Today, food delivery has become an important part of modern daily life. It fits easily into people’s daily lives with just a few taps on smartphones. But people hardly know this convenient service has a history of hundreds of years.
Experts say that basic dining services like today’s food delivery first appeared as early as the Han Dynasty. However, the clear term “food delivery” was first written down in the Song Dynasty. At first, this service was only for nobles, officials and rich people, and it showed their high social position. But as society became richer, this service slowly became a part of people’s daily lives and was widely used by common people.
The Song Dynasty witnessed the golden age of China’s takeout industry (行业). This lively scene is well described in the famous book A Dream of Splendour (《东京梦华录》). Bianjing, the capital of the Song Dynasty (now Kaifeng in Henan Province), had a busy food delivery market. Small restaurants on the streets and special restaurants sold many kinds of prepared dishes-from delicious fried dishes to nice pastries. They provided more convenience for those who didn’t feel like cooking at home.
Without modern tools to communicate, ordering food was much harder than today. Customers either went to restaurants themselves or asked others to go and place orders. They also told the restaurants the exact time and place to send the food. The people who delivered the food were called “Xianhan”. They walked through the busy streets to make sure the food arrived on time.
People wanted the food they delivered to stay warm and tasty. The smart people in the Song Dynasty invented “wenpan” to solve this problem. A wenpan was two plates put together, with an empty space between them. People poured hot water into this space, which kept the food on top warm. This was a simple but clever idea, and it showed how practical the Song people were.

(Ms. Frizzle has a magic school bus — it can get smaller; fly and dive into the wildest places.)
Scene 1
One morning, Ms. Frizzle came to class with a smoking volcano (火山) model. She announced excitedly, “Today, we’ll learn all about volcanoes — we’ll get into them to know how they work with our own eyes!”
Phoebe took out her notebook quickly, writing down notes as fast as she could. “Wait, the bus is making a strange noise. Is that normal ” she asked.
Before Ms. Frizzle could reply, the windows got foggy, making it hard to see through them.
Ms. Frizzle shouted, “Buckle up, everyone! The bus journey is starting!”
The bus got smaller and smaller. Soon, it was as tiny as a book, sitting on Tim’s desk.
“Let’s go inside a real volcano!” Ms. Frizzle was driving the tiny bus toward the volcano model.
Scene 2
The tiny bus flew into the volcano model. The air was hot and thick. The walls around them were dark rock, with some orange light shining.
Ralph pointed at them and asked, “Ms. Frizzle, what are those bright orange things They look like burning rocks!”
“Those are magma (岩浆). Magma is hot, soft rock deep under the Earth. When it comes out of the volcano, we call it lava (熔岩).” Ms. Frizzle explained.
Suddenly, the bus shook so hard that Dorothy’s backpack fell off her seat.
Carlos held his seat tightly and cried out, “What’s happening ”
“Don’t worry, Carlos. The volcano is shaking. It happens when magma moves under the ground. It’s a sign that the volcano might erupt (喷发) soon.” Ms. Frizzle said calmly.
Phoebe was writing some notes, “So volcanoes form when... how ”
“Great question, Phoebe. The Earth’s surface is made of big plates. When these plates push each other, the rock below turns into magma in this heat. Magma wants to get out, so it moves up through cracks (裂缝). That’s how volcanoes form!” Ms. Frizzle answered when driving the bus along a small path.
Scene 3
The bus reached the top of the volcano. The magma was rising fast, and its orange light got brighter and brighter.
“Hold on tight! The volcano is erupting. We need to leave now!” Ms. Frizzle shouted.
She pressed a button on the bus. The bus flew up quickly. Just as they got out, the hot red lava came out of the volcano, making a loud noise like a monster shouting.

