This summer, the youngest kid in the family left home for university. Gallagher finally had more time for herself. She put away her kids’ toys in a large box, because there were no other kids in the family playing with them anymore.
Christmas was drawing near. Gallagher had the idea to visit some nursing homes for Christmas. She called two places, asking if she could come and read Christmas stories to the seniors living there. They gladly welcomed her. And she didn’t arrive alone.
She gathered up all the stuffed toys (毛绒玩具) that she had bought for her kids over the years, and then prepared to bring them with her to one of the nursing homes. Arriving there, she handed them out to the seniors so that they could hold on to the soft friends while listening to the classic stories. The seniors were happy with the toys in their hands. Gallagher realized it was such a good idea to bring the toys here. When Gallagher went to gather the toys so that she could go to the next nursing home with them, no one wanted to give up their stuffed toys. They really didn’t want to give them back.
The toys had brought such joy that Gallagher decided to make this her Christmas tradition. She posted online, asking for more stuffed toys no longer needed. Local schools started holding toy drives, and finally she received about 250 a week during the holiday season. Toys arrived non-stop. In her first two years of collecting, Gallagher gathered more than 11,000 toys.
Gallagher takes the collected toys not just to senior nursing homes, but also to homes for elderly veterans (老兵). “Who would think that elderly veterans would want stuffed toys ” she says. “But they did. The toys took them back to when they were kids. Not only did they bring comfort, but they were conversation starters.”

7. Why did elderly veterans like receiving stuffed toys
A. To perfect their speaking skills. B. To comfort their grandchildren.

In the late afternoon, a drone (无人机) lifted gently into the sky. On its screen, elephants moved into sight, while a train could be seen far away traveling along the China-Laos Railway. It was another work day to watch the large species (物种) for Peng Jinfu, a wild elephant monitor (监督员) in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture.
Wild Asian elephants are a flagship species in China’s rainforests. They receive top-level national monitoring and protection and are recognized as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Thanks to strengthened protection efforts, their population in Yunnan — their primary living areas in China — has grown from 140 in 1976 to over 300 today.
Elephant monitors play a key role in improving the relationship between humans and wildlife. “They track elephant movements, not only warning villagers of likely danger areas but also providing valuable information for scientific research,” explained Zhou Chenhao, director of the Xishuangbanna Asian Elephant Protection and Management Center.
Peng spends his days tracking elephant activities, mapping safe travel areas for people, and creating warning videos shared on the Internet. “I used to track them on foot, but thick forests often prevented me from seeing elephants,” he recalled. “Now, drones allow me to watch many groups at the same time.”
Xishuangbanna has put many smart monitoring tools into use. Thanks to them, since 2022, over 35,000 warnings have been sent across the area, preventing more than 700 possible human-elephant conflicts. These technologies help scientific research too. X-ray cameras help us to study elephants’ movement areas and behavior, while drones provide information on moving paths. Protection efforts have developed from saving single animals to protecting the whole ecosystems, with cross-country protected areas between China and Laos enlarging habitat spaces.
As researcher Chen Fei noted, “We’ve turned from saving elephants to protecting more species in the future.” This mixture of technology and environmental wisdom is creating a new stage of co-living between humans and wildlife.
8. What does the underlined part “a flagship species” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to
A. A species of the largest size.
B. A species only found in China.
C. A species most monitored and protected.
D. A species used for scientific experiments.
9. What is a role of elephant monitors
A. Designing smart monitoring tools.
B. Telling people the possible danger.
C. Training elephants for performances.
D. Carrying out scientific research alone.
10. What can be inferred about the future of wildlife protection
A. Drones will be the only tool used.
B. Human-elephant conflicts will increase.
C. Protection efforts will focus on more species.
D Traditional methods will remain the most effective.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. How humans relate to animals.
B. The daily work of elephant monitors.
C. The history of elephant protection in China.
D. How technologies help protect Asian elephants.

