Marion Sheppard felt sorry for herself when she began to lose her sight in her 40s. Since childhood, Sheppard had always been a keen dancer. But now she rarely left her Bronx apartment. She was afraid that, unable to see a stranger approaching, she would be knocked down on the streets. In fact, mostly, she worried about the way she would appear to the world. She wondered constantly, “What if people look at me differently, and treat me differently ”
After several months of grief and fear, Sheppard resolved to keep moving. Hard as it was, Sheppard forced herself to go out. She attended a social event for people with visual problems, and was shocked to find that not only did no one dance, but they barely moved. “Oh no!” she told herself. “That is not the way I want to live!” She bought a walking stick and named it Tyreek, which she had always planned on giving a son if she had one. Sheppard continued to work at her library job at The New York Times until her vision worsened in her 50s. And she kept moving and dancing. Sheppard was 61 when she attended a summer camp for the blind in 2008, where she taught her first line dancing class.
After that, she asked a Manhattan community center run by Visions if she could teach her class there, but she was told no and that it would be too dangerous for the students. Still, she persisted, and soon convinced the administrators to let her teach line dancing on a volunteer basis. Her classes proved to be so popular that in 2012, Visions hired her to be on staff. Sheppard was excited.
She was teaching over a dozen students dance steps. But Sheppard instructed her beloved students on far more than that. With constant encouragement, she also managed to make dignity and independence take root in them. In her classes, the students could truly be themselves.
24. Why was Sheppard unwilling to leave her apartment
A. She had a lot of housework to do.
B. She had to attend her son at home.
C. She was afraid of being looked down upon.
D. She was worried about getting involved in accidents.
25. How did Sheppard feel about her walking stick
A. She was often greatly embarrassed by it.
B. She regarded it as a temporary necessity.
C. She treated it simply as an ordinary tool.
D. She valued it as something special.
26. Why did the community center refuse Sheppard’s request at first
A. They didn’t have enough space for dance classes.
B. They were concerned about the students’ safety.
C. They didn’t believe Sheppard could teach well.
D. They thought dancing wasn’t suitable for blind people.
27. What did Sheppard’s students learn from her
A. Humor and patience. B. Intelligence and honesty.
C. Imagination and creativity. D. Self-respect and self-reliance.

In a clinical trial with 80 adults, a team of researchers found that sleep extension reduced energy intake and resulted in a negative energy balance in real-life settings among adults with overweight who habitually reduced their sleep duration The findings appear in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
Obesity is a major public health concern. Much evidence suggests that sleeping less than 7 hours per night on a regular basis is associated with adverse health results. Particularly, insufficient sleep duration has been increasingly recognized as an important factor for obesity. However, it remains unknown whether extending sleep duration can be an effective strategy for preventing obesity.
The clinical trial involved 80 adults aged 21 to 40 years with a body mass index (BMI) between 25.0 and 29.9, and habitual sleep duration of less than 6.5 hours per night. The study was conducted from November 1, 2014 to October 30, 2020. The participants were able to increase their sleep duration by an average of 1.2 hours per night after a personalized sleep counseling (咨询) session.
Overall, participants who increased their sleep duration were able to reduce their calorie intake by an average of 270 kcal per day — which would translate to roughly 12 kg of weight loss over three years if the effects were maintained over a long term.
Ultimately, the researchers hope to examine the underlying (潜在的) mechanisms that may explain these results, and believe their work should encourage new, larger studies on weight control to determine if extending sleep can support weight-loss programs and help prevent or reverse obesity.
“In our earlier work, we understood that sleep is important for appetite regulation,” Dr. Tasali said. “Now we’ve shown that in real life, without making any other lifestyle changes, you can extend your sleep and eat fewer calories. This could really help people trying to lose weight.”
28. What’s the new finding of the research
A. Sleep extension can lead to weight problems.
B. Extending sleep duration helps reduce caloric intake.
C. Controlling energy intake is the key to losing weight.
D. Overweight adults often decrease their sleep duration.
29. What’s the probable meaning of the underlined word “adverse” in paragraph 2
A. Harmful. B. Unique. C. Lasting. D. Apparent.
30. According to the text, the subject of the study ________.
A. usually slept 6.5 hours per night
B. were 80 adults of the similar age group
C. got advice on sleep tailored to themselves
D. were particularly chosen from a certain place
31. What do researchers think of the study
A. Its results are hard to explain clearly.
B. It lays a foundation for further studies.
C. It’s unreliable with many factors ignored.
D. It has solved all the puzzles of researchers.
D
Voluntourism is a type of tourism in which travellers participate in volunteer work, usually for a charity or a non-profit. Most often, voluntourists travel for the specific purpose of volunteering in an organized way for specific causes, but others simply include volunteer aspects to a traditional vacation experience.
Much like sustainable tourism as a whole, the legitimacy (合法性) or success of a voluntourism program depends highly on how it is managed. When done the right way, it can help communities grow and truly provide benefits to a specific cause. But it’s up to the individual volunteer, too, who has the added responsibility of staying informed and setting their destinations up for success. Ken Budd, author of the award-winning memoir The Voluntourist, says that countless organizations around the world create lasting results. The writer, who volunteered in at least six countries, speaks for it, such as teaching English in a Costa Rican elementary school that relied on volunteers when they couldn’t afford teachers.
However, not all voluntourism programs are helping. A reporter for The New York Times wrote in 2016 about their experience with a group of people building a school in Haiti: “These people knew nothing about how to construct a building. Collectively they had spent thousands of dollars to fly here to do a job that Haitian bricklayers could have done far more quickly. Imagine how many classrooms might have been built if they had donated that money rather than spending it to fly down themselves. Perhaps those Haitian bricklayers could have found weeks of employment instead of being out of a job, at least for several days.”
If an organization can get free labor from an unskilled volunteer, they’re not spending money hiring locals to do the same work for a fee. In a poverty-stricken economy where residents are already struggling to find jobs, funds that go towards digging a well or building a school will have more of an impact if they stay within the local economy. Taking work from locals can prevent developing communities from self-establishment. Not to mention, volunteers who are untrained in whatever service they are providing can sometimes actually end up holding back progress.
32. How does the author introduce the topic “voluntourism”
A. By explaining its origin. B. By presenting its concept.
C. By discussing its classification. D. By describing his experience.
33. What helps guarantee the success of a voluntourism program according to the passage
A. The purpose and legitimacy of a program.
B. Participants’ previous voluntary experience.
C. The degree of involvement of each volunteer.
D. Proper control of the program and responsible volunteers.
34. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Voluntourists’ donations to their destinations.
B. The enthusiasm of people for rebuilding Haiti.
C. The invisible problem brought by voluntourists.
D. Voluntourists’ determination to make contributions.
35. What’s the author’s attitude to voluntourism
A. Objective. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Disapproving.

