English is an excellent language to learn, whether it’s for business, travel or personal reasons. Here are some important ways to improve your spoken English.
When you have time to speak, just try your best to practice. Don’t wait until you “feel more comfortable” speaking in English, so start speaking English today. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your language skills improve. Find a native English speaker who is willing to spend some time speaking English with you—you may be able to offer them a language exchange, where they spend 30 minutes speaking English with you and you spend 30 minutes speaking your native language with them.
Even if you have a good knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary, native English speakers may find it’s very difficult to understand if you don’t work on your pronunciation. Correct , clear pronunciation is necessary if you really want to improve your English. Listen closely to how native English speakers pronounce certain words and sounds and do your best to copy them.
The wider your vocabulary and the more English phrases you learn, the easier speaking English will become. Once you have learned a new word or phrase, you should make an effort to use it in a sentence—this is the best way to keep it in mind. You should also start a notebook of phrases that English speakers use all the time.
Another great way to add some more English conversation into your weekly practice is to sign up for a class of discussion group. Attending an English class is a great way to pay attention to some of the more formal aspects of speaking English. A class will teach you the correct way of speaking. Attending a discussion group is a more informal and relaxed way of learning English, where the emphasis(重点) is more on communication and relationship building than on speaking “correct” English.

When I was ten years old, I went to the US to visit some family friends. We travelled all the way from California to Las Vegas. I noticed something funny about the way everyone spoke English. I was thinking, “This is the way they speak in films!”
At the beginning of the holiday, one of my friends asked me if I wanted to order “French fries”.I couldn't imagine what French fries were. What was fried and French ! Snails Cheese She was amazed that I had never tried them and she ordered a portion for us to share. When the waiter brought us some chips, I asked her where the French fries were. She pointed to the plate of chips! Later that week she said she was going to buy some “chips” from the supermarket. She came out with a packet of crisps!
During that holiday we were also offered “biscuits and gravy” for our lunch. This was a very strange idea to me, because in England biscuits are sweet. Gravy is a salty, meat-based sauce. I later realised that “biscuits” in America are savoury snacks. What we call “biscuits”, they call “cookies”.
One day, I saw an “eggplant” pizza on the menu in a restaurant! Eggs do not grow on plants, I thought. What on earth could an “eggplant” be Something eggy and leafy My dad ordered this pizza and it was covered in aubergines. I asked him where the “eggplant” was. He laughed and pointed to the aubergines. He told me, “They call this ‘eggplant’ in America!”
Although the same “language” may be spoken in different countries, there are likely to be many differences, not just in vocabulary but also in spelling, grammar and pronunciation! I think part of the excitement of learning a language is discovering the differences in how it is spoken in different places.

D.Confused.

B.High-end restaurants.
C.Food and tradition.

It is often said that if we dream in a foreign language, it's a sign that we are making progress in learning that language. But is it true
Before we can look at multilingual (说多种语言的) dreams, first we need to look at sleep. The link between sleep and language can be applied to how we learn any language, including our mother tongue. Even adults still learn about one new word every two days in their first language, but, if we are going to have a firm grasp of that new word, we need to link it to our existing knowledge.“In order to do that, we need to have some sleep,” says Gareth Gaskell, a psychology professor at the University of York.
It's during sleep that the integration of old and new knowledge happens. At night, one part of our brain—the hippocampus—takes whatever new information it got in the day, and passes it on to other parts of the brain to be stored. The role that dreams play in this night-time learning process is still being studied, but it's entirely possible that during multilingual dreams, the brain is trying to connect two languages, according to Marc Züst, researcher at the University Hospital of Old Age Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Switzerland.
So having multilingual dreams could mean that our brain is trying to master a new word or phrase, but it could also have an emotional significance. Danuta Barker, a professor of psycholinguistics (心理语言学) at the University of Silesia in Poland, suggests that multilingual dreams can express fears and desires around learning a foreign language, including the wish to be a native-like speaker or to be accepted within a certain community.
We clearly still have a lot to learn about multilingual dreams, but one thing seems certain: If you're trying to learn a new language, you should definitely sleep on it.
12. Which of the following does Gareth agree with
A.Adults are better at learning.
B.Sleeping can help understand new words.
C.Our existing knowledge is from dreams.
D.Multilingual dreams have nothing to do with progress.
13. What does the underlined word “integration” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Method.
B.Form.
C.Combination.
D.Reflection.
14. What is the function of the hippocampus
A.Studying the role of the dream.
B.Analysing the learning process.
C.Developing the new area of the brain.
D.Absorbing and delivering information.
15. What's the main idea of the passage
A.Why we learn a foreign language in the dream.
B.Learning languages is completely from sleeping.
C.Sleeping plays an important part in the development of brains.
D.How multilingual dreams are connected to language learning.

