At 96, Giuseppe Paterno has faced many tests in life, such as childhood poverty and war. Now he has sailed through an exam making him Italy’s oldest university graduate.
Already in his 90s when he signed up for a degree in History and Philosophy at the University of Palermo, Paterno grew up loving books and never gave up his dream of going to college. “I said, ‘That’s it, now or never.’ So, in 2017, I decided to sign up,” he told Reuters in his apartment in the Sicilian city of Palermo, which he rarely leaves nowadays due to his weakness.
Growing up in a poor family in Sicily in the years before the Great Depression, Paterno received only basic schooling as a child. He joined the navy and served during World War II before going on to work in the railways as he married and brought up two children. In a society focused on rebuilding after the war, work and family were the priorities, but Paterno wanted to learn and graduated from high school at the age of 31, always harboring a desire to go further. However, he had to wait for decades before returning to school again.
As a student, he tapped out his essays on the manual (手工的) typewriter his mother gave him when he retired (退休) from the railways in 1984. He avoided Google in favor of printed books and was not tempted (诱惑) by the late-night student parties of his 20-year-old classmates. He always knew why he was there.
“You are an example for younger students,” his sociology professor, Francesca Rizzuto, told him after he passed his final oral examination in June.
As for what he planned to do next, he said he was not about to stop though he had graduated. “My project for the future is to devote myself to writing; I want to revisit all the texts I didn’t have a chance to explore further. This is my goal,” he said.

More than 16 million years ago in what is now New Zealand, a giant bird died and sank to the bottom of a lake. Preserved (保存) in layers of sand and gray-blue clay, the bones of this giant bird have been unearthed, revealing what is now the largest parrot known to science.
Of the 350 parrot species alive today, the heaviest is the kakapo, a flightless bird also native to New Zealand. But the extinct parrot crushes the parrot’s record: Described from two fossilized (使……成化石) leg bones, the bird would have weighed 15 pounds and stood roughly three feet tall.
Researchers unearthed the big bird fossils in 2008 at St Bathans, a former mining town that sits on top of an extinct (消亡的) lake. The site preserved rich fossil deposits (沉积物), including plants, crocodiles, bats, and dozens of bird species (物种). “Most of the samples (样本) in the St Bathans fauna (动物群)—more than 6,000 identifiable bird bones—are quite small,” says study leader Trevor Worthy, a paleontologist (古生物学家) at Flinders University in Australia.
That’s why the large leg bones of this bird stood out. For the next 10 years, the bones sat on a shelf with other supposed eagle bones from the St Bathans site, until a graduate student realized they were not actually from ancient eagles.
“It was completely unexpected and quite unusual,” Worthy says. “Once I had convinced (使信服) myself it was a parrot, then I obviously had to convince the world.” Worthy and his team compared the leg bones to samples and online images from various museums.
“Based on what they were able to show here, it’s convincing,” says Alison Boyer, an ecologist at the University of Tennessee who was not involved with the study.
The research team then estimated the size of the bird based on the leg bones. But even if their estimate is not perfect, this bird would have been extraordinarily large for a parrot.

When we are healthy, breathing happens naturally and easily. Without much effort on our part, the human respiratory (呼吸的) system works hard. Experts say we take about 20,000 breaths every day.
When you breathe deeply, the air coming in through your nose fully fills your lungs, and the lower belly (腹部) rises. Deep breathing may slow the heartbeat, lower blood pressure and lower stress. Deep breaths help your body fully exchange incoming oxygen (氧气) with outgoing carbon dioxide (二氧化碳).
However, many people do the opposite of deep breathing. They take short breaths and have shallow breathing. Experts call this “chest breathing”. Shallow breathing limits the expansion (扩张) of the diaphragm (隔膜) and its movement. The lowest part of the lungs does not get a full share of fresh air. This can make you feel short of breath and worried, or anxious.
Shallow breathing, over time, leaves old, unfresh air in the lungs. This leaves less room for the diaphragm to bring in fresh oxygen. And that means lower oxygen levels and less oxygen for exercise and activity.
Several health websites explain an easy deep breathing exercise. Find a place to lie down. Place one hand just below your ribs (肋骨). Take a slow, deep breath through your nose. Feel your hand go up. Your stomach should rise and expand. Now breathe out slowly through your mouth. Make sure to breathe out all the way. Feel your hand and stomach go down.
If done repeatedly, breathing exercises can help remove unfresh air from the lungs. This will increase oxygen levels and get the diaphragm to return to its job of helping you breathe. Deep breathing is a good way to reduce stress and relax.
Shortness of breath happens when you are worried, frightened, or are in poor physical shape. But it can also be a sign of health problems.
