Shawna Edwards has written songs that help children, youth, and adults connect with feelings of hope and comfort. One of her most popular songs is called “The Miracle (奇迹)” whose video has been watched over 7 million times on YouTube. On a recent episode of the All In podcast, Shawna shared a touching miracle that came about through the song.
Shawna’s cousin has an autistic (自闭症) son who she says had never sung a word before in Primary. Every year, he would stand up with the other Primary kids during their annual meeting program, but keep his mouth shut the whole time.
Then came the day of his very last Primary program, and as usual, he did not sing for most of the meeting. “The Miracle” was the last song of the program, and the plan was for an older Primary girl to sing the last line — “the miracle that rescues you and me” — as a solo (独唱) at the microphone.
But the unexpected happened. As the older girl was coming up to the microphone, the boy’s eyes lit up — he broke his silence, moved toward the microphone, too. People were left gaping, unable to close their mouths, as he stood right in front of her and sang the last line himself.
When the boy’s parents tried to apologize to the girl and her parents, they — and everyone else in the ward — told them they felt they’d seen a miracle watching the boy sing.
Stories like these are why Shawna loves writing spiritual music. It isn’t about online views or personal acclaim, but about touching hearts one at a time through inspired songs.
“I have around 65 songs on YouTube, and every single one has come with multiple miracles — I could share a million,” Shawna says. “There are ‘song miracles’ where writers are given the perfect words for someone in need, and I believe those songs find their way to them exactly when they’re needed.”
24. Why is “The Miracle” a special song for Shawna
A. It has the most online views. B. It was her first published song.
C. It was written for her cousin’s son. D. It led to a warm-hearted experience.
25. What can be inferred about the autistic boy from the passage
A. He hated singing in public. B. He was deeply moved by the song.
C. He wanted to replace the older girl. D. He practiced “The Miracle” secretly.
26. How did people feel about the boy’s performance
A. Angry. B. Bored. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
27. What message does the passage convey
A. Popular songs often have many views.
B. Music can help connect people emotionally.
C. Autistic children can sing well with practice.
D. Family support helps children overcome difficulties.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are critical to modern cities. They keep public health safe by handling billions of liters of wastewater every day. But as the world races to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a key source is slipping under the radar: the wastewater sector itself.
In a new study published in Environmental Science and Ecotechnology (July 2025), researchers from Harbin Institute of Technology challenge the current ways of counting WWTPs’ greenhouse gases. They warn that common methods greatly underestimate the sector’s effect on climate — especially when it comes to fossil carbon dioxide (CO2).
It’s well known that WWTPs release methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) during biological treatment and waste handling. These are two strong greenhouse gases. But fewer people understand the role of fossil CO2, released from man-made chemicals like detergents (洗涤剂). This carbon comes from fossil sources, not natural broken down. So it adds to atmospheric CO2, but most emission lists don’t include it.
Using radiocarbon tests, the study’s authors found that fossil carbon makes up 4 — 28% of all carbon in the wastewater that enters WWTPs. Most of this fossil carbon turns into CO2 and is released during treatment. But this hidden emission is ignored in most official climate reports.
“Wastewater is not just a cleanliness issue — it’s a climate issue,” said Dr. Haiyan Li, who led the study. “By forgetting fossil CO2 and using outdated estimation methods, we’re reporting fewer greenhouse gases than we should.”
To help cities switch to low-carbon wastewater treatment, the authors suggest using real-time, multi-gas monitoring systems. They also say fossil CO2 should be included in national climate lists. This would let local governments and plant operators make emission-cutting plans based on real site conditions, not assumptions.
“We need better data to drive better policies,” the research team said. “Smarter monitoring tools can connect science and action.”
This research shows a bigger change in thinking: wastewater infrastructure — long seen just as a tool for hygiene — must also be seen as a key part of fighting climate change.
28. What does the author mean by saying “a key source is slipping under the radar” in Paragraph 1
A. A major emission source is ignored. B. Fossil fuels are overused in WWTPs.
C. Methane release is unmonitored. D. Emission counting tools are outdated.
29. Why is fossil CO2 left out of most emission lists
A. It is not a strong greenhouse gas. B. It comes from natural breakdown.
C. Its source is not well recognized. D. It is released in small amounts.
30. What do the researchers suggest to solve the problem
A. Stopping using man-made chemicals. B. Adding fossil CO2 to climate records.
C. Reducing methane and nitrous oxide. D. Closing outdated wastewater plants.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. A New Climate Threat. B. Hidden Fossil CO2 in Wastewater.
C. Low-Carbon Treatment for Wastewater. D. Underestimated WWTPs’ CO2 Emissions.