第二节 语法填空 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入一个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Dear editor,
How are you I am Michael, a senior English teacher in Linchuan No. 1 Middle School in Jiangxi Province. This letter is written to ask for your opinion.
The other day, I met with a multiple choice exercise. The teachers argued heatedly with 36 we met. Unfortunately, neither side could convince the other after a fairly longtime argument. There is no doubt 37 the reference answer C is correct. But I don’t think 38 it is the only answer to this sentence. Personally, I do think A is also a reasonable choice.
What puzzles me is 39 we should deal with so many multiple choice exercises. But being a teacher, you know, it’s very important and necessary to make it clear to students which answer is correct, 40 is more proper, and which is the best one since they keep asking why and why. I can think of many cases 41 students obviously know a lot of English words and expressions but can’t write a good essay or express themselves freely.
In my personal opinion, what I think is 42 multiple choice test with more than 75 percent of the total scores in college entrance examination is not a very good and effective testing method. Instead, more subjective testing forms can depend on 43 he or she really knows or not. I don’t know 44 more subjective testing forms will come up in NMET. Do you think so
I am looking forward to your authoritative opinion. And if you can tell me 45 we can improve our English both in papers and abilities, I will be very much appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Michael Liao

At dinner, Dad accidentally dropped his favorite blue tie into his soup bowl. The tie was ruined. I suddenly knew what to get Dad for Father’s Day!
“How much does a tie cost ” I asked Mom the next morning.
“Depends,” she said.“ Some can cost twenty dollars. Do you have enough money. Carter ”
“No, ” I said sadly.
When I got to my room to change into my school clothes I noticed a hole in my shirt.
“Mom, I need you to sew(缝补) my shirt, I said loudly, rushing out the door to the school bus.
At school I picked at the hole in my shirt. I thought about how I could come up with enough money to buy a tie. I took a deep sigh, and played with the hold some more. As the hole grew in size, an idea sprung into my mind.
After coming home from school, I dug through my closet trying to find other worn clothes.
“Mom! "I yelled down the hall heading towards her.
Can I cut these clothes up to make Dad a patchwork(拼缝) tie for Father’s Day ” I pointed out the holes to Mom.
“ I guess,” he said.
“And,” I added, “Can you show me how to sew and make tiny stitches(针脚) ”
“Yes, Carter. Let s start now before Dad gets home.” Mom said, heading for her sewing supplies.
I followed Moms instructions and started making a patchwork tie. I gently pressed my foot on the foot pedal(缝纫机脚踏板) . Suddenly, the needle stopped and the machine made a horrible sound. “No!” I said.

“ Forget it! I cant do this!” I cried and went to my room. After sitting in my room for a while, I realized that if I wanted to give Dad a Father’s Day gift, I would have to learn to sew or at least keep trying. Every day after school, I would try, and try, and try. Finally, I was able to work the machine with Mom’s continued help. Although my first stitches were big and far apart, I grew better and better and my stitches finally became closer together and looked nice.
On Fathers Day I handed Dad a small box. He tore the wrapping paper off and opened the box. “Wow! This is great, Carter!” he said, holding up the patchwork tie. “I remember that shirt of yours,” Dad said, pointing out the patches. “Thank you very much.” Dad’s hug was big and warm. “I’ll be sure to take this off when I eat soup.” he said, and we both laughed.