What is a Budget
To put it simply a budget is a practical plan that helps us manage how we earn, save and spend our money wisely. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a leader in the government planning billions of yuan to keep the country running smoothly, or a middle school student working out how long to save for a new video game that costs around 400 yuan, the basic idea is the same: Making a budget is the best way to take control of your money and avoid waste.
How can a budget help me
Have you ever wondered why your monthly pocket money runs out in just two weeks Or regretted spending 70% of your birthday money on snacks and online game skins, only to find you can’t afford the sports shoes or storybooks you really wanted
▲ Research shows that when teenagers have the same income every week, those who use a budget can save 30% more each month than those who don’t. This shows that budgeting helps young people manage their money better, allowing them to reach saving goals — such as buying a Nintendo Switch, Nike Kobe sneakers, or a Giant bicycle. More importantly, learning budgeting is also good for students’ future. Studies show that people who learned to budget in their teens are 65% more likely to avoid debt (债务) in adulthood, when they have to pay for higher costs like rent, bills and supermarket shopping.
How do I make a budget
Get a pen and paper and start by writing down all your incomes. This could be your regular pocket money, or extra earnings for helping out with the housework each week. Add these up to get your total monthly incomes. Next, list your outgoings — the money you spend regularly. Maybe you buy a cup of milk tea every week or a new game DLC each month. Add these up to get your total monthly outgoings.
When you take your outgoings away from your incomes, you’ll see how much you have left to save or spend freely. It’s wise to save at least 20% of the money left, especially if you’re expecting to buy something special. Your budget will help you see how much you can save each week and how long it will take to reach your goal. You might then decide to spend less or think about ways to earn more so that you can reach your goal faster.
56. What is the purpose of making a budget according to the text
A. To help government leaders plan billions of yuan for the country.
B. To allow middle school students to save money for video games.
C. To control money and avoid waste through wise management.
D. To make sure people can make more money than they spend each month.
57. Which of the following can be put into ▲
A. Making a budget can help your money go further.
B. Saving money is an important habit for teenagers.
C. Managing daily cost well needs a lot of practice.
D. Buying expensive things often requires careful planning.
58. Which of the following is RIGHT according to paragraph 3

A “happy place” is something that brings you comfort, safety and happiness — you can be there in real life or just imagine it. It can be physical places like your bedroom, a nearby park or your grandma’s house; it can also be mental (精神的) spaces such as a peaceful beach you remember from childhood or a magical garden you dream up. No matter what it is, it helps you get away from stress, sadness or boredom and feel better again.
Scientist Frances Trussell says you can turn to your happy place whenever you need it. For example after arguing with your parents, you may feel angry; when you know your bad exam results, you may feel upset; or when your best friend misunderstands you, you may feel sad — these are all good times to go to your happy place. The best part is that it’s always there for you; you don’t have to go anywhere or change your plans to feel its calm.
Creating your own happy place is easy, and you can make it exactly the way you like. If it’s a physical space, you can set up a comfortable corner in your bedroom with cushions, a soft blanket, your favorite books or small gifts that matter to you. For a mental or imaginary happy place, first, you can pick up a happy moment from your memories — maybe a day at the park or a quiet night with family. Then, try to picture every detail (细节): what you saw, heard, smelled and felt. If you’re making up a new place, let your creativity run wild-add all the things that make you smile.
By making and using your happy place on purpose, you’ll feel better whenever life gets hard — and the more you use it, the more you will enjoy staying there.
A “happy place” is something that makes us ____84____. It can be in physical or mental form. Scientist Trussell suggests turning to it if needed. When ____85____, it’s the perfect time to go to our happy place. ____86____ by setting up a corner, or an imaginary one by using memories and creativity. Finally, the more we use this happy place, ____87____ it will be.

Dear Tina,
I am so happy to know that you are coming to Chongqing next week. Here are some basic Chinese customs to help you make a good impression.
When greeting people for the first time, it’s common to shake hands and say hello. As for sending gifts, choose something appropriate, like fruits or tea. Avoid giving a clock or chrysanthemums, as they have negative meanings in Chinese culture.
At the table, show your respect by following table manners. Eat with chopsticks but never point at others with them. Also, don’t speak with your mouth full of food. It’s considered impolite.
I hope these tips will be helpful. Enjoy your trip!
Yours,
Lin Yue
