Your Garden Escape
Even in the big city you can find oases (绿洲) of calm and beauty. From a royal palace to a classical garden, we recommend great green spaces to escape the hustle and bustle(喧嚣繁忙) of London.
Horniman Gardens
Homiman Gardens cover 16 acres with breathtaking views of London. Visitors can enjoy the Sound Garden, Meadow Field, and even a Prehistoric Garden, which features a display of “living fossils”. The gardens are very popular with families, and dogs can be let off their leads in the Meadow Field.
Chiswick Garden
As a classical garden landscape in London, it was here that the English Landscape Movement was born with William Kent’s designs. Enjoy fresh bread, seasonal food, and natural wines in the award-winning cafe, while admiring the beauty of the natural scenery, spotted with impressive art and statues.
Buckingham Palace Garden
The 39-acre garden boasts more than 350 types of wildflowers, over 200 trees and a three-acre lake. The garden also provides a habitat for native birds rarely seen in London. A tour of the garden can be completed by having a cream tea in the cafe overlooking the Palace’s famous grassland and lake.
Kew Garden
The Royal Botanic Garden at Kew is one of the world’s most famous gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Have a walk through the vast garden, spot local wildlife at the lake, or get your hands dirty by trying a gardening lesson. Becca was 6 when she was told she had cancer on Sept. 8, 2014. She clearly remembers the bad days of her 26 months of non-stop treatment. Luckily, Becca celebrated her final treatment on Nov. 13, 2016, and she has been cancer-free ever since. But she was thinking about what her life was like while experiencing the treatment.
“I was never able to do much, and that’s what the kids lying in their hospital beds right now experience, asking their mom and dad, “When are we leaving When can I play with my friends ” So I decided I have to help them.”
In February, 2017, Becca came up with the idea for Knots and Arrows, a company that makes bracelets(手镯) out of swimsuit materials. Part of the money made from each bracelet goes to the organizations that help people with cancer.
Becca created the company with her father, Gerhard Salmins. Gerhard Salmins once had cancer and already recovered from it. “I would be in the hospital sitting there crying and then my dad would come in and he would play games with me,” she said. “It made me forget about what I was going through.” Becca said the name of the organization shows the motto she stuck to through her personal cancer journey.
Her organization has already given thousands of dollars to research organizations and families in need. Becca said she hopes her bracelets will make people remember that great things can result from small changes. “No matter what age you are, what you look like, how you act, you can make a difference.” she said.

British fire-fighters are fighting against the worst wildfire they have seen. They called it a “megafire”, Eight different fires combined (联合) an hour’s drive north of London.
Professor Blair, an environmental research expert at the University of London, said that the wildfires mainly resulted from a combination of drought, high temperatures, and strong winds. Climate change had also been identified as a contributing factor, with Britain growing hotter and hotter, drier and drier in recent years.
The number of wildfires was well above the long-term average last year, continuing a trend in place since 2022. Several destructive fires have occurred this year. Seventy-five large fires, covering at least six hectares (公顷), were recorded last year, according to analysis of data going back to 2008 by the London School of Economics (LSE). In 2018, 17 large fires were recorded. This increased to 74 in 2020, then 97 in2021 and 138 a year later. Separate numbers got by Lord Botham, the former England cricketer, show a relevant increase in carbon dioxide emissions(二氧化碳排放) from wildfires from 294, 000 tons in 2019 to1, 363, 000 tons in 2023.
“While once there would be a big fire year every few years, now it is becoming yearly,” Dr Botham, another professor in environmental geography, told the reporter, “We need to be prepared for more flammable landscapes. This preparation has already started. Professional wildfire teams have been appointed in fire and rescue services up and down the country.”
He added that firefighters in Britain were learning from those in Spain, South Africa and the US, which “currently face a fire risk that we might see in the coming decades”.
Although the recent ban (禁令) on single- use barbecues in parts of Dorset and Hampshire would help, the limitations should extend to sky lanterns and fireworks (烟花).
23. What caused the fires according to Professor Blair
A. Hot weather and heavy rainfall. B. High temperatures and wet weather.
C. Strong winds and increasing pressure. D. Extreme weather and climate change.
24. How does the author tell the terrible results caused by wildfires
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By interviewing experts.
25. What can we infer from Dr Botham’s statements
A. Wildfires happened yearly in the past.
B. Continual wildfires led to full preparations.
C. Firefighters in Britain are better trained than those in Spain.
D. Professional wildfire teams will join fire and rescue services.
26. Which has the similar meaning to the underlined word “extend”
A. Enlarge. B. Experiment. C. Relate. D. Explore.

