The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting (期待) all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was excited about going to high school for my first week.
When I got to school in the morning on the first day, I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four classes without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade. However, the fifth class changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr. V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing. But come on. 40 ESSAYS AP-level books Now I was afraid.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds (人群) and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.

English is full of funny expressions that don’t always make sense. Idioms are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word, you may not understand the idiom because you don’t understand the culture behind it. Here are some English idioms based on animals.
When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop “monkeying around”.To “monkey around” means to do things that are not useful or serious, or to simply waste time.
Many American families have and love pet dogs. But for some unknown reason, Americans use “dog” in a phrase that means to feel unwell. If you are “as sick as a dog”, you’re really, really sick.
Sometimes you may also hear cats mentioned in conversations, “I told you to keep that secret, but you have just ‘let the cat out of the bag’!” You probably guessed it — that idiom means to reveal a secret or tell facts that were previously unknown.
Dogs and cats don’t always get along, but they appear side by side in a commonly used idiom. When it rains heavily, people might say it’s “raining cats and dogs”.
Heavy rain often ruins people’s plans for outdoor activities. But on a lovely day, you can have a picnic. If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be really annoying. That experience perfectly explains why people often tell someone who keeps bothering them to “stop bugging me”.
Idioms are very common in both spoken and written English. If you want to have a better understanding of English, you have to learn idioms.

A.Dogs and cats always get along nicely.
B.Bugs can be used to show your annoyance.
C.Americans believe cats can give away secrets.
D.Americans use the idiom “as sick as a dog” to describe a healthy man.
31.How does the text mainly develop
A.By sharing experiences.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By giving examples.
D.By listing figures.

Previous studies have suggested children who spend their days looking out of the window instead of paying attention may be among the cleverest pupils. The latest study, however, suggests in the long run constantly daydreaming will leave children struggling to keep up with their peers. Dr Agnieszka Graham, a lecturer in applied developmental psychology at Queen’s University Belfast, said, “In school, often children can get in trouble for mind wandering. It is sometimes viewed as a sign of disrespect or misbehavior if they are not paying attention.”
The study, conducted by Queen’s University Belfast, is the first to deal with the impact of so-called “mind wandering” on learning in young children. The researchers played a story about a fictional pharaoh (法老) in ancient Egypt to 97 children aged 6-11 and asked them a question every two minutes to check if they were paying attention. The study found that mind wandering had a significant impact on learning, as children who daydreamed the most remembered less about the story. The researchers discovered the children’s minds wandered a quarter of the time, and they could not help it.
According to the study, daydreaming during a classroom-style listening activity is not only common but also harmful to memory in children. And because the impact of daydreaming is so clear, teachers should consider how they teach young children to reduce mind wandering.
However, the research has found children, like adults, are unable to fully concentrate all the time; it’s likely that their minds will wander several times in a typical school day. The findings show that further exploring the causes and consequences of mind wandering in these early years at school could provide a solid foundation for developing interventions (干预), which will help children find out when their attention drifts away from the present task and refocus their attention.
32. Why did Queen’s University Belfast conduct the study
A. To improve children’s memory.
B. To learn a story about ancient Egypt.
C. To check children’s attention in class.
D. To research the influence of mind wandering.
33. What might the researchers advise teachers to do
A. Help with further research.
B. Help children concentrate.
C. Reduce their own mind wandering.
D. Work harder while teaching the young.
34. What does the underlined word drifts in the last paragraph mean
A. Breaks. B. Remains. C. Moves. D. Sticks.
35. What’s the author’s attitude to children’s mind wandering
A. Concerned. B. Supportive. C. Uninterested. D. Unclear.

Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge hunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.
The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!
In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever seen.
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With just one flower left, I said it should be given to the person who needed it most.

第四部分 写作
第一节
Dear Sir,
I am Li Hua, a student who is studying in senior high school. Knowing English volunteer guides are needed in Yuxi Science Museum,I’m writing to apply for a chance to become one of them.
As a senior high student, speaking English fluently is my greatest advantage. Having started to learn English since I was three, I have a good command of spoken English, which allows me to communicate with visitors without difficulty. what’s more, as a science lover and a native in Yuxi, I have a great passion for science and my hometown. If accepted, I can introduce the science knowledge and the culture of my hometown to visitors easily and passionately.
I think I am qualified to be a guide. Please take my application into consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
With just one flower left, I said it should be given to the person who needed it most. Just then, my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby. “I think she’s the very person for the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most,” said my nephew. With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her. You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss.
It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can’t wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers!

W: I see. Was your classmate the factory manager
M: No, but he was in charge of the sales department. And he could make the decision to sell the shoes to me at a big discount. But now, the new manager is really difficult to deal with.
