Koh Khai Nok

This year, I did something I’d never done — shopping at midnight on Black Friday after Thanksgiving. After all, you can get great deals online from the comfort of your bed over a hot cup of coffee. So why would I stand in traffic, cold weather, and crowds for a few bargains (特价商品)
For my teenagers, spending time with Mum is usually down on their list next to homework and picking up the dog waste. So, when they asked me to take them shopping at the mall at midnight on Black Friday, my first reaction (反应) was surely no! But my son, who usually runs the other way if I mention shopping, wanted me to take him shopping. On social media, reading has taken on new styles. Many readers now create colorful and detailed notes, known as marginalia (书页批注). These marks sometimes cover entire pages and may even match the color of a book’s cover. While some see this trend (趋势) as creative and personal, others question whether writing in books is a bad habit or a useful practice.
Yet marginalia are hardly a modern invention. From Leonardo da Vinci to modern writers, generations of readers have long left their thoughts in the margins. Such notes often provide valuable insights for later readers and occasionally reshape the understanding of the text. In recent years, bestselling novelist Ann Patchett released a special edition with notes of her novel Tom Lake to raise money for bookstores, showing how marginalia can generate cultural and financial value.
Scientists have also examined the phenomenon scientifically. A study in Frontiers in Psychology recorded brain activity and found that writing by hand uses more parts of the brain than typing. This suggests that the physical act of writing, including marginalia, deepens memory and comprehension. Maryanne Wolf at UCLA further argued that making notes enables readers to go beyond the author’s ideas and discover their own understanding.
In education, marginalia also plays a role. Turkish professor Demet Yayli observed that taking notes encourages deep reading, helps students clearly express their views, and strengthens their learner autonomy. With greater autonomy, students are able to make decisions in learning and take responsibility for their progress, rather than wait for directions. Although note styles may appear unusual — underlining every line of a favorite character or marking romantic passages — experts agree that as long as the practice aids comprehension, any style is acceptable. Writing in the margins, far from being harmful, can personalize texts and enrich intellectual engagement.

The Haenyeo are women from Jeju Island, South Korea. For centuries, they have made their living by diving (潜水) into the sea to harvest seafood like sea urchins and shellfish. Unlike other fishermen, they do not use oxygen (O ) tanks or modern devices (设备). Instead, they depend only on their lungs (肺), holding their breath for each dive.
Chris McKnight, an expert at the University of St. Andrews, said studying the Haenyeo is “as close as you get to studying a mermaid”. He and his team worked with seven divers, recording 1,786 dives. Special devices measured how long the women stayed underwater, how deep they went, and how much oxygen remained in their bodies.
The results were surprising. The women spent more time underwater than any other people ever studied — from one to five hours each day. Unlike other animals that usually show lower heart rates and oxygen levels while diving, the Haenyeo had faster heartbeats and little drop in oxygen. This may be because their dives were frequent but shallow, usually 3 to 15 feet deep, lasting about 11 seconds each.
What made their achievements even more amazing was their age: most Haenyeo were around 70 years old. This showed excellent health and strength. Researchers also found that these women could better control blood pressure and stand cold water. Study co-author Melissa Ilardo believed the Haenyeo may also be able to put up with high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), which usually makes people feel anxious.
“The Haenyeo’s ability to spend so much time underwater is not only a scientific wonder but also a cultural treasure. Their story shows how human tradition and biology can work together to create amazing skills,” said McKnight.