Adults who continuously played organized sports through their youth have fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression than those who never played or those who dropped out, a new study finds. “And those who dropped out of sports had poorer mental health than those who never played at all. But many more people drop out of youth sports than play continuously until they are 18.” said Chris Knoester, professor of sociology at The Ohio State University.
“If you play and stick with sports, it’s a positive for your mental health, but if you play and drop out it seems to be negative— and most kids drop out,” Knoester said. The study showed that most people dropped out of sports because they weren’t having fun or felt they weren’t good enough. “That suggests ways youth sports can be improved to help kids,” said study lead author Laura Upenieks.
“Our findings about why kids drop out of organized sports suggest that the current environment is less than ideal for everyone, and that the barriers to participation need to be given greater attention,” Upenieks said.
“It is easy to see why sports can be good for those who are able to continue with it to adulthood,” Upenieks said. “The longer that youth are exposed to a positive and encouraging sporting environment, the more likely they are to develop habits that are conducive to long- term mental well- being, such as a commitment to regular exercise and collaborating with others as part of a team.”
The fact that so many kids quit shows that organized sports often don’t provide a positive environment. But there are steps adults can take to improve that environment.
For one, sports should be safe for kids. The researchers said the fact that 8% said they were badly treated by coaches is particularly alarming. “And the finding that nearly half of kids quit because they weren’t having fun and about a third dropped out because they felt they weren’t good enough should also be a wake-up call,” Knoester said.
“We need to improve youth sports so that it supports positive experiences for everyone and makes it more enjoyable,” he said.
27. What can we say about dropping out of sports
A. It has no impact on physical health. B. It’s of benefit to mental health.
C. It keeps players playing into adulthood. D. It is worse for mental health than never playing.
28. What is one of the main reasons for kids dropping out of sports
A. They don’t get joy from exercise. B. They prefer individual activities.
C. They are not physically fit enough. D. They are not academically related.
29. What can adults do to prevent the youth quitting sports
A. They can reduce the number of coaches. B. They can supply a secure environment for kids.
C. They can change the rules of sports. D. They can provide more training partners.
30. What might Upenieks agree with
A. The reason kids quit sports needn’t be taken into consideration.
B. The benefits and drawbacks of playing youth sports should be balanced.
C. The youth sports have an impact on long- term mental health.
D. Youth sports programs have both challenges and solutions.

For learning Chinese, the correct pronunciation of the words 51 (be) very important. Native speakers perfect these sounds as they grow up, but for new learners, this may take time.
For Mandarin learners, pronunciation is one of the 52 (challenge) most people tend to meet with. Error- making is a 53 (nature) part of learning any language, not just Mandarin, and we all have our own fair share of weak points.
We can easily spot some Mandarin pronunciation mistakes 54 are a lot more common than others. Pronunciation in Mandarin is important, because a simple shift in tone can completely change the meaning of a word. Unlike other East Asian languages, Mandarin depends heavily 55 tone to convey the proper meaning, so correct Chinese pronunciation is essential.
Sometimes, though the difference in sound is clear enough, learners make the mistake of pronouncing it in 56 same way. The best approach to 57 (solve) this is to use a Mandarin pronunciation guide which tells you exactly how different sounds are made and 58 they come from so you can differentiate (区别) between them properly.
English has stressed syllables within words, while Mandarin does not. Mandarin can make changes to the tone of the vowel, which in turn, changes the meaning. Mandarin does have stress within a sentence. 59 (improve) your Mandarin pronunciation, listen to native Mandarin speakers as much as possible and talk with them too. Besides having general conversations with people 60 (regular), you should make sure you have a teacher who can help you identify where you’re going wrong. Remember, practice makes perfect!
