Eighteen miles into the walk, both of my legs screamed. I was a few months into training for a 30-mile walking challenge to celebrate the final year of my Ph. D., and now my carefully laid plans seemed on shaky ground. The setback came on top of bad news on another front: my job hunt. I applied to positions broadly, confident I would land something soon. But the rejections started to roll in. In both cases I would soon have to make a choice: Should I stay the course, or adjust my plans
Looking for a way to take my mind off the stresses of finishing my Ph. D. and the job search, I decided to organize a 30-mile walking challenge. I’d ease the burden of long hours working on thesis chapters and job applications by being out in the countryside, among the members of the walking group I had joined a year ago. Soon, though, I was finding I had less time to train. I pushed myself harder than I should have, setting the stage for my leg injury.
My professional prospects weren’t looking any better. And my injury only worsened my mood. For months I stuck doggedly to my previously laid plans — but maybe it was time to try a new path.
I previously considered government jobs but had been discouraged by the complicated application process, very different from that at private companies. But the employment policies seemed friendly toward those undertaking career transitions, and the work seemed in line with my career goals. I decided to give it a try, learning new vocabulary s to explain how my academic experience qualified me for the jobs — and was excited to get interviews, and eventually offers, for two different positions. The weight I had felt for months finally lifted.
At the same time, I was still struggling with my walk plans. With the stress of my job search behind me, I learned I could find satisfaction by revising my goal: a shortened walk of 14 miles, a distance I could manage comfortably.
One month later, I successfully defended my thesis and started my new job.

Do mosquitoes show a preference for specific individuals Perhaps — but the reason these winged pests are drawn to some people more than others isn’t determined by a single factor, and researchers have yet to reach an agreement. Scientific studies indicate that a range of elements can make you more palatable to mosquitoes: the microbiota on your skin, the carbon dioxide released in your breath, and even the color of your clothing (shades like red, orange, and black are particularly attractive to them). Ultimately, most of the variation in mosquito preference can be attributed to two key factors: natural body smell and genetic makeup.
Only female mosquitoes bite humans. They require a “blood meal” to obtain proteins necessary for egg production. To locate their prey, female mosquitoes rely on their antennae (触角) and palps — small organs between the antennae — to detect carbon dioxide and odors. This explains why people with a high metabolic (新陈代谢) rate, such as pregnant women, those engaged in physical activity, or individuals who have consumed alcohol, tend to be more attractive to mosquitoes.
The connection between blood type and mosquito preference remains a matter of debate. A 2019 study revealed that the primary mosquito species responsible for transmitting dengue virus showed a stronger preference for people with type O blood compared to those with other blood types. However, other research points out that experimental and laboratory data on whether blood type makes a person more or less appealing to mosquitoes have led to extensive speculation, but the scientifie evidence is conflicting. Instead, the researchers emphasize that the chance of being a “mosquito magnet” is more closely linked to skin odor and microbiota (微生物群) than to blood type.
28. The underlined word “palatable” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. accessible B. desirable C. adaptable D. noticeable
29. Which of the following is a confirmed factor influencing mosquito preference
A. Clothing material. B. Genetic characteristics. C. breath frequency. D. Blood thickness.
30. Which person is most likely to attract mosquitoes
A. A person who just finished a 5 km run. B. A person who enjoys eating sweet snacks.
C. A person who often travels to cold regions. D. A person with a low metabolic rate.
31. What can be concluded from the last two paragraphs
A. Blood types’ influence on mosquitoes has been confirmed.
B. The factors determining mosquito preference are not fully clarified.
C. People with type O blood are the most attractive to all mosquitoes.
D. Skin microbiota is the only factor of being a “mosquito magnet”.
D
A self- driving taxi operated by a Chinese tech giant recently hit a passer-by crossing against a traffic light in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, sparking heated discussions on the challenges and limitations facing autonomous driving technology, especially in complex circumstances.
Zhang Xiang, an auto sector researcher at North China University of Technology, said that the incident in Wuhan indicates that self-driving technology has progressed significantly over the past few years, but it still encounters difficulties under ever-changing road conditions and has some limitations when dealing with unconventional behavior, such as motorists or passers-by violating traffic rules. There are still some obstacles to integrating the self-driving vehicles into the existing road traffic safety management system, as the legal duties of relevant subjects involving autonomous vehicles have not been clarified under current laws and regulations.
Meanwhile, the commercial application of robotaxis in more cities across the country has raised concerns about employment, as taxi drivers are worried about losing their jobs due to intense competition from driverless ride-hailing vehicles, industry experts said. So far, more than 20 cities nationwide have introduced policies supporting autonomous driving tests, with more than 60 enterprises having obtained self- driving test licenses.
Nevertheless, some believe that people only prefer to experience this emerging technology, and the number of robotaxis on the road is still far smaller than those of taxis. It is also noted that the pressure on taxi drivers mainly comes from fierce competition between private ride- hailing cars and traditional taxis, and that the autonomous driving vehicles will not have a serious impact on the job market or replace human drivers in the short term.
Despite the challenges, the development of self-driving industry will strengthen the intelligent transformation of auto industry and speed the construction of vehicle-road coordination systems, which support the transfer of information from vehicles to roadway networks as a way to improve traffic efficiency.
According to research company BloombergNEF’s “Electric Vehicle Outlook” report, China will operate the world’s largest robotaxi fleet of about 12 million self-driving vehicles by 2040, followed by the United States with around 7 million such vehicles.
32. According to the passage, how many firms have acquired self-driving test permits in China
A. More than 20 B. More than 60 C. About 12 million D. Around 7 million
33. The word “coordination” in paragraph 5 most probably means ________.
A. competition B. separation C. cooperation D. replacement
34. What can be inferred from the passage about the current state of self-driving technology
A. It has completely overcome all challenges in complex road conditions.
B It still faces difficulties in dealing with unpredictable human behavior on roads.
C. It has been fully integrated into the existing traffic management system.
D. It is already safer than human drivers in all circumstances.
35. What is the main purpose of this passage
A. To criticize the safety issues of self-driving technology
B. To promote the use of robotaxis in Chinese cities
C. To discuss the challenges and prospects of self-driving technology
D. To compare self-driving development in China and the US

One morning, Ann’s neighbor Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. She asked Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog and she planned to find its owner. Ann agreed, but she said that she could watch it only for the day because she needed to take care of her son. At the time, her son Thomas was 10 years old, who was recovering from a heart operation.
Later, Tracy took photos of the dog, printed off 400 FOUND fliers, put them in mailboxes and began to find the dog’s owner. Meanwhile, Ann bought some pet supplies, warning her son not to fall in love with the dog. However, her son was filled with excitement as he knew that his mother got a dog back home. He planned to provide the dog with some food everyday.
Four days later, Ann and her son were still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. During the four days, they took care of the dog carefully, provided some food, took a shower and played with it, and they had already become the best friends.
The evening of the fifth day, when Ann arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the door and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys’ room where Ann found Thomas suffering from a heart attack. Riley ran over to Thomas, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him, the dog went silent.
The doctor said if it hadn’t come to get his mother in time, Thomas would have died. Luckily, with the doctor’s help, Thomas could go home tomorrow morning.
“Mum, can we keep it if we can’t find its owner Even we can ask for permission if we find the owner,” Thomas asked his mother when they came back home.
“Well, since no one has called to claim it, we decide to keep it,” his mother replied. Hearing that, Thomas was excited.