I never thought I had any natural talent when it came to music. Throughout my childhood, the fascinating world of music seemed like an impossible dream for me. I just showed no interest in singing songs or playing an instrument. However, my parents had a different plan for me. They insisted that I learn to play the piano when I was just six years old. Wanting to be a good daughter, I agreed to their wishes, even though deep down, I had no real interest in it. Never did I know that this decision would lead to an unexpected journey of self-discovery.
My piano teacher, Mrs. Johnson, was a kind and observant woman. She had a way of reading her students’ minds and understanding their true feelings. It didn’t take long for her to realize that my heart wasn’t fully absorbed in playing the piano. However, she continued to teach me patiently, hoping to stir a spark (火花) within me.
After about six months of lessons, Mrs. Johnson approached me with an unexpected request. She asked me to perform at the year-end concert she had organized for her students. I was surprised and terrified at the same time. The thought of playing in front of an audience was challenging, considering my lack of passion for the instrument. Nevertheless, I couldn’t refuse my teacher’s request, so I could only agree.
Given my limited experience, I decided to choose a fairly simple composition for the concert. In order to perform well, I practiced the same composition for an hour a day for the next two months, perfecting the notes (音符) and the rhythm. I wanted to ensure that, in spite of my doubts, I would at least be able to give a decent (体面的) performance.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
The day of the concert arrived, and I woke up with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

Paragraph 2:
To my surprise, the music flowed smoothly from my fingertips.

She bought a walking stick and named it Tyreek, which she had always planned on giving a son if she had one.
After that, she asked a Manhattan community center run by Visions if she could teach her class there, but she was told no and that it would be too dangerous for the students.(之后,她询问了由Visions运营的曼哈顿社区中心是否可以在那里教课,但她被告知不行,因为对学生来说太危险了。)

29. 答案:A
故选A。
30. 答案:C

When done the right way, it can help communities grow and truly provide benefits to a specific cause. But it’s up to the individual volunteer, too, who has the added responsibility of staying informed and setting their destinations up for success.(志愿者旅游项目的合法性或成功在很大程度上取决于它是如何管理的。
Imagine how many classrooms might have been built if they had donated that money rather than spending it to fly down themselves.(然而,并不是所有的公益旅游项目都有帮助。2016年,《纽约时报》的一名记者写了他在海地一群人建造学校的经历:"这些人对如何建造建筑一无所知。他们总共花了几千美元飞到这里来做一件海地砌砖工人本来可以快得多的工作。想象一下,如果他们把钱捐出来,而不是把钱花在自己的飞机上,可能会建多少教室。)可知,第三段主要讨论了公益旅游可能带来的看不见的问题。故选C。

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
The day of the concert arrived, and I woke up with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. As I sat in the dressing room, waiting for my turn to perform, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of uncertainty that lingered in the back of my mind. What if I made a mistake and embarrassed myself in front of everyone As the previous performer finished and the sound of applause echoed through the concert hall, Mrs. Johnson approached me with an encouraging smile. “You’ve worked hard for this moment,” she said softly. “Just go out there and let the music speak for you.” Her words resonated with me, and I took a deep breath, stepping onto the stage.
Paragraph 2:
To my surprise, the music flowed smoothly from my fingertips. As I played the first few notes, a sense of confidence began to wash over me. It was as if I had unlocked a hidden talent within myself that I never knew existed. The melody danced through the air, and every keystroke became an expression of my emotions. I felt a connection between the piano and myself, as if we were communicating through the language of music. Mrs. Johnson watched from the side with a proud smile. At that moment, I realized that talent is not something innate, but something that can be nurtured and discovered through passion and perseverance.
