Zhu Yuanzhang started China’s Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). Now, Chinese history textbooks have a new portrait(画像) of him—people no longer use the old “shoehorn-faced(鞋拔子脸)” one. The new portrait has a fuller, more smooth and respectful face. Many netizens(网友) say, “This makes my childhood memory new again.”
This change isn’t new. The People’s Education Press(人们教育出版社) says textbooks have used the new portrait since 2019, and the 2025 Grade 7 textbook still uses it.
A Palace Museum talk notes Zhu had many historical portraits. Qing scholar(学者) Hu Jing recorded 12 kinds, mainly two types: “standard” —wide forehead(额头), calm look and “unusual”—sticking-out jaw(下巴), long face, many moles(痣).
Historians(历史学家) disagree on his real look. Some think he hid it for safety; others say he used the “unusual” portrait to seem secret. Zhu encouraged such portraits, which grew popular from Ming’s Hongwu period (1368–1398) to Qing Dynasty (1644–1911).

Hello, everyone. I’m Kitty from the Animal Protection Club. Recently, we often see stray cats on the streets or in our communities. As winter comes, their life becomes much harder. They have no warm places to stay and have difficulty finding enough food. Many of them get sick easily because of the cold and hunger, and some even can’t get through the winter.
As students, we can do something to help them. First, we can build warm cat houses and provide some clean water and cat food for them. Second, if we find sick stray cats, we can ask our parents to take them to a vet. We can also call the animal shelter for help. What’s more, we can tell more people to care for stray cats and advise people who keep cats to get them fixed to reduce the number of stray cats.
Helping stray cats is a small act, but it shows our kindness. I hope everyone can join us. Let’s work together to make the winter warmer for these little animals. Maybe one day, there will be no more stray cats suffering in the cold.
