Education is essential. It is equally important that all students have excellent educators in their life.
I ve reflected on the impact my teachers have had, and will continue to have, in my life. From Mr.
Bowker, who challenged me in math, to Mr. Bernsteen, my health teacher who taught me the value of
hard work, my teachers have helped shape the student I am today. But one of the teachers who left a last￣
ing impression on me was my summer school teacher, Mr. Davis, who impacted me beyond the class￣
room. He found time to connect with me on a personal level and talk to me after class. I felt like Mr. Da￣
vis cared about my academic success and was committed to setting an example of what s possible.
Mr. Davis could relate to what it was like to be a rising ninth-grade black male in today s society.
He taught me how to speak up confidently and share my ideas with others. When I would put my hand
down because I was unsure of my answer, Mr. Davis would immediately say, “No courage, no triumph.”
He never made me feel inadequate; he encouraged me to always pursue knowledge because he, too, was
learning every day. Mr. Davis helped me brave the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities.
I think having more black male teachers like Mr. Davis in the classroom could increase student suc￣
cess. They would share the background and experiences of many of their students and help build long-
lasting teacher - student relationships. But, unfortunately, as the student population becomes more
ethnically diverse, teachers in Nevada still are predominantly white. The numbers for black male teachers
are more discouraging. Just 2 percent of teachers nationwide are black men.
But you can help change the numbers. Whether you decide to study education in college or graduate
school, I hope more black males will consider teaching as a career. We students of color need more ex￣
amples of excellence and success in classrooms—examples who look like us.

One polar bear can leave roughly 300 kilograms of hunted animals for other creatures to feed on

During their yearly hunting peak, a polar bear kills approximately one ringed seal every four days,
amounting to roughly 1,000 kilograms of food annually. The bear consumes the majority of this mass,
leaving around 30% available for other animals to eat. With an estimated 26,000 polar bears across the
Arctic, these leftovers collectively sustain arctic foxes, seagulls, and occasionally snowy owls, or wolves.
“This vital food source would be completely inaccessible without polar bears,” emphasizes Pilfold.
He witnessed these interactions firsthand: foxes following polar bear tracks to find abandoned seal bodies,
and seagulls circling overhead in noisy groups, competing for small pieces of meat. He adds the leftovers
are “ rather important” for these animals, especially when other food is hard to find.
But the Arctic is warming, affecting polar bear populations and, in turn, their leftovers. “ It s difficult
to predict the effect that the decrease of polar bears carrion might have on other species,” Aars says.

Kevin DePaolo and Josh Nelson had been close friends for years. In DePaolo, Nelson saw a spirit,

stepped aside to rest and enjoy the perfect 18°C temperature while DePaolo continued to kneel, working

DePaolo sat up for a moment and turned away as he caught his breath. That s when he heard Nelson
yelling, “Look out!” DePaolo turned back and was shocked to find the stone was losing its balance and
rolling towards him, crashing into him and crushing his legs into the sand.

The New Year for me, especially when I was quite young, was more of a festival. I remember waiting almost the
entire year for the Christmas vacation and the subsequent New Year’s holiday. I also remember saving money and
keeping that for buying New Year cards, and that was the most beautiful memory of my childhood. Those small
envelopes in which I used to put those cards were sealed and labeled according to different friends. In fact, the
biggest and the best card was for my teacher, the second-best for my best friend, and the rest were for others,
including my brothers and sisters. I remember bringing home a bunch of New Year cards. That was a
childhood—completely innocent, untouched, and happy. Nowadays when I see those cards, I am reminded of my
childhood. The simple joys, the pure excitement, all come alive again. And as a way to hold on to that piece of my
past, I still buy one for myself. I hope many of you do. On this occasion we have arranged distribution of New
Year cards, chocolates, and flowers to everyone. Volunteers will go to you and pass you these little gifts, each one
a symbol of our good wishes for the New Year. Thank you for your listening.
