The first light pushed through the blinds as Elena slipped on her shoes. The city was still quiet. Today was Saturday — but not a day for rest. She had signed up to help at Rosie’s Free Kitchen, a local nonprofit that made hot meals for people in need.
She arrived early. The kitchen was already busy. At a corner table an older man named Mr. Daniels was already cutting carrots. He gave her a nod and said, “Thanks for coming.” She smiled, though her hands were a bit shaky.
Elena’s task was simple: wash and prepare vegetables for soup. She watched volunteers move around her — some stirring big pots, others pouring the soup into the bowls, still more packaging meals. It was indeed a quiet dance of service.
Twenty minutes in, someone shook the doors. A young mother walked in with her little kid. Their eyes were cautious. Elena’s heart suddenly tightened. She served them a warm bowl of soup and watched as the child pressed his face into the bowl’s steam. The mother’s eyes met Elena’s. A silent “thank you” hung between them, heavier than words.
At midday, the line grew longer — but so did the smiles. An older woman whispered, “You didn’t have to do this.” Elena shook her head. “Yes, I did.” The woman touched her hand and said, “I really appreciate it.” The words were simple, but they echoed in Elena’s mind.
After cleanup — mopping floors, putting away plates, wiping tables — the kitchen fell silent. As Elena walked home, her shoes dusty, her shirt smelling slightly of garlic, she felt full in a way she hadn’t before. Service, she realized, was not a burden — it was a bridge. A bridge connecting different lives through shared humanity. A bridge she felt honored to help build, one bowl at a time.
4. How did Elena feel when she started her work at the kitchen
A. Nervous but excited. B. Curious and relaxed.
C. Confident and proud. D. Tired but determined.
5. What does “a quiet dance of service” imply
A. It was a slow process. B. It was a smooth cooperation.
C. It was a silent activity. D. It was a graceful performance.
6. Why does the author mention the older woman in Paragraph 5
A. To show Elena’s personal growth. B. To indicate the diversity of people helped.
C. To describe the challenges volunteers face. D. To stress the value of Rosie’s Free Kitchen.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Kitchen: A Scene of Labor B. Saturday: A Day of Duty
C. Service: A Bridge of Kindness D. Work: A Burden of Volunteer
C
If the sound of a baby crying gets you red in the face, you’re not just imagining things. A new study has found that a baby’s cries — particularly those that signal pain — really do cause a hot redness in adults’ faces, perhaps as a way of launching us into action.
Without language, crying is a baby’s best shot at getting the help they need from their caregivers. But not every cry is the same. Cries that come from serious pain are much more disordered than the cries of low-level discomfort. Scientists call these “nonlinear phenomena” or NLPs.
Caregivers can usually differentiate between cries of ordinary discomfort and those NLPs, but it’s unclear exactly how our bodies arrive at this higher-order conclusion. A team led by Dr. Laurent Moreau from Jean Monnet University wanted to know how these sounds affect adults’ nervous systems and the bodily effects they cause.
They tested the reactions of 41 participants(21 men, 20 women, aged 35 years old on average)to the sounds of babies crying. These adults listened to a selection of 23 audio (音频) tracks, recorded from 16 different babies while they were either experiencing the discomfort of a bath, or the pain of a vaccination shot (接种疫苗) at the doctor. As the participants listened, a heat camera tracked changes to their face temperature. An increase in heat from this part of the body is a response from the nervous system, which manages uncontrollable bodily functions such as heart rate and breathing.
The results showed that a cry with a higher level of NLP caused a stronger redness response from listeners’ faces, suggesting that these messy sounds are much more effective at getting the attention of adults, on a bodily level, than cries with little or no NLP.
“While our results sound interesting and new, this study remains rather basic and raises a number of questions about the methods used in the experiment.” Dr. Moreau notes.
