Due to its status as the longest-running capital in ancient China, Xi’an has had a deep impact on the life and culture of the country. If you are planning a tour of Xi’ an, you’ll want to hit all the following highlights.
Terracotta Army
Discovered near Lintong, Xi’an, the army of Terracotta Warriors was constructed by China’s First Emperor Qinshihuang of the Qin Dynasty. It is a collection of thousands of life-size terracotta soldiers, horses and chariots in battle formation, showing the emperor’s armies in full splendor.
Xi’an City Wall
Xi’an City Wall was built in the 14th century by Zhu Yuanzhang, the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty as a military defense system. Now it is one of the oldest and best-preserved Chinese city walls. The wall is now a landmark, dividing the city into inner and outer areas. When you take a walk or cycle on the massive wall, you can enjoy a good view of the city, the moat and the watchtowers.
Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty for the study of Buddhist scriptures. One of the main functions of the pagoda was to store sutras and figurines brought to China from India by the famous monk and traveler Xuan Zang, who stayed here for 19 years translating Buddhist scriptures.
Shaanxi History Museum
The Shaanxi History Museum is home to over 370, 000 precious relics unearthed in Shaanxi over the years. I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn’t imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road) , the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early20th- century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us; some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other’s cultures.
4. How did the writer first respond to Paul’s travel plan
A. Scared. B. Puzzled. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
5. What can we learn about Paul Salopek from paragraph 2
A. He was a western journalist. B. He had a knowledge of China.
C. He came to China several times. D. He was Joseph Rock’s acquaintance.
6. What does paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul
A. They honored the ancestors. B. They set off in high spirits.
C. They satisfied the locals’ curiosity. D. They built bonds with people.
7. What is the main purpose of the writer’s writing the text
A. To share and reflect on a journey. B. To suggest a new way of travel.
C. To advocate protection of biodiversity. D. To introduce and promote Chinese culture.

Artificial intelligence has persuaded many people that we need to thoroughly change education. Now that chatbots can speedily find and bring back information and answer complex questions, why bother memorizing historical facts or quotations Shouldn’t we instead teach kids to think critically and solve problems and leave the above-mentioned work to computers This perspective suggests we can always “just google it” when information is needed.
Yet this perspective faces strong pushback. Nonagenarian American educator E. D Hirsch demolished (驳倒) the argument that we can always just look things up, stating that while Internet access and AI tutors are amazing and can strengthen knowledge if used reasonably, being able to recall facts remains indispensable.
This connects to a deeper concern about outsourcing memory. In The Shallows, Nicholas Carr writes that the suggestion we should outsource our memory to “free up” limited space for more creative thinking is based on a misconception. Thanks to its plasticity, the brain’s long- term memory center can expand, as scientists found when studying London taxi drivers. Carr warns: “When we start using the Web as a substitute for personal memory, bypassing the inner processes of consolidation (巩固) , we risk emptying our minds of their riches.”
Furthermore, cognitive limitations reinforce this risk. Daisy Christodoulou, author of Seven Myths About Education, reminds us that our working memories can only process a few new items at a time. So if we encounter too much new vocabulary or information, we become overwhelmed, damaging our ability to learn. Indeed, looking stuff up on Google often results in us not being able to recall it later.
But we don’t need to reinvent the wheel: In an era of conspiracy (阴谋) theories and misinformation, it’s even more vital that we humans have a firm grasp of basic facts.
8. What is E. D Hirsch’s opinion on recalling facts in the AI era
A. It is less important than critical thinking. B. It remains essential despite technology.
C. It should be replaced by Internet access. D. It weakens knowledge retention overall.
9. How does the author support the main argument in the text
A. Describing personal chatbot experiences. B. Comparing ancient vs. modern education.
C. Listing all AI benefits. D. Quoting experts.
10. What do Carr and Christodoulou imply about using the internet as a memory tool
A. It boosts creative thinking capacity. B. It enhances memory consolidation.
C. It harms natural brain processes. D. It ensures reliable fact recall.
11. What is the passage mainly about
A. The future role of AI tutors in modern education systems.
B. The enhancement of critical thinking skills through technology.
C. The debate on the necessity of memorization in the age of AI.
D. The complete replacement of traditional learning with internet tools.

Scientists from China have created a truly remarkable robot hand! Named the “F-TAC Hand”, it was developed by researchers from Peking University and the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence, and their exciting work was just published in the famous science journal Nature Machine Intelligence on June 9th, 2025.
