I even stayed on a private island with its very own lighthouse, which was one of the coolest places I’ve ever visited and one of the most romantic places stay in Scotland.
Cairngorms National Park
This is the largest national park in the UK so it’s another popular place to visit in Scotland and it’s no surprise why. It’s absolutely beautiful and there’s so much happening at the Cairngorms National Park! From skiing or meeting local reindeers, you’ll not go bored and you’ll be surrounded by beauty the entire time.

My cell phone rang while I was working on my computer. I looked at the phone and saw it was my 17-year-old son, Tom. I quickly picked it up. “Mom, I got a 71 on the test. I did it.” With those few words, I could feel my heart start to pound.
Living in New York State. Students cannot graduate from high school unless they pass at least five exams: one in English, one in science, two in history and one in math. For most students, who work hard, attend class, and do their homework like my son, it isn't that hard. But for Tom, who is dyslexic (朗读困难), it is such a real challenge that some teachers have feared he would never be able to even attempt, never mind achieve.
We were honest with him about his trouble, letting him know that there was nothing to be ashamed of. Some people learn differently. If he was willing to work, we would help him find a way to do as much as he could in his academic career. All that was standing in his way was this math test. He had taken it three times and did better each time, but he continued to fail. He was starting to get a bit tired of me saying this was a marathon not a sprint (冲刺). My heart broke each time we would get the failing results.
“Mom,thanks. I love you. Thanks for believing I could do this.”
For one of the few times in my life, I really had nothing left to say. For that one brief moment I knew, really, really, knew that everything we did to help our son achieve what he wanted was worth it.

Walking has long been thought of as one of the best exercises for whole health. This activity can strengthen your heart, lower your blood pressure, keep your bones strong and burn calories. When walking outside, you gain the extra benefits that come from spending time in nature, but it's not always possible to take your daily exercise outside. When the weather or other factors drive you indoors, consider a treadmill (跑步机) workout instead.
Treadmills are among the top three most popular pieces of equipment at US health clubs, according to the 2022 IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report. Before you jump on a treadmill and begin walking at your preferred pace, however, consider a workout where you change both the pace and incline (坡度), which can result in much more productive training.
For those who can change both their walking speed and the treadmill incline, fitness experts recommend some types of interval training, which involves repeatedly exchanging the intensity (强度) of your workout and/or the activities you're doing. Gillian Dalby, vice president of fitness at CAZ Training Club in Newport Beach, offered two easy possibilities.
Get on a treadmill and do one minute of walking, one minute of jogging and one minute of running for a total of 18 minutes by turns. "This keeps your mind busy, and it's an incredible way to build speed," Dalby said. Walk for one minute with no incline, one minute at a 4% incline and one minute at 8%, then repeat this sequence five times. If either workout is easy, double the time to 36 minutes or do both back-to-back.
"If your gym has both kinds of treadmills, try both out," Dalby said. "At the end of the day, what will keep you continuing with your workouts and stay enjoyable The more fun you have working out, the more likely you are to continue your fitness journey."
8. Why does the writer mention walking outside in paragraph 1
A. To advise readers to work out every day.
B. To explain the benefits of walking outside.
C. To sell a kind of fashionable fitness equipment.
D. To introduce walking on a treadmill to readers.
9. What does the underlined word "sequence" in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. The rule that a coach teaches. B. The result that is interesting.
C. The routine that works out effectively. D. The order in which actions happen.
10. Which of the following will Dalby agree with
A. Continuous workout leads to your high mood.
B. People should keep themselves active and happy all day.
C. Enjoying themselves will make people keep on exercising.
D. All gyms should be equipped with different kinds of treadmills.
11. Which is the best title for the text
A. What Benefits Can Treadmills Bring Humans
B. Does Walking Really Benefit People Greatly
C. How Many Types of Treadmills Are Popular at Health Clubs
D. How Can People Burn Calories by Exercising on a Treadmill
D
Whether it’s a cup of coffee or tea, many people look for a caffeine (咖啡因) fix to kick-start their day. During waking hours, caffeine helps improve concentration. But how does it influence sleep
“A person’s sleep is unique to his body type, health and age,” said Lauri Leadley, the founder of the Valley Sleep Center in Arizona. “Everyone is genetically (基因地) programmed to follow the rising and setting of the sun. But caffeine can break this natural sleep-wake habit, influencing sleep.”
According to a 2022 review, adenosine levels are higher at night, meaning people feel sleepy by bedtime. Having caffeine controls it, which makes it difficult for people to fall asleep. Caffeine also controls other chemicals produced in the body. “When we have caffeine during the day, by nighttime it causes a fall in melatonin (褪黑激素), something that improves sleep, which is one of the reasons why sleep is influenced,” said Dr. Peter Polos, a sleep medicine specialist.
“Once in the body, caffeine remains for several hours, taking about 6 hours for half of its influence to disappear,” said Leadley. A 2013 study divided people into three groups, with people drinking caffeine 6 hours, 3 hours or immediately before bedtime. Even those who stopped drinking 6 hours before bed had their sleep cut by a whole hour.
However, caffeine doesn’t just influence how long you sleep but how well you sleep. “Studies show caffeine cuts down slow-wave sleep, the period of deep, restful sleep that leaves us feeling lively in the morning,” Polos said. It’s a period of sleep that seems to play an important role in growth, memory, and disease prevention. Most adults spend 10% to 20% of sleep on slow-wave sleep.
However, the influence of caffeine on a person is subject to things including age and genes. One 2017 review in the Sleep Medicine Reviews suggests that people become more sensitive to caffeine as they get older, while differences between people of the same age could be related to genetic differences.
12. How does caffeine influence people’s sleep
A. By changing people’s genes. B. By increasing slow-wave sleep.
C. By cutting chemicals like melatonin. D. By righting people’s sleep-wake cycle.
13. Why does the author mention the 2013 study
A. To introduce a new idea. B. To back up Leadley’s argument.
C. To compare different studies. D. To show the bad influence of caffeine.
14. What can we infer about slow-wave sleep
A. It is important to human health.
B. It influences the length of sleep.
C. It takes up less and less of sleep time.
D. It can be increased by more daytime rest.
15. Which section of the newspaper is the text probably taken from

Niesha could not forget the way she froze in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today was Niesha’s turn. However, her hands shook so violently that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she did clearly not finish. He also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Roberts hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage ” Niesha nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha ”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class ” Momma asked. She set the timer (计时器) and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings (剪报) and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first-- I was not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”
