Do you know what Oscar is When did it start Maybe you can find the background of the awards in the following passage.
The awards started in 1929. Their full title is “The Academy(学会) of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards”. The Academy is a group of people who have worked in the film industry for many years. They decide who will receive the awards. The awards are often referred to as the “Oscar”. This is a nickname given to the awards by a lady called Margaret Herrick. She was once the director of the Academy and she once said that the little gold statue reminded her of her uncle Oscar!
The Oscar is always an exciting event. Each year, at least one unusual thing happens. When the Italian actor and director Roberto Benigni won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, he danced on stage! When Gwyneth Paltrow, the star of Shakespeare in Love won the Oscar for Best Actress, she could not make her acceptance speech because she was crying so much with happiness!
In 1987, Roberto Benigni won the award for Best Director for a film about the last emperor of China. Since then, Chinese film and actors have started to make an impact at the award. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a huge success and it won the award for Best Foreign Language film in 2001. It also won several technical awards for its amazing “flying” people. We expect to see more awards for Chinese film in the near future.
It’s time for the Oscar again. Once more, the stars will dress up in their finest and go to Kodar Theater. There, they will find out who had won the awards for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director. Millions of people watch the awards every year to find out who the winners are. Some people watch it to see the stars crying and laughing as they receive their awards.

David, a policeman, came to a small wooden house about two miles up the mountain to get Cal Richards, an armed and dangerous killer. Through a broken window, he saw an old man watching him closely. When he stepped into the house, he found the old man was holding a gun in his hands.
“Government man, aren’t you ” said the old man.
“Yes,” David replied with a friendly smile. “You must be Pappy Richards.”
“Sure. I’ m Cal’s pa. And you’re not going to get him.” The gun pointed at David.
David looked around the house and didn’t see any sign of Cal. “I’ve been sent to do it,” he said. “But I can see he isn’t here today. I guess I’ll have to come again.” Just then he caught sight of a violin hanging on the wall. “Who plays the violin ” he asked.
For a moment there was silence. In fact, Cal’s pa played the violin best in the area, but he did not answer, with his gun still pointing at David.
David crossed the room to the instrument and felt sweat on his forehead, but he took the violin from the wall as calmly as if he were a welcome visitor. He began to play the violin, one tune(曲子) after another. He was playing better than he had ever played in his life.
The old man stood there, attracted. The hatred in his eyes was giving away to a look of wonder. The gun was pointed towards the floor. He began to beat time, tapping one foot on the dirt floor. When the final notes of the tune died away, the old man placed the gun in a corner.
“Well, stranger,” the old man said, “you play the violin excellently. Maybe you’ll stay for dinner and play some more for me.”
After they had eaten, they sat in the spring sunshine outside the house. They talked about violin tunes. Not a word was said about Cal Richards.
About two hours later, David stood up and said, “Sorry! I must be getting back to the town.”
The old man sat, deep in thought. At last, he said, “I like the way you talk, and I like the way you play the violin. I guess you’re a good guy.” He paused as if it were hard to go on. Then, he said in a thick voice, “I---well, I’ll have a talk with Cal. I think he might give himself up tomorrow. You should be at the police station at noon.”
The next day, as the town clock struck twelve, an old man came up the street towards the police station. With him was a young fellow whose appearance told of many days in hiding.

A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression(抑郁) as young adults.
The researchers used a national long-term survey of teenager health to find out the relationship between media(媒体) use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995. As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. The young people spent five and a half hours a day using media and more than two hours of that was spent watching TV. Seven years later, in 2002, more than 7% of the young people had signs of depression. The average(平均) age at that time was twenty-one. Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author of the new study. He says every extra hour of television meant an 8% increase in the chances of developing depression. And the study did find that young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use.
Primack says the study did not find out if watching TV causes depression directly. But one possibility, he says, is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports and social activities. It might also prevent a person from sleeping well, he says, and that could have an influence.
In December 2005, they published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. They found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active.

My favourite art form
My favourite art form is films because they are like long, colourful dreams that everyone can share. My room is full of film tickets, I stick them on the wall like shiny stamps.
Last winter holiday our school held a “Mini-Oscar” activity. My group chose Zootopia. I played Judy, the brave rabbit. At first I was shy and nervous, so I watched the movie five more times, copying Judy’s smile, hop, even the way she walks. When the big day came, I wore grey ears made from paper plates and spoke my words loudly. Everyone clapped and we won the “Best Teamwork” award.
Films teach me more than English. They show that a small action can change the big world, so maybe a normal girl like me can also do something special. When life feels grey, I pick a bright film, eat sweet strawberries, and let the music and pictures wash the sadness away. The world on the screen is wide and welcoming, and I know I will always get power from it.

Roy was a little boy with glasses. His father worked in a cinema and his mother worked in a shop. He lived not far from his school. He always walked there and walked home. On his way to school, he had to pass a playground. It was full of water when it rained. Many boys liked playing in the water, so they often got their clothes wet. One day, when Roy got home, his clothes were all wet. His mother got angry and said, “Don’t play in the water on your way home from school!”
The next day, Roy came home with wet and dirty clothes. His mother got angrier. “I’ll tell your father if you come back wet again.” said his mother.
The third day the little boy was dry when he came home. “You are a good boy today,” his mother said happily. “You didn’t play in the water.” “No,” the boy said unhappily. “There were too many older boys in the water when I got there this afternoon. There wasn’t any room for me at all.”