8. Which of the following is an NLP in babies’ cries
A. Cries out of the pain of a dog bite. B. Cries out of boredom with toys.
C. Cries from restlessness when held. D. Cries from unwillingness to drink milk.
9. Why did Dr. Moreau’s team conduct the research
A. To test if pain makes cries longer. B. To learn why adults can recognize cries.
C. To see how cries affect the adults’ nerves. D. To compare men’s and women’s responses.
10. How was the research carried out
A. By observing babies’ discomfort behaviors. B. By having participants describe feelings.
C. By measuring heart rate and recording breathing. D. By playing audios and tracking face temperature.
11. What may the study team focus on next
A. Studying more baby cries. B. Improving the study methods.
C. Exploring adults’ nervous systems. D. Managing participants’ bodily functions.
D
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly seen not just as a tool, but as a potential method in environmental protection. AI can help reduce global warming, improve resource use, and develop our ability to deal with environmental problems. Yet with great power comes responsibility. A recent study discovers that if it is not carefully designed and controlled, the very technologies for helping may create the environmental harms that have never been faced.
After studying five key areas where AI can be especially effective, the study shows that in the areas responsible for nearly half of global emissions (排放), AI applications could help to lower greenhouse gas emissions. But there are trade-offs. According to the study, a lot of harms have appeared: training large models uses a lot of electricity and water; setting them widely increases energy needs; and carrying necessary hardware adds environmental footprint. The study report warns these costs might reduce benefits unless actively managed.
While AI for environmental protection is a promising direction, its success depends on governance and values. To achieve that goal, several practices are necessary: setting environmental impact assessment (评价); building energy-efficient architectures; using renewable energy; ensuring that communities likely to be affected have a voice; and widening social frameworks to contain more-than-human concerns. Furthermore, the social impact must be taken seriously. Different from the previous discovery, the report argues that AI has so far overlooked the impact on ecosystems, animals, plants and climate. It suggests using more reasonable methods to ensure a balance between harms and benefits, wise decision-making, and the effect of non-human factors in management.
In conclusion, AI has the potential to be valuable for protecting the environment — but only if we consider responsible designs and regulations that go beyond human-only concerns. If we do, AI can strengthen human efforts, not weaken them.
12. What is the possible effect of AI according to the study
A. Affecting global climate. B. Wasting valuable resources.
C. Weakening human ability. D. Causing environmental problems.
13. Which of the following has a similar meaning to “But there are trade-offs.”
A. Well begun is half done. B. Every coin has two sides.
C. Rome wasn’t built in one day. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.
14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. Energy saving should be stressed. B. All communities can have a voice.
C. Proper managements are essential. D. Human-only factors need considering.
15. What is the writer’s attitude towards AI in protecting environment
A. Cautious. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.

In the quiet town of Willowbrook, where autumn leaves turned the streets gold, lived a young girl named Lily. At fourteen, she was neither the tallest nor the most athletic girl in her class, but her spirit burned brighter than any campfire under the starry sky. Lily had a dream — a dream to climb the ancient oak tree in her grandmother’s garden, a tree so tall that it seemed to touch the heavens. This tree, known as the “Guardian (守护者) of Willowbrook”, had stood for centuries. Its branches were a silent witness to countless stories of victory and defeat.
Lily’s great interest in the tree began when she was just a little girl. She would sit beneath its large base, staring up at the astonishing heights, imagining resting among the leaves, feeling the wind tell secrets in her ear. But every time she tried to climb, fear would hold her heart fast, and she would draw back, promising herself she’d try again tomorrow.
One cold morning in early October, Lily decided that tomorrow had finally arrived. She determined not to let anything annoy her. Her best friend, Max, a boy with a talent for adventure and a heart as brave as a lion, accompanied her. Max had climbed the Guardian countless times, but he was never tired of watching others overcome their fears.
“Ready ” Max asked, as they stood at the base of the tree.
Lily nodded, her knees shaking slightly. She took a deep breath, reached for the first big branch, and pulled herself up. The tree was rough against her hands, and her muscles hurt with every move. But Lily kept going. She thought only about the next branch and then the next, ignoring the pain in her arms and her racing heart. Halfway up, she felt the treetops waving at her.
注意:
1.续写词数应为100词左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

Her heart pounded wildly as she steadied herself, looking down to see Max’s worried yet encouraging face. “You’re okay, Lily! Keep going!” he shouted. Taking a deep breath, Lily summoned all her courage and continued climbing. With each determined step, she inched closer to her dream. When she finally reached the top, Lily let out a victorious cry, feeling the wind in her hair. She knew that she had not only climbed the tree but also conquered her fears, ready for new adventures.