A lunch break is an important part of the day. It’s a chance to regain energy by eating and maybe chatting with some friends. Since life is becoming busier, many people choose to buy lunch instead of bringing lunch from home. But this practice is not just costing money, there might be a cost in terms of damaging our planet too. Just a sandwich, and maybe a cake and coffee can produce at least three items of waste. Besides, the leftover food people throw away, which produces methane (甲烷) over time, is a bigger cause of climate change than plastics
No matter what causes the most damage, one solution is to eat packed lunches. It’s usually healthier and cheaper. It means you can eat the things you really want and make the quantity that you actually need. Of course, preparing your lunch is something to fit into your morning rush of getting ready for work, so if you haven’t got time and have to buy lunch, you’re advised to take your own container to a shop and ask them to put your food in it. The idea of using reusable coffee cups which can hold hot drinks has already proved successful. So, this could be another step in the right direction. A trial in East Anglia showed that offering a 10% price reduction did encourage some customers to come prepared with their own lunch box. The problem with eating on the move is that you might want to carry your food in something that is one-off, so it’s a good idea to make sure it’s something that is recyclable (可再循环的).
I think if we give our lunch eating habits some deeper thought, we can all do our bit in helping reduce climate change and damage to our environment. That is something worth taking seriously.
12. Why do many people buy lunch rather than bring it from home
A. It is more time-saving. B. It offers more delicious food.
C. It is more environmentally friendly. D. It allows for more social connection.
13. What is the main reason for taking your own container when buying lunch
A. To keep the food hotter. B. To cut down on pollution.
C. To avoid paying extra money. D. To get a larger quantity of food.
14. What can we know from the East Anglia trial
A. Reusable things were not popular.
B. Most customers preferred packed food.
C. Shops were unwilling to reduce prices.
D. Encouragement with money was effective.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the idea of reconsidering lunch habits
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Supportive. D. Negative.

The Wilson family had been planning their summer road trip for months. John, a middle-aged designer, his wife Lisa, a teacher, and their two children, Emily and Jake, were expecting to go on the scenic roads of the Pacific Northwest. They packed their car, eager to explore the unknown world and create lasting memories.
“The open road is waiting for us!” John said as they set off on a sunny morning. Emily, 12, focused on her camera, while Jake, 10, enjoyed himself with a travel board game. Lisa, sitting beside John, played their favorite road trip music, singing along with her husband. Everything seemed perfect.
However, their adventure took a turn in the afternoon. As they drove through a mountain pass, a sudden storm rolled in. Heavy rain and strong winds made the road hard, and they could hardly see the road. Worse still, their car’s engine died. Stuck in the heavy rain, the family watched helplessly as their car refused to restart.
“We can’t move,” Lisa said, her voice filled with worry. Emily hugged her camera close, and Jake looked scared. John tried to stay calm, checking the phone for signal, but there was none. Hours passed, and it was cold in the car. Lisa kept the children warm with blankets. “We’ll be okay,” John said, though his own anxiety grew.
Just as hope seemed to disappear, a soft light appeared in the distance. An old pickup truck slowly got close, its headlights cutting through the rain. A middle-aged man got off the truck, wearing a raincoat and a kind smile. “Need a hand ” he asked, offering help with kindness. His name was Mr. Carter, a local farmer who lived nearby. He quickly checked the situation, saying he could pull their car to his farmhouse to protect them from the rain.

My Journey of Learning English
Learning English has been a journey of challenges and rewards for me.
At first, I struggled with grammar and pronunciation. However, I made progress when I used good methods — listening to English songs and reading simplified novels. I also practiced writing short passages and received feedback from my teacher. These efforts paid off.
The biggest reward is the ability to communicate confidently with English speakers. English has not only improved my academic performance but also opened doors to diverse cultures. Put your heart into learning English, and you’ll find it fruitful!

【答案】
Thankfully, the family accepted. Thanks to Mr. Carter’s help, the family managed to get to Mr. Carter’s farmhouse. It was comfortable, with a warm fireplace and homemade cookies waiting. Mr. Carter shared stories of his own adventures, easing the family’s tension. The next morning, the rain stopped. Mr. Carter arranged for a repairman to fix the car. As the family prepared to leave, Lisa said to Mr. Carter, “Thank you for being our guardian angel.” Mr. Carter smiled, “Helping others is what makes life rich.”
After waving good-bye, the family drove away. They watched the farmhouse getting farther and farther behind, warmth filling their hearts. They went on with their journey ahead, singing songs happily. The road ahead seemed brighter, and Emily took pictures of the sun breaking through the clouds. The Wilsons knew this experience would be remembered not just for the sights, but for the warmth of a stranger’s heart. They realized the trip had taught them more than planned — it showed the power of kindness in unexpected moments.
