Weifang kite-making began 2,000 years ago. At first, the army often used kites to measure (测量) distance and for communication. During the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), kites became popular among people. In 2006, Weifang kite-making was put on the national level intangible cultural heritage lists (国家级非物质文化遗产名录). Since 1984, the International Kite Festival has been held in Weifang every year.
Yang Hongwei, an inheritor (继承人) of this art, was born in a kite-making family. “Every time I see the beautiful kites, my bad and negative feelings go away,” Yang said.
Yang has a special connection with kites. She learned the kite-making art from her grandfather when she was 16. After 10 years of practice, she opened her own shop in 1992. On Yang’s kites, you can see not only common shapes like butterflies and birds, but also some paintings that show Chinese traditions and history.
In her free time, Yang travels to different countries such as Germany, Australia, the US, and New Zealand. We all have plans in our lives. We plan our studies, our vacations, and our future work. But sometimes, there is something unexpected.
Last year, Tom was looking forward to his summer vacation. He had planned to go to a famous beach with his family. They had booked the hotel and bought new swimwear. Months ago, I came to the US, a country I didn’t know much about. I’m from France, and I’m here as an exchange student. The customs here are really different from those of my hometown.
American people are friendly. For example, once when I was hanging out, a local girl greeted me, “Hi, welcome to America. You’re pretty! I love your coat!” For a moment, I didn’t know how to reply to the girl’s warm words. In France, people don’t speak to strangers for no reason.

Chinese astronauts onboard the Shenzhou XIV spacecraft returned with the world’s first rice seeds (种子) produced in space.
They were in space for 182 days, during which they watched and directed the completion of China’s Tiangong Space Station and several experiments in life science. While there have been other rice experiments in space, the one at Tiangong is the first of its kind that is to produce the complete life cycle (周期) of the plant, which begins with a seed and ends with a fully grown and developed plant producing new seeds. The experiment began on July 29, and after 120 days in space, they successfully produced new grains (谷物).
Since the 1980s, China has been taking seeds of rice and other crops to space to help them change and produce more once they are planted on the earth. But growing rice in space is a challenge because of the bad conditions of space, such as micro-gravity (微重力).
The new seeds, along with other bio-samples (生物样本), have been passed to the Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. They would also be sent to labs in Shanghai for further research.