In 1993, the Nunavut Agreement gave the Inuit a large area of land in Canada. It was the country’s biggest Indigenous land deal. After 30 years, a heritage center honoring Inuit culture is finally taking shape. While the agreement had always called for a heritage center, it’s only now that this important space to preserve artifacts and traditions is moving forward.
A Danish architecture group called Dorte Mandrup won an international competition to design the center. They got ideas from Inuit culture and the natural world. The design recalls the manner in which snow piles are shaped by the wind. These beautiful patterns, called kalutoqaniq in Inuit, have been a natural wayfinding system for the Indigenous people inhabiting the area. This design respects the Inuit and fits well with the surrounding area.
The Inuit Heritage Centre will be situated in northern Iqaluit — the capital of Nunavut. An official said it is designed to promote greater awareness of Inuit culture, support cultural healing, and help Inuit and non-Inuit get along better. It will let the Inuit reconnect with their past through objects, stories, and activities.
Dorte Mandrup, who started the architecture company, said, “This project needs us to care about the landscape and its cultural importance. The community has worked for a long time to protect their heritage and share knowledge that might be lost. We’re excited to listen, learn, and turn their ideas into a real building.”
The center is set to open in 2027. It will have exhibition spaces, a cafe, workshops, a lab to protect artifacts, a daycare, a hostel, and offices. There will also be outdoor areas for traditional activities like carving and building kayaks. Besides, it will bring back Inuit artifacts that have been kept in southern Canada for a long time. This will help younger Inuit learn about their roots. It might also encourage more heritage centers to be built across Nunavut.
32. What can we infer about the building of the Inuit Heritage Centre
A. It was designed by Inuit. B. It started right after 1993.
C. It will be completed soon. D. It was delayed for decades.
33. Why does the center’s design use the pattern “kalutoqaniq”
A. To attract architects. B. To match the environment.
C. To save building materials. D. To follow Danish trends.
34. What is the focus of Paragraph 5
A. The center’s functions and effects. B. Young Inuit’s interest in heritage.
C. Kayak building as a traditional skill. D. Future heritage centers in Denmark.
35. Which is the best title for the passage
A. Inuit Artifacts Lost in Canada B. Danish Architecture in Nunavut
C. A Heritage Centre for Inuit Culture D. The Nunavut Agreement’s History
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Organic farming has gained much attention as people grow more concerned about food safety and environmental protection. Unlike conventional farming, which relies heavily on fertilizers, and pesticides, organic farming follows strict guidelines to keep soil healthy, protect biodiversity, and avoid harmful chemicals. ____36____ They also help keep the environment in good condition in the long run.
One important rule of organic farming is taking care of soil. Organic farmers use natural methods like growing different crops in the same area over time to stop pests from building up and makes soil more fertile. ____37____ The materials, made from rotted plant and animal waste, add important nutrients to soil and help good tiny organisms grow.
____38____ For example, organic farms are homes for wild animals such as birds, insects and small mammals. Not using man-made pesticides protects pollinators like bees. These insects are very important for plants to produce seeds. Besides, organic methods reduce water pollution. No harmful chemicals flow into rivers, lakes or underground water.
Despite its benefits, organic farming has problems too. A major issue is lower yield than conventional farming. Without fertilizers to boost growth, crops produce less per acre. This lower yield makes organic food more expensive. Moreover, organic certification costs a lot and takes time, making it hard for small-scale farmers to adopt. ____39____
However, organic farming’s future looks promising. Advances in techniques, like natural pest control and better soil management, boost yields. ____40____ Governments also support it by research funding, and sustainable agriculture policies. As more recognize its benefits, organic farming will play a bigger role in global food production.
A. These methods make sure food is safe and healthy.
B. Organic farming works with nature to produce food.
C. These challenges limit its expansion, even as demand rises.
D. Organic farming also benefits biodiversity and the environment.
E. Many consumers pay more for organic products for health benefits.
F. Also consumer awareness and demand for organic products grow fast.
G. Another natural thing to improve soil in organic farming is farm wastes.

