过去分词是非谓语动词的一种。从语法功能分析,过去分词兼有动词、形容词或副词的特性,可在句中充当定语、表语、宾语补足语或状语。过去分词通常与其逻辑主语之间存在动宾关系,表示被动或完成。
一、过去分词作定语的位置
1.前置定语
一般情况下,单个过去分词作前置定语,放在所修饰词之前。
Many used computers will be sold in this market.很多二手电脑将在这个市场出售。

(1)有些过去分词表示特定含义,单独作定语也放在被修饰的名词之后,如left(剩余的)、given(所给的)、concerned(有关的)等。
There were a couple of seats left at the back.
后面还剩几个位子。
(2)如果被修饰的词是指示代词those或something、everything、anything、nothing、nobody等不定代词,单个的过去分词作定语要放在这些词的后面。
He is one of those invited.

2.后置定语
过去分词短语作定语时往往作后置定语,放在所修饰词之后,它的作用相当于一个定语从句。

有些过去分词作定语既可前置也可后置,意义不变,但有些过去分词置于被修饰词前后的位置不同,则意义也不相同。

二、过去分词作定语的意义
1.及物动词的过去分词作定语,具有完成和被动两层含义。
①表示被动。
an honoured guest 一位受尊敬的客人
respected leaders受人尊敬的领导
②表示被动和完成。
the broken glass碎了的杯子
the question discussed yesterday昨天被讨论的问题
2.不及物动词的过去分词作定语,只表示动作的完成,无被动之意。

The Well That Changed the World

Two thousand dollars was a lot of money, but Ryan didn't give up . He was determined to help other children have clean water. “The British Schindler”: the life of Nicholas Winton
It is August 1939, and a group of frightened① children are boarding② a train at Prague's Wilson Station. Their heartbroken③ parents do not join them. Indeed, they fear they may never see their children again【1】. But they know that their children will live【2】. During World War Ⅱ, Winton served as an officer in Britain's Royal Air Force. He left the military in 1954. He then worked for international charities and for various companies.
