When I was in middle school, the best way that I could describe myself was as a parents’ worst nightmare: I didn’t care about my education, didn’t do my homework and always slept in class. My score was so bad that I still don’t know how I did.
I had my reasons for why I didn’t do my best— video games. When I was a teenager playing Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series, I definitely wasn’t looking to learn things. But with 11 main AC games all set during different times and places in history— like ancient Egypt and Greece—I was bound to learn something, even if just by accident. And I definitely did.
One day, my history teacher passed out blank maps of the Caribbean. It was a quiz I had forgotten about. We had to label countries and major cities. Luckily, I’d been playing a lot of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, which was set in the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy in the early 18th century. So I was able to draw on my life as a pirate to fill in the map, and I got an A.
Ubisoft did a lot of research to recreate ancient Egypt in the game, and they released an educational discovery tour for each game that lets you look around the environment with no violence, enemies, or time constraints (限制). You can learn about the Olympic Games, and how Sparta trained its soldiers in ancient Greece with real historical figures acting as your tour guides, or jump over to ancient Egypt to check out mummies (木乃伊) and climb on the pyramids.
Obviously, Assassin’s Creed can’t teach you everything you need to know about the ancient world, but the game does make that world come alive for people who are reluctant to learn, like I was. So, take advantage of these things and your learning should be as enjoyable as possible.
24. Which of the following can best describe the author in middle school
A. A tough nut. B. A black sheep.

A. The history test was quite easy.
B. Pirates were good at map filling.
C. The author owed his A to the game.
D. He regrets wasting so much time on games.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Many students are addicted to video games.
B. Learning history is necessary for school students.
C. Experiential learning is a powerful way of learning.
D. Ubisoft accomplishes the educational purpose in its games.
27. What does the author want to convey through the text
A. Playing computer games is harmful to us.
B. Games don’t necessarily prevent learning.
C. The drawbacks of video games can be minimized.
D. Bad grades in school won’t keep you from success.

The Three Gorges Dam, located on the Yangtze River in China, is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world. It is an impressive hydro-power project, with over 20 times the energy-generating capacity of the Hoover Dam. Now, China wants to build another revolutionary energy source: a solar array (阵列) in space.
" It is as significant as moving the Three Gorges Dam to a geostationary orbit(地球静止轨道)36, 000 km above the Earth." Long Lehao, a rocket scientist and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), said in a lecture reported by the South China Morning Post. "This is an incredible project to look forward to." The space-based solar power (SBSP) stations work by using a system of mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto panels, which then generate electricity. The electricity is then transformed to microwave radiation and beamed to a fixed antenna(天线)on Earth.
SBSP panels are more reliable than the solar panels on your roof because they aren't affected by seasonal weather or nights. They can generate much more electricity than ground panels, as sunlight is much more intense in space than on Earth's surface. A recent NASA study even predicted that one model of space-based solar power could generate power for 99% of the year. As Long said in his lecture: "The energy collected in one year will be equal to the total amount of oil that can be extracted from the Earth."
However, there are a few drawbacks holding space companies back --- namely, the sheer size of the project. The solar array is predicted to be a kilometer wide once fully established. To get their array into space, Long and his team are working on developing the Long March-9 (or CZ-9) --- a reusable heavy-lift rocket with a lifting capacity of at least 150 tons. That's like lifting a full-grown blue whale into space.
The solar array isn't the only plan China has for space research --- it also plans to reach the Moon and build an International Lunar Research Station in partnership with Russia by 2035.
28. How do the SBSP stations send electricity to Earth
A. By sending microwaves to a ground receiver. B. By storing it in batteries and sending them back.
C. By transporting solar panels back to Earth. D. By sending sound waves through the air.
29. What are the advantages of SBSP over ground-based solar energy
A. Lower cost and easier maintenance. B. Higher reliability and productivity.
C. Better stability and greener energy. D. Greater efficiency and accuracy.
30. How does the author develop the fourth paragraph
A. By making comparisons. B. By analyzing cause and effect.
C. By listing some examples. D. By explaining problem and solution.
31. What's the main idea of the text
A. The advantages and disadvantages of solar energy.
B. China's plan to build a solar power station in space.
C. The Three Gorges Dam as a model for space projects.
D. The potential of SBSP stations to replace earth-based plants.