The Wooden Carving Legacy
Li Ming grew up in an ancient town with a history of over 800 years. Every weekend, he would visit his grandfather, a renowned wooden carver who dedicated his life to preserving the town’s traditional carving techniques. One day, grandfather showed Li Ming a set of old carving tools, his eyes shining with pride. “These tools have been passed down for three generations,” he said. “They once helped restore the town’s ancient theater stage.”
Last month, the town announced a plan to demolish the old theater to build a new shopping mall. Li Ming was shocked. He rushed to the theater, only to find its wooden carvings of dragons and phoenixes were chipped and covered in dust. Grandfather sighed when he heard the news, gently touching a cracked carving on a beam. “This theater was built in the Qing Dynasty,” he murmured. “Its carvings tell stories of our ancestors.”
Li Ming couldn’t sleep that night. He thought of grandfather’s calloused hands and the fading carvings. The next morning, he had an idea. He took photos of the theater’s carvings and posted them online, hoping to attract attention. To his surprise, the post quickly went viral. Local historians and young people who loved traditional culture contacted him, offering to help.
One weekend, Li Ming and a group of volunteers went to the theater to clean the carvings. Grandfather joined them, bringing his old tools. As he carefully brushed off the dust from a phoenix carving, a small piece of wood fell off. He frowned, then said to Li Ming, “This wood is too dry. We need to treat it properly, or all these carvings will be lost forever.”
That evening, Li Ming held a meeting with the volunteers. They discussed how to persuade the town government to change the plan. A history teacher suggested writing a proposal with detailed information about the theater’s cultural value. “We should also show them the support we’ve received online,” she added. Li Ming nodded, feeling more confident than ever.

【原文】Welcome back. Next, I’ll tell you about a special family. They’ve been honored as the “Most Beautiful Family” for their contribution to traditional Chinese culture—Yangliuqing New Year Paintings. Our main character is Zhang Hong. Influenced by her father-in-law, a professional in woodblock printing, she began to study this art form. Zhang spent days and nights perfecting her skills. Through the hard work and creativity of Zhang and her family, they have found new ways to protect and develop this traditional art form. For example, they have created unique stamp designs using wooden blocks, which are not only beautiful but also carry good wishes. That is Zhang’s daughter’s idea. During her college years, Zhang’s daughter added fashion elements to traditional pictures. She drew them as cartoon images and printed them on bags and T-shirts. Those designs are more attractive to younger generations. The whole family’s passion for this art is truly inspiring. That’s all for today. Thanks for watching!

【答案】Dear Peter,
Our school’s international department will hold a “Cross-cultural Digital Story Creation Contest” next month. Participants need to submit a 3-minute short video that shows common cultural themes between China and foreign countries.
I’m writing to invite you to team up with me. You’re skilled at video editing, and your interest in Chinese culture will help us present unique perspectives. I’m thinking we can focus on “friendship” — recording small interactions between Chinese and foreign students at school. It’ll be a fun way to share culture and practice teamwork.
We can discuss the details this weekend if you’re available.
Looking forward to your reply!

【答案】
The next day, Li Ming and his grandfather went to the mayor’s office. The mayor welcomed them warmly and listened carefully as they explained the cultural value of the old theater. Grandfather took out his old carving tools and showed the mayor the details of the theater’s carvings, emphasizing how they represented the town’s history. Li Ming also presented the online support they had received, with photos of volunteers cleaning the carvings. The mayor nodded frequently, looking impressed by their efforts. “This theater is indeed a precious piece of our heritage,” he said seriously.
A few weeks later, the town government made an exciting announcement. They decided to cancel the plan to build a shopping mall and instead invest money in restoring the old theater. Li Ming and his grandfather were overjoyed when they heard the news. Volunteers gathered at the theater, ready to help with the restoration work. Grandfather picked up his tools again, this time to repair the chipped and cracked carvings. As the sun shone on the theater’s wooden beams, Li Ming knew that their hard work had saved an important part of the town’s history for future generations.