What makes this robotic hand so special It can feel and adjust its grip just like a human hand can. Imagine trying to pick up a ping- pong ball with just your little finger, or holding both a baseball and a golf ball in one hand without dropping them. The F-TAC Hand can do these things! If it picks up a cup full of water, it automatically adjusts its hold to keep the cup steady and prevent spills— reacting faster than you can blink.
The secret lies in its amazing touch sensors. Covering 70% of the hand’s surface, these tiny sensors— packed as densely (密集地) as 10, 000 per square centimeter— let the hand feel textures, pressure, and any tiny movement of the object it’s holding. Crucially, these sensors are built right into the hand’s structure, so they don’t make the hand stiff or clumsy. A smart computer program uses this constant touch feedback to instantly decide the best way to grip different objects, just like our brains tell our hands what to do.
Beyond its amazing ability to mimic human touch, the F-TAC Hand also brings practical solutions to real- world problems in robotics. It’s inspired by how our own hands and nerves work. The F-TAC Hand isn’t just cool science; it has real uses. It could lead to much better prosthetic limbs, help robots perform delicate surgery, work safely in dangerous places like nuclear plants, or handle complex jobs in factories.
Made possible partly by China’s powerful “Peng Cheng Cloud Brain II”, this “hand of touch intelligence” is a big step forward for China in robotics and AI. Experts believe it brings us closer to robots that can truly understand and interact with the physical world around them. The future of robots just got a lot more skillful
12. What is TRUE about the F-TAC Hand when grasping objects
A. It can adjust its grip to prevent spills from a full cup of water.
B. It must use the entire hand to pick up a ping- pong ball.
C. It reacts more slowly than a human blink when picking up items.
D. It cannot grasp objects of different sizes at the same time.
13. What can we learn from the third paragraph
A. Each sensor covers an area of 10, 000 square centimeters.
B. The sensors are integrated into the hand’s structure to keep it stiff.
C. The AI program makes decisions delayed based on touch feedback.
D. The AI program uses real- time touch feedback to control the grip.
14. What does the underlined phrase “ mimic” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. imitate. B. replace. C. simplify. D. enhance.
15. What is the main purpose of the author in writing this passage
A. To introduce the development history of robotic hands.
B. To compare the F-TAC Hand with other robotic hands.
C. To criticize the limitations of previous robotic hands.
D. To highlight the features and applications of the F-TAC Hand.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据所给内容进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I couldn’t bear it any longer My best friend had gone for lunch with the most popular girl in class, leaving me to eat my tuna sandwich alone in the library. Worse still, during dance class, my partner, a boy, refused to hold my hand and bad mouthed me behind my back, further feeding my anger. It was, without a doubt, my worst day in school. I was hurt and mad, and looking for a target to release my anger.
When I got home from school, Mother had baked peanut butter cookies and piled them up on a plate. She even artfully decorated each one with royal icing and topped it with sugar. “Couldn’t you have made chocolate chip ” I said moodily. “I could have,” she replied from the laundry room, “but I made peanut butter ones. Eat them while they’ re still hot, sweetie.” Although I thought Mother was rather unthoughtful, I caved in and took a few bites unwillingly in the end. Later, when she pulled a grilled chicken from the oven and sang a merry tune, I somehow got annoyed again— Never mind that Mother had busied herself the whole afternoon with the cooking just to put this hot meal on the table. I wanted hamburgers.
“Nobody even likes that kind of food, Mum! Why didn’t you make hamburgers ”I complained. Mother took a deep breath, ran her fingers through her messy hair and looked into my eyes with a puzzled look. “Sweetheart, you’ve never complained about having it before. What’s up ” She said matter-of-factly (平淡地) . It was from there that all went downhill. I screamed and complained nonstop until Mother hit her limit. It was the first time that Mother had got mad at me. Nobody seemed to care about me, including my beloved mother! Ultimately, we had a shouting match in the hallway.
