on the deck this day. The rest of the time is up to you. The White Emperor City is a good choice. If you are interested in Chinese calligraphy, the carved characters on the cliffs may be an interesting attraction for you.