When the Derby Arboretum, one of the first public parks in England, opened in 1840, it was only open to the public on Sundays and Wednesdays. For the rest of the week, its fountains and pathways were reserved for paying customers, whose entry fees effectively supported the park.
The system was scrapped in 1882, as the growing concern for public health among Victorian reformers sped up the creation of open public parks in towns and cities across England. Anyone can now walk through the Derby Arboretum. But another form of gatekeeping is taking place in parks today. Councils that have seen their budgets severely reduced due to financial challenges are finding ways to turn parks into cash-generating properties, often by renting stretches of the land to fenced-off commercial events.
These deals can be mutually (互相) beneficial, particularly when the park is sizable and locals are consulted. They can also seem like a destructive form of temporary privatization. Earlier this month, Haringey Council in north London rented part of Finsbury Park to Tough Mudder, a popular obstacle (障碍) course and run for adults. Initiatives that encourage outdoor exercise are welcome, but the size and nature of the event drew criticism after hundreds of racers turned the field into a sea of mud and damaged a community orchard (果园).
Races and festivals generate income that councils can reinvest in park maintenance, but they can also wall off areas of parkland, making them less accessible for locals. The reliance on commercial income isn’t limited to London. Residents in Swansea and Manchester have complained about frequent fenced-off events. Councils find themselves in a difficult position. Parks are a non-essential service, and so they are at risk of cost-cutting. Income from events has become an increasingly important source of income. For councils that cannot make their parks pay, the risk is a thinning of local facilities and declining public space.
Parks are one of the last areas of truly public space. They offer us fresh air and comfort, space to breathe and exercise. Councils should not have to depend on commercial income to safeguard their future.
32. What does the underlined word “scrapped” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Simplified. B. Designed. C. Abandoned. D. Detailed.
33. Why was Tough Mudder criticized
A. It refused to consult the council.
B. It designed inadequate obstacle courses.
C. It involved quite a few local racers.
D. It had an unfavourable environmental impact.
34. What is the concern about the reliance on commercial income for parks
A. Insufficient event facilities. B. Reduced parkland accessibility.
C. Decreased park maintenance. D. Lack of interest from residents.
35. What is the author’s opinion on parks
A. They should be truly for everyone.
B. They should be funded by councils.
C. They should be protected by park-goers.
D. They should enhance community engagement.

As educators, we tend to think back and reflect on the teachers who made a difference in our lives. Some of them pushed us to do our best. 36 Among all these influential teachers, one stands out in my memory.
My favorite teacher was my 5th grade teacher. Mrs. Judith. She was an engaging teacher who not only offered choices in her lessons but also provided us with constant support and genuine care. One day, Mrs. Judith asked us to decorate the name tags for our desks. She provided the requirements for the assignment but left the specifics up to us. Unlike most of my classmates, I made a pattern where each letter of my name was colored differently from the next. 37 Instead, Mrs. Judith encouraged my creativity.
Besides, Mrs. Judith encouraged me to participate in a gifted program. Although my scores weren't high enough to qualify me for the program, she still insisted that I should participate with another student from my class. Whenever I hesitated, she would look me in the eye and say, "You can do this." 38 I started contributing unique ideas in group tasks, and even led a small research project with my partner.
39 Although I had no plans at that point in my life to be an educator, Mrs. Judith's approach to teaching has had an impact on my belief about quality instruction. I believe strongly that engaging students through creative, real-world activities and choice in assignments is essential for maximizing learning. 40 This enables me to build strong bonds with my students. Thanks to Mrs. Judith's influence, I'm now loved by my students.
A. So it's crucial for teachers to assign creative projects.
B. I wasn't discouraged from using this unusual approach.
C. Others even had a far-reaching impact on our career outlook.
D. She selflessly helped us prepare for the program's activities.
E. I also learn what it means to be a caring and inspiring educator.
F. Her influence extended beyond mere academic encouragement.
G. Her encouragement transformed my self-doubt into confidence.

That year when my twin sister Nancy and I were about 6 years old, we eagerly looked forward to the arrival of New Year's Day.
When the day finally came, our mother prepared many dishes, including a whole chicken, uncut and tempting. We were especially drawn to the juicy chicken legs which made our mouths water. We couldn't resist the urge to sink our teeth into one. However, we were somehow afraid that Mom wouldn't let us eat the chicken before dinner. Just as Mom was making her final dish, she realized she had forgotten an ingredient and headed out to the town for a quick grocery run. Our 12-year-old sister Rene was absorbed in a book in her bedroom, and the chicken was sitting invitingly on the kitchen table. Our perfect chance had come. We went to "steal" the chicken legs!
Nancy giggled (咯咯地笑. "Shhh!" I whispered. "Our sister will hear us, and stop our plan." Quiet as mice, we tiptoed into the kitchen. I swiftly grabbed a small knife Nancy had found and eagerly began cutting the chicken legs.
Nancy smiled and reminded me to hurry up. "I'm trying." I replied. "but this knife isn't working " Desperate, we both grabbed a leg and pulled as hard as we could. Both legs came off at the same time. We both hit the floor, a leg in hand --- success! With delight, we began feasting on our delicious chicken legs.
Then we heard a car door shut. "Mom!" we both whispered. "Run!" I said quietly. Nancy hit the stairs. I was right on her heels. We quickly escaped to our bedroom and jumped into bed, carefully hiding our treasures under the blankets so that no one would see them. Now, all we had to do was close our eyes and pretend to be sound asleep. "Brilliant idea!" we thought smugly (沾沾自喜地).
Mom stepped into the house, and the first thing she noticed was the chicken on the table --- two legs gone, with messy scratches on the meat. Then we heard Mom's footsteps approaching.
