Do you compare yourself to other people Perhaps your best friend received something you really wanted for Christmas, or you’re not allowed to go to a concert but your brother or sister is. Even though comparisons are normal and can sometimes be helpful, focusing on your own progress is important for your happiness.
Why does focusing on me matter “We prefer to compare ourselves to others who are doing better or not as well as ourselves,” says psychologist (N 理学家) Nicola Abbott. “But comparing your achievements to your past self (where you started) and our future self (where you’d like to get to) can be more positive.” This can make you feel proud of what you’ve achieved and excited about what you might do. Child psychologist Laverne Antrobus agrees and says that focusing on your own goals is more worthwhile than always trying to come out on top.
Do comparisons make you unhappy Comparing yourself to those around you is natural and we often do it without realizing. It can help us to find our achievements and to form friendships with new people who have similar interests. However, it’s important to be realistic and remember that nobody is perfect, especially online and on social media. Taking notes of how the comparison is making you feel matters, too.
If you begin to feel quite low, Abbott suggests choosing a different role model or focusing on your own strengths and what you’re good at. Antrobus agrees. She says that asking yourself questions like “______”, “What do I feel proud of ” and “What improvements can I notice ” can help to improve your self-esteem (how positive you feel about yourself).
“Jealousy (忌妒) is an ordinary feeling,” says Antrobus, “but focusing on improving your own performance can help you feel just as successful. Learning to celebrate your friend’s achievements can help not only to improve your friend’s feeling but can also help you feel good. “It will encourage you to build each other up.”
39. What does the underlined phrase “focusing on” means
A. Paying attention to. B. Taking part in. C. Playing a role in. D. Making use of.

①Glaciers (冰川) are important to life on Earth. As large sources (资源) of freshwater, they support the planet’s life systems and influence our day-to-day lives, even for communities who live far away from them. However, glaciers are disappearing. The disappearance of glaciers makes the influences of climate change more noticeable, especially in ways that might be hard to see in other ecosystems (生态系统). In the following passage we will explore what is causing glaciers to disappear.
②As we all know, the reason for this is global warming. When certain gas such as carbon dioxide (CO2) is largely emitted (排放) into the atmosphere, it causes the greenhouse effect (效应) which makes Earth warmer.
③Rocks take in more heat, causing the temperature to rise. As a result, the remaining snow on glaciers melts faster.
④The effects of global warming will be far-reaching. While the melting of glaciers may flood some areas of Earth, while in other places, it is making water disappear.
⑤An increasing number of heat waves and droughts (干旱) worldwide will also change the face of the world in the future.
⑥Global warming is a real problem, which is largely caused by human activities. Solving the problem is not easy, and there is no single magic way. However, we can begin it by lowering the amount of CO2 in our daily lives.
⑦Peter Miller, along with his wife, took part in a scientific test to see how much CO2 they could cut down in a month. The average U.S. household produces about 80 kilos of CO2 a day, which is more than twice the European average and almost five times the global average. Their final goal was to make less CO2 than most American families.
43. Glaciers are important to life on Earth because.
a. glaciers are large sources of freshwater. b. glaciers support the planet’s life systems.
c. glaciers are far away from people’s living places. d. glaciers influence people’s everyday life.
A. a, b, c B. b, c, d C. a, b, d D. a, c, d
44. Which of the following is NOT an effect of global warming in the passage
A. Glaciers melt quickly. B. Some areas may be flooded.
C. There will be more earthquakes. D. Water may disappear in some places.
45. What can we know from the passage
A. The more heat the rocks take in, the slower the snow melts.
B. One way to solve global warming is by lowering the amount of CO2.
C. Heat waves and droughts have nothing to do with climate change.
D. The average American families produce as much CO2 a day as that in Europe.
46. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage
A. B. C. D.
D
Minor Snow (小雪) is the 20th solar term in the traditional Chinese solar calendar, marking when light snow falls and temperatures drop. This year, Minor Snow starts on November 22 and ends on December 6. During this time, snow mainly falls in northern China, where temperatures drop below zero. The first snow along the Yellow River often appears now. While snow at night may freeze, it typically melts during the day as the earth is not yet frozen enough. As the weather turns colder, people begin to change their clothing and lifestyle. In northern China, winds from the northeast grow stronger, making it sensible (合理的) to start wearing hats and scarves to keep warm. According to an old Chinese saying, “The head is the place where all passages (通道) of the body gather”, which highlights the importance of protecting the head from the cold.
Minor Snow also brings changes to people’s diet. Indoor heating during this time creates dry air, leading to discomfort such as dry mouth or nose. Traditional Chinese medicine recommends drinking hot soups to counteract the “inner heat.” Popular soups include cabbage and tofu soup, spinach (菠菜) and tofu soup, and mutton and radish (萝卜) soup. In Southern China, people enjoy glutinous rice (糯米) cakes, which were traditional offerings to the bull god and have become a seasonal delicacy (美食).
With the temperature dropping sharply, it is also the perfect time to make preserved pork. This tradition, developed when storage conditions were poor, allows families to enjoy flavorful meat during winter. Many believe preserved pork tastes even better than fresh meat. Similarly, pickled (腌制的) vegetables are prepared during Minor Snow, especially in places like Nanjing, where they have been a winter staple for centuries due to limited access (获取有限) to fresh produce.
Minor Snow reflects the wisdom of adapting to seasonal changes, blending practical traditions with health-conscious practices to prepare for the colder months ahead.
47. Which of the following is TRUE
A. Minor Snow marks the start of Winter season of this year.
B. Every year Minor Snow starts on November 22nd.
C. During Minor Snow, snow falls across China.
D. People may not see snow during the day time on Minor Snow.
48. What is the writer’s purpose of talking about the old Chinese saying
A. To stress the importance of wearing warm clothing.
B. To explain why hats and scarves are necessary.
C. To stress the cultural wisdom of protecting the head in cold weather.
D. To show how traditional sayings guide clothing choices.
49. What makes people drink soups during Minor Snow
A. The cold winds. B. The dryness. C. The customs. D. The doctors’ advice.
50. Why do people mainly start preparing pickled vegetables during Minor Snow
A. Because fresh vegetables are unavailable in winter.
B. Because pickled vegetables are a winter tradition in Nanjing.
C. Because it is the best time for preserving food.
D. Because they are tastier than fresh vegetables.
