One day, as Nelly sorted through vegetable leftovers, especially corn husks (外壳) from her family kitchen,她 noticed their soft feel and structure. What if these weren’t just waste, but raw material for something beautiful Her first doll was an experiment. Using dried corn husks for the body and silky threads from corn cores for the hair, she built a tiny figure, dressed it in layered leaves, and painted on a face.
Word soon spread. Visitors to her flower shop admired the dolls, often mistaking them for handicrafts. Encouraged by the response, Nelly began taking custom orders. Each doll was handmade, unique, and reflected her evolving technique. Today, she operates from a small studio space where she continues to handcraft these dolls to order. With no formal art training, she has taught herself how to subtilize natural materials, dry them for durability, and combine them with decorative elements like seeds, flowers, and leaves.
Crafting one doll takes several days. First, the vegetable waste is carefully sorted, washed, and sun-dried. Nelly uses the husks to form the body, folding and folding them into shape. The corn milk is woven into hair, while dried flowers form necklaces or skirts. A final touch of paint brings out facial features, personality, and character. No two dolls are alike, and that’s exactly how Nelly likes it.
Nelly’s journey hasn’t gone unnoticed. Her craft is now inspiring women in neighboring villages to explore similar ideas with plant waste, encouraging entrepreneurship at it grassroots level. In a region where economic opportunities can be limited, her model of self-employment, based on sustainable practices, is quietly empowering women to earn from their own homes, using nothing but kitchen scraps and creative instinct.

Labubu, a bug-eyed, eel-like creature with jagged teeth, has evolved from a picture book character into a global pop culture obsession. Created in 2015 by Hong Kong illustrator Kasing Lung for a book series inspired by Nordic mythology, the character is now marketed by the Chinese retail giant Pop Mart. Labubu, described as a kind-hearted but clumsy elvish (淘气的) girl, has become a favorite of celebrities and the star of millions of online videos.
The toy’s fast rise began in 2019 when Pop Mart licensed the characters for “blind box” collections. These sealed, mystery packages created an addictive treasure-hunt dynamic. The craze exploded after some celebrities showcased their collections, turning the dolls into fashion accessories (配饰)
This celebrity support fueled a massive social media excitement. The hashtag “labubu” has been used in over a million online posts featuring fans unboxing their toys, creating inspired fashion looks, and even engaging in cosplay. The toy has become a collectable style symbol and a status-defining accessory, with fans hanging them from handbags, backpacks, and car mirrors.
With demand far outpacing supply, official Pop Mart stores often have empty shelves. This shortage has created a booming and profitable retail market. Limited-edition Labubu dolls, originally priced around $20-$30, are now being listed for thousands of dollars on sites like eBay.
The phenomenon mirrors other viral product crazes like the Stanley Cup, drawing criticism for promoting overconsumption. Many online critics suggest that buyers are motivated more by trending advertisements than a genuine appreciation for the toy, pointing to mass buying by resellers as proof.

Lots of people look like their dogs. It turns out that there’s actual science to support it. A recent global review of 15 studies suggests that people and their pets look and act similar. In several experiments, volunteers scored high at matching pictures of dogs and their owners. Experts suspect people pick dogs that look like them or reject them in some way. For example, one study found women often preferred dogs with ears similar in length to their hair.
The review also showed dogs and owners share similar personalities, and that their temperaments (气质) appear to grow more alike as the years pass. It offers different theories for this. One idea is that owners could be drawn to dogs that are like them. Another holds that over time the pair may regulate each other’s emotions, or learn by observing and imitating (模仿) one another.
After all, the relationships we build with our dogs can be long and meaningful. Review leader Yana Bender, a doctoral researcher in the Dog Studies Research Group in Jena, Germany, comments that dogs and their owners share a very close relationship comparable to many human relationships.
Humans’ influence on their dogs comes as no surprise to Borbala, who studies dog behavior in Hungary. She estimates that while about a third of a dog’s personality is genetic (遗传的), the remaining two-thirds is influenced by its environment, which means that if your dog has been with you from puppyhood, you occupy a place of enormous influence in its world. Dogs are deeply attached to us. Like parents raising a child, pet owners can have a powerful influence over their dogs, Borbala explains. For instance, “if there is a truck coming and it’s very loud, then the dog will look back at the owner. If the owner doesn’t care, then the dog will learn not to care,” she says.
Bender hopes her study will help people build a deeper understanding of dogs, particularly those like search and rescue, police, and service animals that work in roles-vital to public safety.
32. What does the recent global review show in paragraph 1
A. Dog owners train dogs to imitate them. B. People adopt dogs looking like them.
C. People are good at identifying healthy dogs. D. Dogs and their owners are born to look similar.
33. Why do the dogs and owners show similar personalities
A. Their relationships are like human ones.
B. Their personalities are genetically similar.
C. They probably influence each other’s emotions.
D. They may grow alike in appearance as the years pass.
34. What does Borbala suggest about a dog’s personality
A. It’s mostly determined by its genes. B. It remains stable after its puppyhood.
C. It’s independent of human interaction. D. It can be affected by the environment.
35. What is Render’s expectation of her study
A. To help understand working dogs better. B. To make dogs to look after people.
C. To encourage people to adopt pet dogs. D. To raise people’s awareness of public safety.

The forest took me right in. One moment, I was running after fireflies as the sky got dark. The next, everything turned black. The trees seemed to grow taller than before. Their branches were like thin fingers, blocking out the stars.
I held my small lantern light. Its weak light was the only thing keeping the dark away. I heard the sound made by an owl in the tree. I stopped still, my heart beating fast. I was afraid of that sound. I turned around quickly, trying to see through the dark trees. “Mom Dad ” I called.
Only the leaves made a soft noise. I knew I had walked too far. The laughter of my parents and sister was gone. I couldn’t see the warm light of the campfire, either. Now, all I could smell was the wet forest. I turned around slowly, but every direction looked the same. I was lost. “Stay calm,” I whispered to myself. I remembered my dad saying those words.
But when the wind blew again, I felt like a thousand eyes were watching me. I looked around again. All I saw was the dark night. Tears filled my eyes, but I wiped them away. “You’re 10 years old, not a baby,” I told myself. I thought about my last fight with my sister. Her bike had a flat tire, so she made mine to her friend’s house. Now I felt bad about it.
Suddenly, something moved. I jumped up from the log I’d been sitting on. A raccoon(浣熊) ran into the lantern’s light. I held my breath. The raccoon stopped, looked at me, and ran away. I sat there and cried. Then I heard a sound and froze. The crunch (碎裂声) of dry leaves got closer. It sounded bigger than the raccoon. “A bear,” I thought. “t will kill me.” I wished I was safe at home. I wanted to run, but I knew bears were faster than people.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
